The modern high fat diet commonly referred to as a ketogenic diet can be achieved in a manner not unlike a normal carbohydrate diet. Where roasts and salmon and vegetables are not just a normal part of the diet but essential. Though it is dangerous to start a ketogenic diet without a little bit of research. This is due to many essential nutrients that we normally source through plants such as wheat, potatoes, rice, and corn, which are extremely high in carbohydrate. With these foods being too high in carbohydrates to be a significant portion of one’s diet when on a ketogenic diet, one must search for alternatives. Spinach, avocado, and Swiss chard for instance is a very good source of potassium, magnesium, and fiber. Let us break this down. Potassium is essential for maintaining a regular heartbeat. Magnesium is used to make proteins and regulate nerve function. Both magnesium and potassium deficiency can cause the development of psychological conditions. Finally fiber helps the body keep itself clean. Though one may find that despite many excellent alternative sources of required nutrients, the foods that one could prepare may seem very foreign to what one has known. It is important to know that lacking any of these materials can result in serious side effects. In many cases it is often necessary to supplement during the initial dietary switch as one takes for granted the abundant quantities of potassium magnesium and calcium in the common staple diet. So while fat is the
In comparison with my DRIs, my intake of kcalories from carbohydrates, protein, and fat are all within or below the recommended ranges. When I compared my Macronutrient Distribution to my DRI, I realized that I was very close to recommended amount of fat intake. One thing that I could improve on is my protein consumption. My carbohydrate intake is also something I can improve on being that it was below the daily-recommended intake. Looking at my Energy Balance report and comparing the calories that I consumed versus my energy expenditure I can interpret that I did not burn any of the calories that I consumed. Over the summer my goal was to do at least an hour of cardio daily. Since the semester has started I have fallen off. Therefore, I am creating a plan in which I will incorporate cardio into

High protein or ketogenic diets, those like the well-known Atkins, are based solely on large consumptions of proteins and fats while they restrict carbohydrates to a nearly invisible amount. Although dieters are eating plenty of meat and getting their protein, possibly even an overload, they are receiving very little, if any, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other nutrient rich foods, which are essential to a well balanced diet ("High Protein Diets"). A study conducted on Atkins meals reveals that, along with having too much protein and too little carbohydrates, they are unusually high in saturated fat and cholesterol while minimal in fiber. The meals also fail to meet the "recommended daily values for several vitamins and minerals" ("How does . . .?"). Therefore, with this type of diet, it is vital to one's health that vitamins and minerals are consumed by means of supplements. There are some nutrients, though, that cannot be acquired any other way than directly from the source ("The Dangers . . ."). According to Ellen Coleman's article, "Even Dr. Atkins . . . admits that his diet doesn't supply enough vitamin [sic] and minerals and recommends that people take supplements."

Fat was viewed as the original epitome of evil when it came to health issues. However, as of recently, the tides may have changed and redirected towards sugar. The American diet has been reducing fat but sugar-related issues like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease has continued to plague Americans. Some scientists put the blame on sugar and the increasing sugar content in all the foods that are being consumed. Still, it is hard to prove this and studies are tackling the issue. However, studies and journals are being published to analyze the difference in health when we replace sugar with starch and the possible patterns that will be revealed.
In this past year alone there have been 23 shootings on college campuses, not including incidents that have occurred at other grade level schools. Innocent students and teachers have been injured or killed in each of these shootings. School shootings are not restricted to one geographic area; they are spread across the United States, from Arizona to Florida to every thing in between. There is no way to tell when or where events like this will occur, so many wonder how to prevent traumatic events like this. In the United States all 50 states have passed laws to allow concealed carry, but only under certain restrictions and mandates.
The Western Diet mainly consists of fried foods, refined grains, sugar, high carbohydrate and fats, and meats (3). It has been hypothesized that having a Western Diet increases one’s chances for developing depression. There has been a great deal of research into why the western diet increase’s one chance of having depression. A common sense reason maybe that the Western Diet consisted of large amounts carbohydrates, fats and sugars which promotes obesity and then causes depression (1). More scientific evidence suggest that having a improper diet like the Western Diet negatively affects peripheral and central dopamine, which are neurotransmitters (chemical which transmit signals across the synapse from the nerve cell to the target cell)

The basis of our being is cellular, with nutrition being one necessity a cell needs to function. Nutrition comes from the food we consume where it is digested and broken down into simple nutrients. Each food having a different nutritional value. Is the diet we, as American’s, consume nutritionally filled? What role does a typical western diet play in relationship to the diseases we treat in healthcare today? In going back to the diet of our ancestors, consuming a Paleolithic diet, also known as a caveman or stone-age diet decreases the amount of chronic inflammation one has, thereby reducing risk factors for major diseases we treat in healthcare today.
