Cyberbullying Hurts! What is cyberbullying? “Cyberbullying is intentional and repeated harm inflicted on people through the use of computers, cellular phones, and other electronic devices” (Cyberbullying 1). The use of technology today has greatly increased, and it is causing problems within the states. Schools are becoming more technological, and some schools even provide students with electronic devices. Four in ten teens have been bullied online, and girls are more likely to be victimized, rather the boys (Phillips). Online social media keeps growing, and it is causing cyberbullying to become more popular. “Nationally, 14.8 percent of students experienced online bullying, According to a 2013 study by the Centers for Disease Control …show more content…
The use of social networking has played a major role in the cyberbullying problem. It is used to hurt kids, and has led to an increase in the reports of cyberbullying in schools (“Cyberbullying” 1). If schools take responsibility, and investigate the cyberbullying, then maybe that would decrease the amount of suicides. Schools are actually legally responsible to investigate student cyberbullying. There have been laws and bills created to help aid the schools on what actions to take when it comes to cyberbullying. The bills and laws have been made to hold schools responsible for providing a safe learning environment for students in some states (Diamanduros and Downs 36-38). This could then help schools deal with the bullying and cyberbullying. Before some laws were passed schools could not do anything to really help the kids that were bullied outside of school, but on January 1st a law took effect to figure out the best way to help kids that were being cyberbullied and what to do when it is reported (Gross 9). Some parents argue that the schools should discipline students that are cyberbullying, but there are parents that actually get upset when schools do take actions. According to Diamanduros and Downs, “The End to Cyberbullying Act, includes acts of bullying that involve computers and electronic communication...even if such acts do not originate on school property or school computers”
Cyberbullying is a form of written and verbal bullying which is conveyed by teens and adolescents through communication technologies such as cell-phones, emails, text messages, websites, webcams and chatrooms. It also includes taking sexual photographs by ex-partners and sending to others after
Did you know that girls are about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber bullying? Although the use of technology has created many opportunities to enhance teaching and learning, it also has led to some severe problems (Morgan, 2013). Online communication can become an addiction, but we have to be careful on what we post or send to other people. Cyberbullying affects people from kinder to college, or even higher. Before the internet, bullies dominated the schoolyard. Now, bullies of twenty-first century release their aggressions online, as cyberspace becomes the “high-tech playground for intimidation” (Albin, 2012). Teens, especially, are reluctant to tell adults—for fear of overreaction,
In 2016, over 25% of adolescents and teens have been cyberbullied and what is even worse is that most of those victims do not get the justice that they rightly deserve. These victims should be compensated for the anxiety and sorrow that the bullies have struck them with. In the following sources, The Dangers of Cyberbullying a radio interview conducted by Brett Warnke and featuring psychologist Eden Foster, Sacrificing the First Amendment to Catch “Cyberbullies” written by Kirk Sigmon, and What is Cyberbullying? from the Ophelia Project, will give evidence for why cyber bullies should be prosecuted.
Cyber bullying refers to the act of bullying through technological means, including cell phones and the internet, and is often anonymous (Cyberbullying). Cyber bullying is used to spread mean and embarrassing information about someone, including messages, pictures, and videos (Cyberbullying). Cyber bullying can include repeated attempts of unwanted contact, sending emails, sending threats, making sexual remarks, using “offensive language”, “posting humiliating [content]”, and “spreading rumors about the victim.”
What is cyberbullying? “Cyberbullying is the use of the Internet, smartphones, or other electronic communication devices to spread harmful or embarrassing information about another person” (Cyberbullying). Cyberbullying is very well known to the world of social media. We used to have bullies who would harass us at school which was bad enough but now worth cyberbullying it follows our teenagers everywhere. Home used to be a safe place but our technology no longer allows that safe place. Not only is the cyberbullying bad for the victim but it is also bad for the person on the other side of the screen making these vicious comments. Anyone can go online and say whatever they want about another person because they are not
Teens have nowhere to hide. Cyberbullying is increasing alongside of advances in technology. Most teens now have access to electronic communications and the Internet, making them easy targets for cyberbullying. Cyberbullies are using e-mail, cell phones and the Internet to cause emotional harm, harass, threaten, ridicule, and exert control over their victims. Additionally, cyberbullied teens are committing suicide at an alarming rate. Cyberbullying must be stopped; it poses psychological trauma and health risks, affects social interpersonal skills, and can ultimately cause suicide. A Cyberbully is able to breach every part of its victim’s life, and keeping teens safe in cyberspace will be a
Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place on digital devices like computers, cell phones, and tablets. Stopbullying.gov say “Cyberbullying can occur over SMS, Text, and apps or online in social media, gaming, where people can participate in, or share content. Cyber Bullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, hurtful, false, or meaningful content about someone else. This can include sharing someone’s personal or private information causing embarrassment or humiliation.” this definition from my perspective is pretty accurate.
