As much as there are negative affects to technology and the internet, I believe that there are even more benefits to it. Technology is a tool that we use daily, and it will continue to grow for as long as we let it. There are a significant amount of ways that technology can help. It can be used in school and for learning purposes, which is a great thing to take advantage of if you get the opportunity. In the passage “Is Coding the New Literacy,” it talked about how much of an essential skill coding is in today’s world. The reason to this is because technology is advancing and jobs are requiring more of a person in order for them to attain a job. Technology is very important in our world and has been laying a big role in the advancement of civilization, health, education, and so much more. On the other hand there are those who believe that the internet and technology is just damaging our brains and is in no good use to us. There is a common misconception about the younger generation using the internet/technology ad that they are being brained washed by media and only depend on the devices they use and online interactions/their online life. According to the passage “What’s the Matter with Kids Today,” people are not fully aware of the potential younger people have with the internet and their technologies. The older generations tend to lean more to the left and assume that it isn’t good and it’s just sucking people in. To them, the inter net might have not existed when they were younger but as technology advances, hey get more and more lost in understanding the benefits of what can come out of it all. Things only get better as they go along and I know that technology is on a right path and will continue to surprise people, whether it be soon or in the long run. In school we are used to reading from a book and answering questions, we used critical thinking skills and comprehension skills. Yes this is extremely useful, but its only so far that we can get through life with these skills and jobs are getting harder, and just as fast as they are getting harder, less and less of them are going to be available. The passage, “Is Coding the New Literacy,” talks about how important coding is nowadays and the benefits of
There has been a ton of turmoil about the internet. A controversial issue on whether the internet is more helpful or hurtful to the human brain. On one hand, Nicholas Carr argues that technology may be weakening human abilities for deeper reading, an old fashion type of learning. Carr believes that relying on computers will cause humans intelligent to decline. On the other end, there’s Clive Thompson. Thompson presents computers as a digital tool that assists people in their everyday life. Providing phenomenal external memory, social connections, and endless availability of resources. Both, Carr and Thompson, believe that the internet can act as a tool that shapes the way humans think. Which brings us to the dilemma, is the internet a technological apocalypse or a promising utopia?
As the years tack on and we embark on new technological advances, the effects of such technological advances brings on new concerns about what this technology is doing to and for us. Is it connecting or disconnecting us, pushing the boundaries or crossing the line, helping or hurting us? Now what’s come into question is our intellectual habits; Is new technology making us “dumber”? With research making unfair comparisons between the new generations and older generations, those under the age of thirty cannot be proven to be “the dumbest generation”, but an improving generation.
Growing up as a child I've always used the internet as a source to chat with my friends and family online, to do my homework, and play games. I’ve been on the internet since I was 10 years old. It’s a reliable source I always go to answer my questions. Our society now relies on the internet to answer all of our questions on a daily basis. In Nicholas Carr article his beliefs are that the internet has changed our society in many ways and it has created a negative effect to our way of thinking. However, the internet has provided a positive interaction to college students knowledge, such as YouTube videos offering tips on how to fix things, learn different languages, and how to solve classroom related problems.
It is a habit for the older generation to compare today’s society to their own, and often time, it is not in the favor of the youth. A prominent though is that the current generation is being corrupted by technology and because of it are at a disadvantage intellectual. One certain critic, Mark Bauerlein, in his book, The Dumbest Generation, makes a bold claim that anyone under thirty are part of a generation dumber than any before. However, studies show a different trend. Technology is not lowering intelligence but changing the way people learn. Because of the influence of the digital world, the current generation has shift to a new way of learning that in no way make them dumber.
The film the Digital Nation was incredibly interesting in that it opened up a new viewpoint on the discussion revolving the importance and use of technology in our everyday lives. I had tended to see the development of technologies in a mostly positive light, because it created such open streams of communication so seamlessly. The film does show the benefits of communication the digital world has opened up to us, but it also presents the potential darker side where individuals are being consumed with their digital lives. To see the internet and technologies as "dumming down the world" was an interesting spin that did make sense with the evidence the film presented. In this viewpoint, the unrestrained technologies available today are becoming a distraction just as much as a benefit to young and old alike. Students have trouble absorbing information online with all of the distractions available, including online chatting and all the other stimuli which confront them while online. The fact that these students are
As I said in my previous essay, not many people realize it, but the human race desperately depends on technology for existence. Although depending on things such as computers, cellular devices, and search engines comes with very helpful and developmental research, it has also come with many negative effects. Technology has literally affected all aspects of life for every living person. To the point where it has made people lazy, taken their jobs, and has even made people addicted to social networking. Some examples of problems are constant use of social media, texting and driving incidents, cyberbullying, and even cheating on tests or exams. I believe that we’ve become evermore negatively dependent on technology because humans now feel the need to socialize and connect with one another more frequently than they did before the turn of the 21st century.
