According to an article by Saul McLeod in Simple Psychology, “conformity is a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behavior in order to fit in with a group”(McLeod “What”). It is not an uncommon experience in life to encounter yourself or others yielding to group pressure. Sometimes the situation is as simple as the celebration of some random basketball team making it through to the next playoff game, not actually caring who shot that winning basket, but joining in the excitement because it would be considered the “norm” within that social group. The government, media, and social groups are a big part of the society. These things encourage people to conform. One of the books that have people conforming is Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson. In Among the Hidden Jen, one of the characters is very outgoing and brave. Luke another character is very shy, once he meets Jen he conforms to be brave like her. In addition, society encourages conformity through government, media, and social groups.
The article “The Case for Fitting In” compares to my idea of conformity because I think that it means how you change your opinion due to social pressure. My idea of conformity relates to the article because it was talking about how when people were in a group and someone said the wrong answer they usually went with it. “Each subject saw 18 sets of lines, and the group answer was wrong for 12 of them” this proves that most of the time people went with the group rather than going with their personal opinion. I think that the article really compares with my definition of conformity because I think that it causes you to change your opinion and sometimes causes you to choose wrong answers. As defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, conformity is “behavior that is the same as the behavior of most other people in a society, group, etc.” Margaret Drabble’s idea of human conformity, which she believes is “greater than our respect for objective facts,” is a direct result of the concept of human nature. It leads to humans striving to be like their fellow human associates and to not be considered eccentric when compared to the group as a whole. Although some believe that conformity is nonexistent and not persistent throughout humanity, it is actually true that conformity is existent and is a direct cause of human nature that causes humans to make decisions not always based on their own best judgement and reasoning, but rather on the decisions made by those whom they surround themselves with.
In pyschology conformity can be descibed as an indiviual’s tendency to follow the unspoken rules or behaviours of the social group to which he/she belongs to or wants to be apart of. Many psychologists including , Jenness (1932), Sherif (1935) both experimented in psychology, investigating conformity and group pressure.
