The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), which was established in 1969 is the only national agent of students’ knowledge throughout the United States. Within the United States, individual states use a state-wide testing system. The state-wide systems use standardized tests. All tests consist of the same exact set of questions and are scored the same way. The testing system is used to measure academic achievements. In addition to the state-wide tests, educators use classroom evaluations, tests, quizzes, mid-terms, homework and final exams to further evaluate the students’ progress within the class. The state scores have students apply their skills thorough understanding of topics and the ability to apply skills.
Although, standardized testing has several purposes the main purpose is accountability. The continued pressure on educators and schools to get the best results creates added stress and pressure on educators and students. The added stress to the students often creates a lack of confidence and students begin to develop a negative attitude about test taking and abilities. In addition, the teachers often spend many classes teaching students the materials on the test, rather than focusing on the subject and the students understanding of the subject. Furthermore, classroom creativity and students ability to be engaged becomes diminished. The standardized test structure only evaluates the students’ scores and does not account for the external factors. Some of these external factors are home life, or population groups.
