Selena Quintanilla was the daughter of Marcela and Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. She was born April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas. Selena was the youngest out of three children. Her older siblings were Abraham III, and Suzette. Selena’s father discovered her talent one day while he sat in the living room playing the guitar and she came over and began to sing. Her voice was pure and perfect. “I could see it from day one”, her father said. Selena’s father quit his job in the plant he worked for and opened a restaurant where Selena performed every weekend with her brother and sister calling themselves “Selena y Los Dinos”. The restaurant went down after the Texas oil bust, putting Texas in a recession. Selena and her family then started touring all over Texas and the US performing at weddings and honky tonks.

The famous singer and songwriter, Miranda Lambert, has impacted many lives with her songs. Miranda was raised in Lindale, Texas (“Miranda Lambert”). This is where many of her songs take place. She suddenly became very interested in the country music business at age nine ("Miranda Lambert Artistfacts"). This interest was sparked when her parents took her to see Garth Brooks in concert ("Miranda Lambert Artistfacts"). She entered her first country music talent show at only age ten (“Miranda Lambert”). Soon after learning guitar from her father, Miranda later began writing her own songs (“Miranda Lambert”). In 2001, her family paid and promoted her very first CD (“Miranda Lambert”). Miranda Lambert soon made a name for herself, when she auditioned for a country music reality show, Nashville Star (“Miranda Lambert”). She finished her career on this show placing third ("Miranda Lambert Artistfacts"). Although, after the show, she landed a record deal with Sony Music (“Miranda Lambert”). In 2005, she release a very successful album, Kerosene (“Miranda Lambert”). In fact, it became number one on the Billboard country music chart ("Miranda Lambert Artistfacts"). Every music artist begins somewhere. Every artist had to do something to get their music out there. No one just automatically becomes famous. Then everyone wants to listen to your music. You start out new and anonymous and become more popular over time. Artist become famous by advertising. Every music artist should be able to advertise.

After performing with her band numerous times in Paris, she finally put out her first album in 2009, called “Cecile”. This album influenced her so much that it led her to win her first competition, at the age of 21, in Washington D.C which was the “Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition”. She was rewarded with contracts that gave her opportunities to record with record labels like Mace Avenue Records. Under this label she released her second album called “Woman Child” and also her third album called “For One to Love”, which was released in 2014.

I propose that all unsigned rising artist should target the business side of the music industry to be successful in the entertainment business because it allows the artist to be taken seriously and make solid connections that can further his/her career. Learning the works of the music industry also enables a new artist to be further successful and profitable. Recent studies show that most new artists without professional representation and a business mindset have a slimmer chance in getting signed to major or independent labels (Lowry, 2011). Overall, the specific change needed is that unsigned artists should be concentrating on their careers as professionals and not amateurs, thus focusing on the ins and outs of the music business and

There is no disputing that society is influenced by its choices of entertainment. Some ways in which people are influenced are positive, but others are harmful. In the society we live in, the harmful ways always outnumber the positive. If we gravitated toward the positive forms of entertainment a little more often than the negative, then our society would have fewer problems. Popular music has a negative effect on society and endorses a lack of creativity.

The music industry has changed in very quickly in so many ways it almost seems impossible. Thomas Edison recorded the first voice in 1877 and now we listen to hundreds of different types of music on devices that hold more information than the computers that sent the first astronaut to the moon. People have been getting music in tons of ways for the past hundred plus years and when the internet came into the picture, the music industry sky rocketed. People could get their own music out and be heard just by clicking a few measly buttons and using the internet to stream millions of songs with high speed. But even though the internet has helped the music industry by making it easier to distribute, advertise, and produce music, it still has its disadvantages.

When musicians produce albums, they want people to listen to the albums. There is not one specific way for a band or single musician to gain an audience and promote their music. Musicians use many different kinds of media to promote their music. They use visual media as well as strictly listening media. The radio, television, and the internet are all different types of media musicians use to promote their music.