Since the early 2000’s bullying has been on the rise. Just about every school has had a bullying problem at least once. Parents are unaware and children don’t want to speak up. The rise of bullying has been caused by the upbringing of new social media sites. Physical bullying has went out the window and cyberbullying is here to stay. Making the community and schools more aware than the amount of situations would go down tremendously. Bullying is caused by numerous things but some of which are easier to suspect than others. There are two main types of cyberbullying; and most importantly, cyberbullying must be stopped before it leads to suicide among its victims.
It is said that cyberbullying is the third killer of teens in America and approximately 4,400 commit suicide each year due to it (Bullying and Suicide). Cyberbullying has become a major issue with teens in today’s society. Sameer Hinduja stated “95% of teens in the US are online, and three-fourths (74%) access the Internet on their mobile device.” This dreadful form of bullying has not only taken effect on teens inside of school, but follows them outside as well, with the use of social media, cellphones, and computers. Although many believe that school officials shouldn’t get involved in cyberbullying because it doesn’t occur on school grounds, others feel if they were more involved, it would result in fewer teen suicides, fewer absences and could help put a stop to cyberbullying across America.
To begin with, cyberbullying occurs very often and people get agonized by it everyday. Schools should be accountable for solving these situations. You meet people at school, you see people at school, everything starts at school. “Cyberbullying is often an extension or escalation of bullying that is already happening at school.”(Hardcastle 2) Most of these cyberbullying incidents occur at home but begin at school. This causes these problems to follow students to school, which ends up distracting them from their homework, assignments, and paying attention in class. This leads the schools to have full responsibility in these incidents. A beginning needs an ending, so if the bullying starts at school it should end at school. There are also much more people who can help with cyberbullying at school. More help means problems can be solved quicker. “Some schools have created forms that students and/or staff may complete to report bullying, including a description of the incident and the location where it occurred, which could be a web address.”(Kowalski 2) Schools have much more help and a lot of ideas. Most importantly, schools can actually do something about cyberbullying and eventually have an end to it.
This research benefits everyone who engages in the social networking on the internet with the primary focus being the school aged adolescents and their parents. By exposing the issue in hand and the negative impacts it carries will hopefully create positive response. Not only is cyberbullying a huge threat in present time, but it can also lead to long term effects that could permanently ruin an individual going through adulthood. Some of these devastating effects include: suicide, grades start dropping, overall school participation begins to decline, depression, and vengeance (Mirsky, E. L., & Omar, H. A. 2015). The more society becomes involves in the situation, the better chance society has in creating new laws to combat cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is a kind of harassment that makes use of the latest electronic technology. This kind of bullying is always on the internet, but people are now even using their phones to bully people, as well. According to the US National Crime Prevention Council, cyberbullying is when the internet, cellphone, and other devices are used to hurt others by sending messages, posting statuses, or sending images to hurt or embarrass someone.
I find out that cyberbullying is a negative impact on social networking, because if you're on a website like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and etc. people bully. They send bad words and some people might even have money taken off them the bully might call you stupid and all that stuff.Privacy is another negative impact on social networking, because people might send pictures of themselves. They might write their house number on a website like Instagram, and etc. people might be more public about their lives. People might put their social security number. Some bad people might hack your profile information and they might use credit card or debit card and steal your money. They might get your job information and work phone number from the website if people hack you. If you do all that your house might be burgled by a theft.
Cyber bullying is the act of a person, or persons, viciously attacking another using electronic media such as email, texting, photos, social media, or video sharing sites. Nasty, hate-filled messages are directed at the bully’s target with the intent to criticize, humiliate, and defame the individual. If available, videos or photos that describe vulgar or inappropriate behavior even when it does not exist are used to further their cause. During this time, the person being bullied is initially hurt, which is the goal of the attack. While the attacks continue, they usually grow in intensity because now the bully knows that the attacks are affecting the individual, and the bully is gaining control. This only encourages the bully to do even more damage. As the bully is successful in breaking down the individual, more and more people take notice and continue the tormenting. The attacks get worse and more frequent, eventually becoming relentless with no sign of letting up. Without help, the individual can become depressed and withdrawn, furthering the bully’s agenda. If parents or authorities do not intervene very soon, a horrifying and terrible disaster is possible. The key to the prevention of cyber bullying begins first with communication. the biggest solution for this problem would be to talk with the victim and try to get them to deal with it in a better way and not let what others say to affect them, good family support would also be
Oh no!I look up sitting next to my friend, and I see tears in her eyes. “What's wrong?” I ask.
