Pedophilia is defined by the Encyclopedia of Victimology and Crime Prevention as,” a psychological disorder experienced when an individual has recurrent, intense sexual urges, or sexually arousing fantasies of engaging or repeatedly engaging in sexual activity with a child”. [7] Society unintentionally allows pedophilia. Probably because being a pedophile isn’t a crime until they act on their desires or because of the simple fact that mental disorders have always been disregarded. However, by omitting pedophilic tendencies, mankind has been willingly contributing to the never ending battle of child molestation. Pedophilia suffers from the same construct as the movie “The minority Report”. Even though someone portrays the signs of pursuing …show more content…
This explains the “out of sight, out of mind” mentality society has developed towards disabilities like pedophilia. Not all pedophiles become child molesters. What distinguishes a pedophile from a child molester is their ability to act on their urges. The New York Times introduced virtuous pedophiles, which is defined as,” people who vow never to touch a child and yet live in terror”. [6] These are people that recognize their disorder: however, can’t seek help because of their rational fear of losing out on educational or business opportunities. Their fear of being seen as nothing more than our common misconceptions would run them into the arms of their urges. To support this Neuropanthology.net states,” Most people are in denial that pedophilia exists in their community or home. Pedophiles, however, will go to great lengths to continue their compulsive behavior. They will volunteer in church youth groups, coach youth athletic teams, and find other ways to associate with potential victims. Many times, they place themselves in positions where they can easily meet children”. [3] There have been several cases of child molesters being acquaintances of the family or a family member. However, the family “fail” to notice a person hovering over their child. The Darkness to Light website provided statistics on the perpetrators within child sexual abuse cases and it showed,”
Pedophilic tendencies tend to be lifelong which is why it is important to analyze childhood. Many individuals whom are considered pedophilic report being aware since childhood. As a child, it is
Pedophiles: are those that develop a sexual interest over a long period of time. Commit their crimes for a variety of reasons and go on committing their crimes with little hopes of rehabilitation. The internet serves purpose to many pedophiles today, allowing them to commit a crime and computer crime.
Many theories have come about to try to help explain pedophilia. There is a four factor theory that was created by Finkelhor and Araji. The four factors they contribute to why individuals are attracted to children and do what they do are emotional congruence, sexual arousal to children, blockage, and disinhibition. Emotional congruence helps to explain the “idea of a fit between the adult’s emotional needs and the child’s characteristics” (Finkelhor & Araji, 1986, p. 148). The theories that fall under this category each explain or add to the definition. Hammer and Glueck (1957) and Groth and Burgess (1979) believed pedophiles experience themselves as children and have childish needs (as cited in Finkelhor & Araji, 1986, p. 148). This theory
Harding wrote an article on pedophilia stating that pedophilia is a subcategory of a larger group of sexual disorders commonly classified as paraphilias. “These are defined as recurrent, intense, aphrodisiac fantasies, sexual urges,

Pedophilia is a psychological disorder in which a person is primarily or exclusively attracted to children who have not undergone puberty. A pedophile, the term for a person with this condition, is not necessarily one who engages in sexual activities with children. However, they have strong urges and sexually arousing fantasies about having sex with a child. Generally, pedophiles are attracted to children under the age of thirteen years. In our society the term pedophile is more broadly used for anyone who is attracted to a minor or someone that's under the age of consent. However, there are different terms used for different types of paraphilias involving minors. A paraphilia is a
The atypical sexual behavior that I cannot wrap my head around is pedophilia. I have tried to educate myself on this topic and read a book on treating the offender but my opinion has remained the same. I just cannot understand how or why this occurs and I really don’t think I want to.
