Many theories have come about to try to help explain pedophilia. There is a four factor theory that was created by Finkelhor and Araji. The four factors they contribute to why individuals are attracted to children and do what they do are emotional congruence, sexual arousal to children, blockage, and disinhibition. Emotional congruence helps to explain the “idea of a fit between the adult’s emotional needs and the child’s characteristics” (Finkelhor & Araji, 1986, p. 148). The theories that fall under this category each explain or add to the definition. The atypical sexual behavior that I cannot wrap my head around is pedophilia. I have tried to educate myself on this topic and read a book on treating the offender but my opinion has remained the same. I just cannot understand how or why this occurs and I really don’t think I want to.

Since pedadphiles have different ages that they go for, they have made different levels of punishment depending on age, with the younger one violates, the longer they’ll go to jail. “Abusers that commit molestation in which a victim is not touched but still violated, they may face a maximum sentence of up to eighteen years in jail. Molestation that is pressured is punishable up to fourteen years. When this same sex crime is committed on a minor between the years of 0-10 the prison time can amount to a maximum of twenty years” (Laws.com). All these feelings of loneliness and having the idea of grandiosity demonstrate that there might not be a cure for it. Pedophilia, just like alcoholism, may not be curable, in which case the main thing that can be expected of any treatment is a commitment to never be alone with children. There is no method of therapy that can actually remove the impulses of sex offenders, however, there are ways to prevent the offenders from reoffending.

In 2002 the Catholic Church was rocked with scandalous reports of Priests sexually molesting young children and particularly boys. Most people consider pedophiles to be anyone who has committed a sex offense against a child and that all pedophiles will commit this offense. In both cases that is, at best, a half truth. This paper reflected on the importance of my self-awareness of bias towards pedophilia in the social work profession, and how it might intervene negatively with my partnerships with clients and their healing process if left unchecked. The first step was to identify my bias towards pedophilia and explain its possible causes.
