Social media has many unique uses, and is an invaluable tool. While it can be harmful, and even dangerous, when you understand how to use it and what it should be used for it can greatly enhance your life. One of the many ways social media is beneficial is that it can help students who have just graduated from college find a job. There are hundreds of networking sites out there that a student can use to get there resume in front of the right people, and even doing something as simple as creating a blog about your job search and skill set can mean the difference between getting hired a month after graduation and a year after graduation. Sites like LinkedIn, Jobster, and Simplyhired are designed to help people find jobs in all fields. LinkedIn in particular, allows you to upload a resume, write a personal statement, add a profile picture, and connect with potential employers, friends who are pursuing a similar career, and family members who already have a job in the field you are looking in. Students can create a profile on LinkedIn before they graduate, and include information about internships they completed while in College, volunteer work they may have done, athletic involvement, leadership roles they held while in school, and a copy of their current transcript. This will enable them to get in front of employers early, and hopefully cause employers to think about their name when it comes time to start hiring. Once students graduate, they can add information about where
According to the Pew Research Center, “41% of social media-users have experienced at least one negative outcome as a result of using a social networking site.” In this article, Norton uses logos, pathos, and ethos to explain his standpoint to his audience. Logos are used when Norton brings up the legal issues of social media such as privacy concerns. Bringing the reader into Norton’s own personal experiences of abuse and name-calling uses pathos. Finally, ethos are used indirectly in the article due to the fact that Norton is a writer and has experience with social networking and the negative impact it can have. Norton uses logos, pathos, and ethos by establishing evidence and logical points in his article to persuade his audience against using social networking.
Social media has become a part of our life, and no one can imagine living without it. Social media has grown a lot over the several years. Young individuals have always thought that social media is a marvelous piece of technology, but they never think about the negative effects of ‘like’ culture, which contributes to conformity and other negative consequences. The article, The Insidious Evils of ‘Like’ Culture, written by Neil Strauss, tells us about to what people can go to get more “likes.”
As technology editing tools have become easier to use, many people have felt obligated to go on a photoshop epidemic every time they share an image to the world of social media. In a pervasive world where images of unrealistic standards fuel over the media on how one should look, social media has one of the most significant impacts in body dissatisfaction in today’s society. Throughout the last decade, social media has become one of the most common and favored ways for people to communicate, connect, and share. Thus, there have been many debates and discussions on whether social media has a positive or a negative impact in the way an individual perceive themselves. With the rapid growth and rise of smartphone usage among adolescents and young adults, social media outlets have become an essential part of one’s daily life. Today, when adolescents and young adults turn on their smartphones, often times, the first thing they will refer to is a social media site. It has become a place where they are exposed to news, images, and expectations. Thus, often times, these images, ideals, and expectations are ingrained in their brain and bombarded with what is considered to be beautiful in today’s society. Moreover, these unrealistic standards will often lead to a form of comparison, influencing them to take extreme measures. Although social media serves as a platform where people can connect, communicate, and share, it has a negative impact on one’s body image because it can lead to a
121.1 billion; that is the number of minutes us Americans spent on social media during the month of July 2012. However, their purpose is uncertain. The world uses social networks for many reasons, good or bad. People find the good out of networks like Twitter and Facebook because they can connect and socialize with other people, to promote business, get information and news, and even find jobs. There is a bad side to these social networks however. There are a ton of people on the internet who give away personal information which leads to hacking, theft, bullying, and other negative consequences. Also, people that are users of these social networks are changing what we define “social”. Instead of face-to-face communication, today’s generation speaks through technology such as, texting. I have to agree with the negative side though because the internet actually has much more dangers rather than help. In conclusion, social media is about similar to a drug because, it changes our personalities, takes us off-task, and exposes us to the dangerous people.
Social Media, we all have some form of it. The Definition of social media is “forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)” according to Merriam Webster. From teenagers with apps like Instagram and Snapchat to adults with Linkedin and Facebook. Social media is not exactly great and it has a very negative effect on society. Not only is it infecting our minds through our phones but it can even evoke dreadful situations and feelings. From the horrible feeling of “FOMO,” procrastination, and the terror of getting cyberbullied anonymously. Is social media doing more harm than good? The answer is yes. There are many facts and studies that show the effects of social media on people of all ages. Around 43 percent of teenages have been bullied online, this may or may not be anonymous. With hundreds of new social media apps coming out every month, such as Miitomo , Musical.ly, Peach and Vidku and even more powerful updates of the apps we already use and know, is the “wonderful” world of social media going to get bigger and bigger until it takes over our lives and for good? It’s slippery slope from here.
Social media has become the part of our everyday life. Social media has become the necessary and unavoidable part of our life. We use internet, websites, social networks, television and other means of social media everyday very frequently. The social media is designed in a way that it attracts and draws our attention immediately towards itself. We are controlled social media. Our daily life activities are linked with social media’s effects. We use social media for number of purposes. We use it for research purpose, to gather information, to communicate with others, to run our official works; our opinions are influenced by media. In short social media has become a vital part of our lives and some people even find it to live or stay happy is very difficult
A picture is worth their pride. A picture is worth their self-esteem. A picture is worth their dignity. Social media networking has become a large part of today’s society. Media applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat are rising in popularity, not only amongst teens, but adults as well. According to Pew Research Center, in 2015, 65% of American adults now use social networking sites up from 7% back in 2005 (Perrin). Bringing people from all over the world together, social media sites have made it easier for people to communicate and interact on all different levels.
