The Sherriff even took them for a tour around the city showing them around. All this time Aurora the protector was watching the visitors keenly, but soon dropped her guard and relaxed.

“Beneath the gore and smoke and loam, this book is about the evanescence of life, and why some men choose to fill their brief allotment of time engaging the impossible, others in the manufacture of sorrow. In the end it is a story of the ineluctable conflict between good and evil, daylight and darkness, the White City and the Black.” (xi) This shows the contrast between the White City and the Black City. One, perfect, beautiful, magical, the other dark, filthy, evil. The two work together yet against each other in the battle to win over the hearts of the people who visit, and those who decide to stay
The Roman Republic began in 509 B.C.E. with the overthrow of the Etruscan monarchy. In 27 B.C.E the Roman Empire began with Octavian Caesar becoming the emperor, this ended almost 500 years of republican self-government. There is much debate over why Rome became so powerful so quickly. Many think it had to do with Rome’s military strength. Others think that it was because Rome knew of and controlled most of the trade routes. Still others believed it had to do with the technology that was advanced during the Roman Republic. All of these factors played significant roles, but which one played the most important role?
The lights of the town were veiled in darkness, a mere inverted shadow amidst the gloom of the night. Distant thunderings, as those brought to mind with Dies Irae or the distant chattering of a great blaze could be heard, drawing nigh upon the trembling hands of the people frantically seeking a shade for the lights that would soon propagate should their brilliance stretch to the skies, but found difficulty locating even their hands at arm’s length, due to the cloud over the town, in the streets, as real and thick as the blanket of golden and crimson extending toward the town at a propeller’s rate, silencing the natural beauty of the countryside amid the sounds of death and destruction.
As she waited for her hapless victim, she thoroughly glances at the city without even blinking an eye. The red sun was collecting its rays as it set from miles away. Every corner of the city was becoming darker and darker each moment, night time was approaching. Alleys that were once bright and clear became the Stygian depths of an ocean. Once in awhile she follows the oval flying pods with her hazel eyes; then she catches a glimpse at the pink buoyant clouds. With her favorite weapon (boon of decay) by her side, she continued eyeing at the city from a rooftop for hours.

Rome’s creation myth begins with the story of Romulus and Remus, the tragic story of twin brothers who were born into nobility, nearly killed as newborns, and who ultimately engage in conflict resulting the death of one and the founding of an empire by the other. Rome’s creation myth tells the story of a mythical leader who, against all odds, triumphs, and as he prevails, so does Rome.
There are no marble arches and no lighthouses. The river has dried up with the memory of the empire and the bones of a dead leader have long since turned to dust. Colossal galleons and crowds to greet victorious soldiers are no longer even a memory in the minds of those alive today, simply words on paper in books gathering dust in the darkest corner of a room. There is no-one to remember the beauty of the vast city; no-one to describe the sight of the lighthouses and no-one to recall the crisp aroma of the once majestic river. All that remains are the few paintings and statues that did not dissolve with time. The dust of the bones of men, women and children long since dead has faded from existence. There is no-one left to remember the man selling wares in the street or the woman grieving over the soldier she loved. Nobody holds the memory of the child playing in the park or the servant bringing a pitcher of water to his master. The meaning behind the statue has faded from everyone’s mind. The man, whose wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command secured his victory in every battle he fought, has dissolved into nothing more than a story in a book.
What is one to make of the city of Omelas? It is a fantastical place so transcendental that the author herself struggles to properly detail its majesty. Omelas has everything— it is beautiful, technologically advanced, and bears no need for organized religion. The atmosphere is rich with music, festivities, and orgies. And even with all this excessive indulgence, the people manage to remain elite: expert craftsman in every art, scholars of the highest caliber, gentle mothers and fathers, and all-around good people. However, all this prosperity comes with a price. The success and happiness of Omelas stems from the immense
Many people dared to go inside the great cities walls, only to never come back out again. The city consumed people in darkness and never let them go. Until one day, a boy was travelling with his mother, Euphora. Euphora was a beautiful woman, she was talented and was extremely smart. She could steal the hearts of men just with the flick of her finger, but she never used this to her advantage. Her son, Peter, was an orphan. Peter had come from a very poor family and was constantly abused by his
Surprisingly, today, some inventions, beliefs, and ideas, are still around today, even some derived from Ancient Greek and Roman era. The buildings and streets in the Place of the Gods are crumbled and destroyed with no trace of the gods. There was also an ominous threat, the Great Burning, which resulted in making the story’s setting look disastrous. The story stays interesting with the careful choice of words the author picks out. For example, “Then I raised my eyes and looked south. It was there, in the red light, and they were too big to be houses.
There are many different religions within the world. From Judaism, to Hinduism, to even what the Egyptians believed. The greatest one to study though is definitely the Roman religion. From minotaurs to hydras to even the Gods. The Roman religion has so many interesting stories, such as how their nation came to be through Romulus and and Remus. Two weeks after arriving in Florence, while walking home from dinner across the river, stumbled upon Piazza della Signoria, for the first time. With the sound of a street performer’s violin in the crisp night air, I sat on the edge of the open-air gallery of statues. I still do not know why the piazza affected me the way it did, but with tears in my eyes, I knew I had found a place in Florence where I could be bitter sweetly happy.
This story is considered to be a foundation myth for Rome. One of many. This myth connected Ancient Rome to Ancient Troy. Aeneas was a Trojan and the son of Aphrodite. The gods send him on a mission to found a new great city: Rome. In addition, the story helped legitimise the rule of Caser Augustus, who to end the Republic and start and empire. Augustus linked his lineage to Aeneas and thus he was the descendent of the founder of Rome.