Imagine… a generation of kids brainwashed, scarred, and emotionally unstable; lacking key knowledge to survive in the adult world and the parents are the cause of this apocalypse. Every year parents are allowing their kids to access an electronic device at a younger age. Some children even have full access to the internet which that can arise even more complications. Electronics at an early age is an absolute terrible thing, it is bad for three reasons: it causes kids to become more electronic dependent into the future, social media can impact future jobs and college admission, social media and electronics can lead to disorders such as eating disorders, suicidal thoughts, and even sleep deprivation. These things are the reasons why technology is a bad thing.
Steven Spielberg once said, “Technology can be our best friend, and technology can also be the biggest party pooper of our lives. It interrupts our own story, interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, to imagine something wonderful, because we are too busy bridging the walk from the cafeteria back to the office on the cell phone.” This is an example on how telecommunications affect social interaction between people. As technology evolves, so does its negative outcomes towards young children. One can see that technology in cell phones are more harmful than beneficial since it creates distractions, cyberbullying, and connectivity to harmful predators.
Carr states, “Yet, for all that’s been written about the net, there’s been little consideration of how, exactly, it’s reprogramming us.” (Carr, N. 2013). Along with altering our intellectual capabilities, the internet has also managed to replace things that were once thought to be one of a kind. Carr goes on to say that, “It’s becoming our map and our clock, our printing press and our typewriter, our calculator and our telephone, and our radio and TV.” (Carr, N. 2013). This can lead people to question what else technology will replace in the future. Carr’s thought process in this segment is very relatable because I notice that I can’t leave the house without my phone. I would feel like I am an outsider to the world if I had to go a day without it. Technology in this day of age is becoming stronger and we the people are becoming more and more dependent on it.
When it comes to the topic of technology, most people will readily agree that it has been growing non-stop at a significant pace. About 16 years ago, technologies, such as computers were not a necessity in mainstream life. Since then, technology has progressed and people have become extremely reliable on. In the essay “What’s the Matter with Kids Today?” by Amy Goldwasser, she talks about the positive aspects of the Internet. Although she mainly focuses on the positive she also contradicts herself and mentions some negative aspects. “Twenty-plus years ago, high school students didn’t have the Internet to store their trivia”(Goldwasser 238). Those unfamiliar with this school of thought may be interest to know that it basically boils down to
Technology is the science or knowledge put into use to solve problems as well as invent useful tools. It is a necessity used in everyday lives because of its advancement, especially in today’s world, from curing illnesses to being able to talk to someone across the country with one single electronic device. Although technology may look as if it’s beneficial to our society, it will ruin the future of the human race. We live in a place with hate all around that can be the cause to an atrocious downfall. Countries use this power to overthrow each other with the use of weapons such as nuclear bombs that can easily wipe out a city with one single button. Similarly, the novel Level 7, by Mordecai Roshwald, gives a great realistic outlook of what would happen if the government were to use a nuclear bomb to wipe out their enemies. Other novels such as The Time Machine, by H.G. Wells indicate the negative viewpoint, not only with death but what the future of technology will hold for the human race. Technology will eventually become so powerful that humans will no longer be able to control it causing their immense downfall.
The use of technology has become very common in today’s society. This is because people can contact others regardless of the distance, time, and language. Such barriers confronted in reality are easily avoided using technology such as Google Translate and cell phone services. With advancing technology, it is becoming more challenging to avoid using. To make people buy technology, releases of new products in today’s society cause people to devote more time to learning the differenced in the product. A well-known example of this is Apple products. With new phones, laptops, and software people constantly have to adjust to the differences. Multiple careers worldwide use technology on a daily basis to perform a multitude of tasks. All over the world people email each other, post on social media, and search countless topics on the Internet. Speedy contact with others can assist countless tasks, from personal to professional usage. Even with the advantages technology can provide someone there still is multiple inconveniences. Regrettably, many people do not realize that numerous complications arise from overusing this technology. Technology weakens social skills and a person’s health by lowering one’s sociability, increasing loneliness, and weakening their overall well-being.
Technological advances in US industries are destroying jobs and distancing people from direct social interaction. However, technological advances have undoubtedly raised both the standard of living and the average life expectancy. Technological advancement in agriculture have resulted in increased food production, reducing the possibility of famine, even as the population continues to grow. Technology has allowed people to do both fantastic and terrible things, yet technology cannot be blamed as the cause of those good or bad results; technology is merely an instrument for the user, resulting in either good or bad outcomes.
“Technology should improve you life, not become you life” - Billy Cox. These words from the legendary bassist have a powerful meaning which can relate to today's society. The fascination of new technology has stolen the eyes of the people worldwide. As more breakthroughs with technology occur, people will become more dependent on a resource that is not reliable. In other words, more people will start to depend on modern technology with all of their needs, which can lead to reducing of their creativity and own intelligence. The uprising of new technology may have its advantages, but on the other hand, it can cause cyberbullying, health issues, and a lack of social skills.
It is no doubt that we as a society have become dependent on technology. Whether people agree or disagree, technology will continue to develop, and while it continues to develop people must get used to it and use it wisely. Some people think that technology only gives negative affects but there are also positive outcomes to technology. Addiction, distraction, and online danger are the main problems and all of these have the same difficulty.