In modern times, there has been increase in the usage of social media in communication. The platform such as Twitter and Facebook has been employed in marketing, where marketers target the users of the social media. Through the social media, individuals have been in a position to reach a high number of friends and family members.
Even though social media allows social interactions between family and friends most believe that it should keep them from feeling depressed. Without thinking about this American dream, they paint for families and friends, think realistically most families are waiting for you to mess up or fail in life and being associated with you on social media is just a way for them to keep up with you. Social media has been becoming more useful; it's been changing a lot of families in a very negative way (Medrano 1). This proves that since social media had been made into a big deal today its ruining almost everything and everyone that is associated with it. Even though it can be used to keep in touch it’s terrible because it causes stress on people by making them believe everything they post must be perfect or their family member will talk badly about them. It also keeps competition between friends and that just ruin their relationship maybe even be the cause of those friends never talking again. Watching other family member and friend’s social media account can make someone feel less of person or make them feel like they didn’t accomplish enough because the other is posting so much successful stuff. Following those family and friends on social media brings nothing but headaches and depression.
However, does that mean that social media has a negative effect, restricting children from forming strong bonds and relationships? Yes and no. Going deeper into the discussion, I was reminded of a video that I had come across from a TV show called ‘Adam Ruins Everything,’ a series based around debunking common misconceptions. In this video in particular, the host interviews Anne Curzan, a Professor of English at the University of Michigan, discussing how language has changed in culture because of the addition of texting. She explains that it is not that the grammar of texters is improper, it is only that it is different and everchanging. Nowadays, it is common knowledge that if someone ends their text in a period, then it means that they are angry. Curzan also explains that while parents and adults might believe that their children do not put grammar into consideration, text messages actually are thought over quite intentionally because text has almost become its own language; a “text language.” (BATORACLE) With that, Turkle also describes the use of images and memes with funny texts in group messages, saying that people should never let it replace empathetic face-to-face conversation. However, one must look at texting, instant messaging, and memes and pictures as just a different language from spoken English, bringing up emotions and phrases that can not be defined in typical spoken conversation. In fact, the use of slang, now used especially on social media, has always
Does social media provide benefits or is it damaging? This is a dilemma faced by both parents and teens today with numerous social media platforms evolving and growing. While issues with social media can arise, such as excessive usage, an effort to balance work and entertainment must be carefully achieved in order to live a fulfilling life. Undeniably, the benefits of social media, like easy sharing and starting conversations with others, outweigh the detriments. Although social media can become addicting and hurtful, in general, it benefits society by providing unlimited amounts of information, creating an equal platform for all, and allowing people to connect easily.
There is no doubt that social media and the internet is an insanely popular way of communicating among our friends and family, but with so much time spent on social media, there are bound to be effects that can be felt by all of us. Big social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat have such a widespread user base that the amount of time spent on these platforms by all users is most likely an unbelievable number. A lot of people may think that social media is a waste of time and has addictive qualities, and has mostly negative impacts on its users; Social media can also be used in a variety of ways that are more beneficial and not time wasting.
Individuals all have a choice whether or not to do social media, but the real situation is how they do and what they do on it that gives negative effects in today's world. People are all entitled to their own opinion and deciding whether or not social media affects today's society is all based on the background of it that represents social media in such a way. The first social media site was created in 1997 called Six Degrees. It allowed users to create a profile and become friends with other users on it as well. As social media keeps getting bigger and bigger over the years, the effect it has on their mental and emotional health will keep getting bigger and bigger. So how far will one go into this so-called social media popularity? Social Media creates a negative effect on today’s world by creating problems such as bullying, privacy matters, and poor representation of the media.
There is no doubt that social media has greatly impacted our society. Though, it is questionable whether that impact has been helpful or harmful. Social media can be useful, though it has been proven to cause self-centeredness, loneliness, and sadness. Also, the rise of social media lead to the invention of cyberbullying, and using social media can be risky. This topic is important because if society continues to overlook these factors, the results could be disastrous.
The internet as we know it today was brought to the world in 1983, since then it has gone in many different directions, but the social media websites and apps have taken over the internet over the last fifteen years. It all started with a website called Myspace, which hit the internet in 2003. Since then, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many other social media platforms have become a huge hit. These platforms have truly changed the world in so many amazing ways, they’ve brought couples together, created job opportunities, and even allowed people to become “social media famous”. There are plenty of social media stars for just about any and every category you can think of, beauty, adventure, collectors, etc. My question is, what negative impacts have social media influencers such as Kim Kardashian and Jay Alvarrez had on people’s lives today? While social media celebrities bring a lot of light to subjects, they also have a lot of negative impacts that come with them, such as body image issues, self-esteem issues, unrealistic realities, and they have had a negative impact of people’s basic communication skills.
