The Necklace theme
Three good examples of a theme are lying, greed, and borrowing.
Lying to someone about something causes you to put in more work than what is necessary if you would of just told someone in the first place. Greed can cause you to lose what you already have. Borrowing things from others can lead to meany things happening to the stuff and if something was to happen the owner is holding you responsible for their items.
Lying to someone about something will cause you more work. “The Necklace” is written by Guy de Maupassant, he introduces mathilde as a hard working person who wants to go to the ball but can not afford anything to wear for it. Early in the story mathilde’s husband gets her
Another example of theme is in the end of the book. This is when Micheal came back to save all of his friends. ‘ “Hatch is about to hurt our friends, and I need to stop him” ’
In The Necklace, Madame Loisel was embarrassed by her poverty which made her state of being even worse with her self-centered actions. Characteristics to describe her actions would be materialistic, ungrateful, and unappreciative. Evidences from the story, about these characteristics, are given to support them. Madame Loisel have plenty of traits that describes her, but the three that stood out the most was materialistic, ungrateful, and unappreciative. With a simple, loving, and caring husband didn’t stop her self-centered actions.
An analysis that can be drawn from the main characters of “The Dancer” by Bashir Sakhawarz and “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant are the similar aspects of aspiring to be wealthy and aging prematurely due to excessive work loads while the contrasting aspects between the characters are their different motivations behind wanting to attain wealth and the type of work that caused their premature aging. Through the main characters, Madame Loisel and the Queen of Akram, these analyses are made possible; as both wrestle with poverty and yet long for an escape by separate means; Loisel in keeping up appearances although beyond her means and the Queen of Akram performing for men to keep off the streets without taking into account their motives. Similarly,
Another example of the theme is in the short story "The Necklace." The theme shows itself in the story when Madame Loisel refuses to wait for her husband to hail a cab in front of the elegant party she had just attended because she doesn't want people to see her shabby wrap. This part shows the theme because she is ashamed to show herself wearing her old, decaying wrap.
Her husband tries and tries until he comes up with a great idea to give her an invitation to a ball. She cheers up a little until she realizes she can’t afford a dress. Her husband asks how much and had given her the money to purchase herself a nice dress. She has the dress but still doesn’t feel pretty nor happy after she put the dress on. She wanted more than just the dress which was jewels but didn’t have any. Someone suggested that she should use flowers, but didn’t find happiness in the flowers. Madame Forestier offer Mathilde to borrow her diamond necklace, which gave her the emptiness that she needed to feel happy. She had a great night and was on her way home when she went to feel for the necklace but found that it was gone. She started to panic and retraced her steps but couldn’t find it anywhere. She and her husband went from jeweler to jeweler to find the exact necklace and to replace it. They worked and worked until they had paid it off and returned it to Madame Forestier. She was a little annoyed since she had got it a few weeks after the ball. Eventually she admitted to what she had done and was surprised with what she was told. She was informed that the necklace was a fake. That it was costume jewelry. In this story the Madame was an outsider towards Mathilde. Mathilde didn’t know who she was and had taken the necklace to wear for the
The first theme I will be talking about is location. Location is a specific place or point. One example of location is where I live. I live in Houston near Walgreens, Belden's and Chase Bank. Another example of location is Plitvice Lakes National Park near Hotel Jezero and Kunlun Restaurant.
The Necklace, by Guy De Maupassant, is about a woman, Mathilde, who will only lie because she doesn’t want to lose any of the fame or class that she has. Mathilde is similar to a bully that doesn’t want to show their true self because they are afraid that others will judge them. She is afraid that people will call her a thief, but in that process, she loses her natural beauty along with everything else she had. Even though both Mathilde and bullies are unique and don’t need to fit in, they lie about themselves and hate others instead of appreciating what they already
‘The Necklace’ is a morality tale written by Guy de Maupassant where he portrays the life of a beautiful but dissatisfied girl named Mathilde who desires to live a luxurious life despite being born into a clerk’s family and marrying a clerk too. Mathilde’s discontentment in life instigates her to pretend someone rich that she is not. Moreover, it leads her to severe trouble that caused ten years of hardship to Mathilde and her husband. So, this suffering is a punishment for Mathilde which taught her a lesson and changed her dramatically over the course of the story by making her a person of completely different personality for whom appearances
Mathilde finds herself dissatisfied with her life. She craves for riches and glamour. Instead of appreciating what she has, Mathilde craves for jewels and high class commodities. One day, her husband receives an invitation to a formal party, which would give Mathilde a chance to experience the luxuries of high society. However, she seems upset because she does not own a formal dress to wear to the ball. Mathilde’s husband feels compassion for her and gives her his savings to buy a new and elegant dress. The night before the ball, we noticed Mathilde’s greed when she complains that she has no ornament to put on. She arrogantly tells her husband, “It's so mortifying to look poverty-stricken among women who are rich” (Maupassant). For this reason, he then advises her to borrow some jewelry from her friend, Madam Forestier. Blinded by greed, Mathilde follows her husband’s advice and borrows what looks like a diamond necklace. At the ball, she has a great time. However, when she and her husband get home, she realizes she has lost the diamond necklace. Worried by the consequences of losing a diamond necklace, Mathilde’s husband decides to buy a new necklace by using his inheritance, getting loans, and borrowing money from acquaintances. They return the necklace to Madam Forestier and focus on paying their debt. After 10 years of hard labor and misery, they eventually pay all their debts. At the end of the short story, Mathilde finds out that the diamond necklace she borrowed was fake. Ultimately, we see how greed drove Mathilde to misery and
Theme is an underlying meaning or main idea of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly. Another simple definition for theme is the lesson the author is trying to tell his or her readers. The theme of the short story, “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty, the theme portrayed is love. This short story is about a elderly woman named Phoenix Jackson who is taking a journey into the woods to receive medicine for her sickly grandson. She begins to follow a old, rugged path that she knows by heart.
Theme is the main idea of a text that we come up with after reading a fictional story. For example, the story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by author Rudyard Kipling, is a story with the main idea or theme that “evil is punished while good is rewarded”. In addition, I am certain that this is the theme because Nagaina, the antagonist, and the other cobras were evil and they got killed which proves “evil is punished” while Rikki-Tikki, the protagonist, was good and he was “rewarded” by winning all of his battles with the cobras. In contrast, some people might say that the theme “accepting challenges brings good results” is right but both Rikki-Tikki, a mongoose, and the cobras “accepted their challenges” when only Rikki got “positive results” by winning all his battles. The cobras died which is how they got a “negative result”. Proving that this can’t be the complete theme.
Theme is a universal teaching that could be used in many other texts. In the article, “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, the authors portray theme throughout the article by the use of literary devices such as irony and personification. Initially, Guy de Maupassant in the text, “The Necklace,” he develops the theme by using irony. For example, Madame Forestier “ Oh, my poor Mathilde!
“The road to hell is paved with good intentions” is a time-honored proverb. Unfortunately for the characters in “The Necklace” and “The Sniper,” it is also an important thing to keep in mind when making decisions. In the short stories “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant and “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, the authors use situational irony, dynamic characters, and suspense to develop a similar theme, in order to show that even with benevolent intentions, acting blindly often has negative consequences.
Find an example of the theme of
