Author Guy de Maupassant introduces Mathilde Loisel’s character as ungrateful and obstinate, but throughout the course of the “Necklace”, she becomes more dynamic. Though everything is tidy and serviceable in the Loisels’ modest apartment, Mathilde is unhappy with the “ugly” curtains, despite the fact that she has a cleaning girl and little to do all day besides daydream of a better life. Mathilde’s mindset and happiness revolves around the concept of a finer life and gratification through wealth alone. While initially she was self entitled and had the most surreal expectations, the fate and irony she would soon encounter, changed this mindset she held.
