“The Mission” is a motion picture, directed by Roland Joffe in 1986, about a Jesuit mission that is threatened by greed and imperialism in the late 18th century in the Brazilian jungle. Father Gabriel, played by Jeremy Irons, climbs the mountains of Brazil to bring Christianity to the natives. He is successful and brings about a golden age among them. Mendoza, played by Robert De Niro, a slave trader, kills his brother, Felipe played by Aidan Quinn, in a fit of rage over a woman named Carlotta, played by Cherie Lunghi. Only Fr. Gabriel's leadership prevents his suicide. Gabriel brings Mendoza to work at his mission with the natives, and Mendoza finds peace and asks to become a priest. The Church, under pressure, gives the land up to the …show more content…
In this movie, that translates into, how the Portuguese only wanted to gain these lands for profit. Since natives lived there the Portuguese wanted to gain the land so they could trade slaves there. This was the whole reason Mendoza disregarded his vows and fought against the Portuguese. The other reason, imperialism, is the policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by the establishment of economic and political domination over other nations. In this case, the Portuguese wanted to acquire the lands belonging to the natives because of economic reasons.
The major theme of this movie is represented in a quote. This quote is, “The church is the bride of Christ, she is also the cross on which he is daily crucified.” The Bride of Jesus Christ is not a what, it’s a who. She is the many membered body of Jesus Christ that is carrying on the Message sent to her from God, she is the Church. “For the marriage of the Lamb is come, And His wife hath made herself ready.” –Revelation 19:7, and “And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.”-Revelation 21:9, are two quotes from the Bible including the word “bride”, this bride referred to is the Church. When we say “it is the cross on which he is daily crucified,” to me seems to be talking about the Eucharist and mass. Everyday the
While many obstacles get in the way of friendship, true friendship still lives, even in silence. In the book, The Chosen , By Chaim Potok, two boys, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders, who are very religiously different and both raised in completely opposite ways, develops a deep friendship. Their friendship opens up their worldview to many other different viewpoints in life. The friendship between these two boys is one with great religious significance, starting off with destiny and Gods will. As Danny and Reuven’s Friendship develops, it teaches them to respond wisely to the values of the more complex and secular world. It also teaches the true value of friendship. Because Danny’s father, Reb
This shows the Spaniards being cognizant of the Native struggle and being advantageous (Document B). In document E, according to Duarte Barbosa, a Portuguese merchant, The King of Portugal believes that anybody who doesn't believe or obey him will be destroyed and taken over. In 1514, the King of Portugal took over a proud king from the East coast of Africa by force and killed and captured many people. In 1519, Hernan Cortes wrote to King Charles V of Spain saying that he stumbled across a large town filled with innocent women and children and he proceeded to do them harm and treat them like animals and take over the town with the help of God. This lead to the people recognizing the power of God, leaving them hopeless and hostile (Document F). In 1494, Christopher Columbus stumbled upon a new land called Hispania, which is an Island located in present day Haiti and back then, just a land in the New World. Columbus describes to the to the Spanish Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, that this Island is filled with products that can benefit the Spanish such as honey, iron, plains, fields, and land for building houses (Document C). This message presents the ambition that the Spanish had only two years after
When the native’s didn’t accept the explorers trying to convert them, things took a turn for the worse. The Spanish wanted the land and which is why, “...The empire would control the land itself and the people who lived there, and extract wealth from them to enrich the empire.” as the video explains (Crash
As with playing the “What If” game (asking “what if” incessantly to explore each aspect of a situation), so did a chain of events occur that caused this relationship to form.

The opening scenes in the movie shows a man tied to a cross who is set to float down the river and eventually falls over the robust waterfall. He was a man sent by the jesuits to assimilate the Guarani people, however his death is unjustified in the movie which leads us to consequently assume that the Guarani people were at fault for his death. Correspondingly, father Gabriel comes to deliver the message of christianity to the Guarani people and establish a mission on their land. Most Jesuit missions served as a form of protection for the Guarani natives from slave traders, owing to the fact that the Jesuit missions had strict regulations about visiting outsiders. By means of enforcement Jesuits only allowed the spanish or Portuguese to spend a maximum of three days in their community. Nonetheless, Jesuit beliefs were conflicted by the actions of the Portuguese and the spanish that conflicted with their impact on societal function, coming into the new world. Considering the circumstances the, the Jesuits were compelled to make decisions
Putting yourself in the shoes of the managers or engineers in the case (Ron Dittemore, Linda Ham, Don McCormack, Rodney Rocha, Pamela Madera, Calvin Schomburg), consider the following questions?
