Early modern Europe, specifically Spain and England, was going through major growing pains in the period before discovery and settlement of the New World. Recovery from the Black Plague, religious reformation, and newly formed nation-states were on the forefront of these changes. The political environment, economy, and religion were all intertwined during the upheaval of the Old World which proved to be a driving force in the search for and eventual settlement of new lands.

The Middle ages came after the fall of Rome, no single state or government united the people who lived on the European continent. Instead, the Catholic Church became the most powerful institution of the medieval period. Kings, queens and other leaders derived much of their power from their alliances with and protection of the Church. There were many different events that occurred during the middle ages that gave this time periods all of the different titles. The impacts on the middle ages were feudalism, dark ages, and most importantly faith.

There are many contrasts in the beliefs and values of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages was a time of great suffering, including famine and widespread disease. The Renaissance, however, was a revival of art, learning, and literature. Their views of the purpose of life in the present world and man's place in the world was, perhaps, the greatest contrast. However, their views on politics, religion, and education were very different as well.

Imagine having to bury your own children. How awful would that be? The Middle Ages were a brutal time that included the bubonic plague, many wars and other horrible things. This period is considered to be one of religion and the Catholic Church, but this was overshadowed by chaos and confusion. Although the Middle Ages is often known as the age of faith, a more appropriate title for the time period would be The Dark Ages because of the black death, wars and the collapse of government.

The Elizabethan Era is often referred to as the Golden Age of England (A Changing View...). The Elizabethan Era, named after Queen Elizabeth I, was a time of change and discovery (Elizabethan Superstitions). Elizabeth ruled in a time of religious turmoil; both the Catholics and Protestants fought to be the official religion of England. (Elizabethan World View). Many people throughout England struggled to find the “correct” religion (Elizabethan World View). Religion was changing and so did science. During the late 1500’s science began to evolve; new ideas, concepts, and beliefs were starting to emerge (A Changing View). Magic was considered to be very similar to science in this era. Living in the medieval time period was not as glamorous as it is often portrayed; peasants and serfs led hard lives, however, kings, lords, and knights lived lavishly and at the expense of those under them. In this paper you will read about all of these lifestyles, as well as the castles in which these lords and kings lived in. Forms and uses of power during the Middle Ages were very influential to all aspects of societies. Power affected how people lived their lives during the Middle Ages because it had a role in religion and government. It also affected people differently according to what status you held within the community. Gender was also a factor in how power affected people during this time because men and women were treated very differently during the Middle Ages. Forms and uses of power during this time would alter societies for a very long time to come.

The Hundred Years War was the last great medieval war. It was a war not just between Kings, but lesser nobles were also able to pursue their own personal agendas while participating in the larger conflict. Future wars saw far less factionalism, at least on the scale found in medieval conflicts. The Hundred Years War was actually dozens of little wars and hundreds of battles and sieges that went on for over a century until both sides were exhausted. In "The Book of the Courtier" Baldesar Castiglione not only included a perfect courtier, he also molded his female equivalent, a Court lady. If I had lived in the Middle Ages, I would rather have been royalty living in a castle than living dangerously as a member of the Crusades. I would have loved the amount of power with a lot of money and the respect of people. I do not like living in the danger circumtances, stressful, and scenes killing each other.

During the Early Middle Ages, a common practice of feudalism began. Knights formed a relationship with a local king in order to receive protection, fief, and justice. In return, knights had the duty to stay true and serve their lord unconditionally, whether on the battlefield, in a council, or wherever the king goes. Likewise, the knights under a lord were called to fight alongside one another unto death. If death grasped ahold of one of their fellow companions, the vassals were called to avenge their comrade’s bloodshed (Stowell). Portrayed as a brave, noble knight, Roland exhibits the ideal characteristics that a king in the Middle Ages would have desired to have under his service. However, Roland suffers from a key internal flaw: pride. A flaw that ultimately brings death and destruction upon thousands of French troops. Yet, Roland is still pictured as a hero by the end of the Song of Roland. Why does he receive so much praise? Because Roland realizes his prideful judgment and responds in a heroic way. Even with his pride, Roland still represents a heroic vassal because of his utmost determination in the face of death, his display of honor to the fallen vassals, and his faithfulness to his heavenly Lord in the end.

In order to study the troubadours, it is of high importance to understand the context in which they flourished and developed, which was the Medieval Era. The Middle Ages is the period of European history that goes from the collapse of the Roman civilization to the beginning of the Renaissance, and it extends from about 500 to 1500 ca. (“Middle Ages”). This period is called the “Dark Ages” since it is regarded by the Renaissance scholars as a long interval of superstition, ignorance, barbarism, and social oppression due to the fact that the Medieval era was a fight to establish a new society independent from the Roman standards and philosophy. Would it not be nice if we could go back in time to experience the Renaissance for ourselves? Being able to walk down the streets of Florence, Italy and experience this time period that not only gave rebirth to old values and artistic ways of statement, but also were a period of great individualism.