Since pedadphiles have different ages that they go for, they have made different levels of punishment depending on age, with the younger one violates, the longer they’ll go to jail. “Abusers that commit molestation in which a victim is not touched but still violated, they may face a maximum sentence of up to eighteen years in jail. This includes nudity, inappropriate actions, and alike. This type of offense also carries stipulations based on age. If the victim is in the age range of 0-16, the consequences are surprisingly lower. If the offense is violent however, the consequences are higher” (Laws.com). This law makes it so that if someone wants to violate a child of any age and they get caught, they can serve a maxium penalty of 18 years in prison. The punishment increases if you sexually assault a children under the age of 10. “A sex crime regarding the molestation of children ages 0-10 years old can result in twenty five years of imprisonment. Molestation that is pressured is punishable up to fourteen years. When this same sex crime is committed on a minor between the years of 0-10 the prison time can amount to a maximum of twenty years” (Laws.com). This is when a man would rape a younger child to satisfy
All these feelings of loneliness and having the idea of grandiosity demonstrate that there might not be a cure for it. Pedophilia, just like alcoholism, may not be curable, in which case the main thing that can be expected of any treatment is a commitment to never be alone with children. There is no method of therapy that can actually remove the impulses of sex offenders, however, there are ways to prevent the offenders from reoffending.
In 2002 the Catholic Church was rocked with scandalous reports of Priests sexually molesting young children and particularly boys. The scandal is the result of numerous investigations, allegations, arrests, trials, convictions and imprisonment of Catholic Priests. It became largely reported that once trusted and respected Catholic Priests were pedophiles. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) categorizes pedophilia as a mental disorder if the sexual fantasies or urges involve prepubescent children , if they last six months or longer, if the individual has acted on them, or if they cause marked distress” (American Psychiatric Association, 2000).
Most people consider pedophiles to be anyone who has committed a sex offense against a child and that all pedophiles will commit this offense. In both cases that is, at best, a half truth. The DSM-5, which is a tool that outlines the diagnostic criteria for a given disorder, defines pedophilic disorder as, “a paraphilia involving intense and recurrent sexual urges towards and fantasies about prepubescent children that have either been acted upon or which cause the person with the attraction distress or interpersonal difficulty.” With the latter half of this definition, we begin to open up to the idea that there are those who have sexual interests in children who have had no form of inappropriate contact with a child, but rather just have their daily life affected by the feelings that they are having toward
The definition of “child sexual abuse” has come a long way since its origin. Today, it is defined as any sexual act between an adult and a minor, or between two minors, when one exerts power over the other; this includes non-contact acts such as exhibitionism, exposure to pornography, voyeurism, and communicating in a sexual manner by phone or Internet. However, the issue of child sexual abuse was irrelevant until it was brought to the public’s attention by Western
Throughout the ages, media and society have been concerned over children. Instead of youth as folk devils, children nowadays serve as the victims of folk devils (Critcher, 2002, p.532). With these trigger events popping up, stereotypes are gradually formed. In recent British history, Paedophile had become one of the most terrifying folk-devils (Jenkins, 1992, p.99). Paedophile behaviour is a moral panic one legal case and the panic is generally fuelled by the sensationalism of media in
A boy of 12 who raped a nine-year-old girl after watching hard-core pornography online was spared jail yesterday as his lawyer warned of a generation of children growing up with a ‘skewed view’ on sex. The schoolboy, who is now 14, told police he had raped the little girl because he wanted to ‘feel grown up’ after watching porn online. … He then ‘emulated’ the graphic footage and attacked a neighbour’s daughter, the High Court in Edinburgh heard.(Camber, 2012)
This paper reflected on the importance of my self-awareness of bias towards pedophilia in the social work profession, and how it might intervene negatively with my partnerships with clients and their healing process if left unchecked. The first step was to identify my bias towards pedophilia and explain its possible causes. After identifying pedophilia as my bias, I looked back and reflected when I developed it and the emotional responses I experienced for my bias to be created. To counterpart my bias towards pedophilia I researched two scholarly journals: (1) to properly define pedophilia and (2) to explain pedophilia by the four-factor model. Consecutively, I reflected on the consequences of my bias towards pedophilia when hypothetically