‘The Mission’ is a piece that I wrote and is about a suicide mission a squad of Special Forces members are volunteered for. This piece is aimed at those with an interest in the military or action pieces however the moral is political in nature and thus this piece could be categorised as primarily political. I believe that ‘The Mission’ is an effective piece for both its military and political audiences, more so the military however. This is because of a small number of reasons, one being the military acronyms; another is the detailed combat scene, and lastly the military allusions used for example, eating as much as you can before leaving for a mission. This piece also may not appeal to the political audience to the same extent as it does to
On my last mission trip, I learned that studying the Bible proves a vital piece of Christianity. For example, if a professor lectures a class on history, but he does not study on his material, he cannot defend what he teaches. So as a Christian, I must study the Bible to defend my beliefs. When I conversed to my neighbor once, he said that he did not believe in God and that he questioned why I should believe in God as well. To say the least, I felt quite lost. I did not know how to defend my belief, much less try to convince him why he should believe in God. After the mission trip, I studied my Bible more to have a better ability to defend and share my faith. Just recently, I attended a lock in and had the chance to help a younger student.
For the honors program, I will continue to personally apply the implications of the Gospel. Meaning, beholding Christ in the gospel, learning the proper relationship of dependency, and the cost of discipleship, making a commitment to holiness, and developing Bible-based convictions. In terms of the everyday application of scripture, it implies learning to make the right choices, mortifying sin, and being wary of temptation. My interests and prospective major fall directly under the same category: both assert the call to be aware of the Lord’s work, prompt His cause, seek his glory, and honor Him. This program offers me a chance to interact and learn with other students and peers of a similar caliper, all eagerly pursuing personal academics and Christ. I’m excited to invest in the rigorous academics, as well as the social opportunities to grow relationships and pour into fellow students.

My personal mission theology is disciplining and proclaiming the pure word of God in the correct context to those that claim to be abiding in Jesus Christ. This includes pointing out and warning them against false doctrine and belief systems. Contrasting what the modern institutions preach about what it means to be a child of God against what scripture actually says it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.
Ambition is a strong desire to do or achieve something. Many people view ambition as a positive aspect, many do not. The great things that people have accomplished are driven by ambition. Yet, too much ambition can drive someone to have very destructive actions. Ambition is a negative trait based on the fact that it gives you a careless attitude and gets you wealthy but not exactly satisfied.
The summer issue of the online magazine Inspire was the first issue released following the armed assault on the Paris offices of the Charlie Hebdo weekly newspaper by the sons of Algerian immigrants born in France. Produced by al-Malahim for al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in English and Arabic, this issue of Inspire is 88 pages long and glorifies previous terror events and serves as a tutorial guide for assassinations. Inspire was created by editor and publisher Samir Khan, a naturalized American who moved Yemen to join al-Qaeda. Inspire lacks the sleek production of Resurgence. The images are mostly moody black and white photographs and single-color graphics, and the visual composition of the articles lack style and flourish. Instead of flash, Inspire serves as a terrorist’s instruction manual providing clear step-by-step photographs for building explosives as well as the fundamentals of planning, targeting and executing assassinations. A list of suggested targets including influential economists and wealthy business owners is included. The investigation into the Boston bombing revealed that the both Tsarnaev brothers had copies of as earlier issue of Inspire magazine that included an article called “Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom,’’ with details instructions for building the pressure cooker bombs used in the attack. The Boston Bombers are praised in
Christ is the leader of the Church, Paul in Ephesians 1:22 said “God placed everything under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the Church” however, God entrusted the authority to lead to his servant whom he set them aside to lead the community. Pastor as a public Leadership is to lead community. A person who is called by God to lead public has a responsibility to be in the community, with the community and for the community. One of best questions raised in the class during public leadership discussion was “How we can be a community pastor rather than just a church pastor?” This really a kind of question we are to consider as pastor especially as rural congregation pastor. In most cases when pastor are called to
