Drug and Alcohol Treatment in America has been based on the Medical Model of Treatment. According to Wikipedia, the medical model of addiction is rooted in the philosophy that addiction is a disease and has biological, neurological, genetic, and environmental sources of origin. Treatment includes potential detox with a 28 day or more stay at a residential treatment facility. The continuum of care can include an additional 28 days at the partial hospitalization level, followed by another 6 weeks of Intensive Outpatient.
With the introduction of Obamacare the insurance companies have begun to pay less and less for the revolving door of treatment services. With the average length of stay in a residential treatment center around 28 days and the bills ranging from $12,000 to $70,000, insurance companies have cut the amount that they are willing to pay for addiction services. Some insurance companies will pay for the least restrictive level of care first, even if a clinical professional requests a higher level of care.
This leaves the client and their family in a sticky situation. They can pay cash out of pocket for the treatment, wait for a mental health diagnosis so that the insurance companies will pay, or look for an alternative form of treatment that might be more effective an affordable. Sometimes the insurance company actually will refuse to pay any more benefits for the client for the year since he or she has been in and out of treatment centers so many times that
Rehabilitation and recovery from addiction involves several steps. These steps are often different depending on what treatment program the person is enrolled into. However, for nearly
The effect of addiction have consumed billions of individuals all over the world, not only consume but also killed. Individuals have relied on drugs to fill the void in their life that is missing. The addict is not only hurting themselves from the drug use but their families, friends, and their community. In this paper, it will give a description of a 21-year-old male named Anthony. Anthony started using marijuana at the age of 20, trying to hide the pain from the death of his sister. Eventually, marijuana was not enough to get Anthony the extra high he wanted which Anthony made the choice to try another drug and eventually it
Inpatient facility - Treatment may include detox, medication, supplement assessment, counseling, therapy, exercise, nutritional meals, mutual-support groups, and alternative therapies while you stay in a residential facility. Rehab stay can last up to a year, depending on the individual’s
There has been an expectation of society that substance abuse treatment should eliminate alcohol and illicit drug use while improving individual health and social functioning as to reduce the public safety threat. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 also known as Obama Care was created with intentions of expanding the availability of health insurance. In 2011 the President’s National Drug Control Strategy requested investments in screening, intervention and referral to treatment, and expanded the Access to Recovery voucher program. These initiatives are a start towards total care for alcohol and substance abuse patients, however from our study we have found that treatment may be best when considered as a long term possibly life resource for these individuals to become successfully sober and healthy.
It is true that the individual with an addiction needs more than his willpower to overcome his conditions. Fortunately, there are many friendly rehab facilities in our country that offer customized detox treatment plans to help the affected individual in overcoming his addictions.
There are various care settings wherein substance abuse therapy services are provided. This include primary care clinics, urgent care center or the hospital’s emergency department, freestanding substance abuse treatment or mental health facility, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs and acute care inpatient settings. The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) developed a clinical tool called Placement Criteria, Second edition, revised (PPC-2R), to match patients’ care needs for substance abuse detoxification and the suitable care environment. Placement determination is evaluated according to
The original residential treatment model consisted of a 3 to 6 week hospital-based inpatient treatment phase followed by extended outpatient therapy and participation in a self-help group, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
There are various influences that elicit an addiction. While we do not fully understand or know some of the causes that form an addiction, there are multiple models that have been developed over time to help alleviate some of the confusion and explain substance use disorder.
Not every addict should be treated the same. The regimen should address all of the aspects of an individual's life, including medical and mental health and follow up options. Behavioral Treatments help patients modify their attitudes and behaviors and increase healthy lifestyle skills and options. They can enhance the effectiveness of medication and help addicts stay committed to the treatment process. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a behavioral treatment with the goal of helping the user recognize, avoid, and cope with anything and everything involving their drug use and recovery (Davison, 2007). Therapeutic communities can also be extremely effective, especially for those who are severely addicted. They are highly structured programs that often involve residency for up to 12 months. It is important to recognize that no single treatment is appropriate for all individuals addicted to drugs (National, 2005).
Individualized treatment may take into account your medical history, family history, history of abuse, and whether you are seeking treatment for the first time or after relapse. Services that match your individual needs will be most effective at helping you to fight addiction. If you are married or have children, you should strongly consider a program that involves your family in the treatment process. Also, consult with your physician to figure out how long you need to spend in treatment based on the severity of your addiction. Information from the National Institute on Drug Abuse states that at least 3 months of treatment is required to have a significant impact on stopping addiction. Keep in mind, however, that better outcomes occur through longer treatment durations.
It is unclear to me from the movie how long Alice had been drinking before she received treatment, however, we do know that alcohol does affect the brain along with the body. The Surgeon General’s Report (2016) states that “Extreme patterns of use may evolve into an opioid-like use pattern in which alcohol must be available at all times to avoid the negative consequences of withdrawal” (p. 2-20). We do know that Alice had not reached such a state where she was to the point where she reached the opioid-like pattern, yet the alcohol did still affect her. As she was detoxing, it was changing her body and brain again and it will be an adjustment to learn who she is, for her family to learn who she is, and that takes time.
Over the years in the field of addiction, more therapists and agencies are seeing the value of adopting a family systems approach in therapy and beginning to appreciate the need to treat an individual within the context of the cultural, societal and family systems (Smock, Froerer, & Blakeslee, 2011). In fact, some treatment outcome studies propose that family therapy is more effective in the treatment of drug abuse especially in the areas of engagement and retention (Stantan & Shadish, 1997; Thomas & Corcoran, 2001). Some models of family and couple therapy have been specifically designed to address substance use problems, and received empirical support to be highly promising, such as the multidimensional family therapy, the behavioural couples therapy, and the family behaviour therapy (Donohue, et al., 2009; Fals-Stewart, Lam, & Kelley, 2009; Liddle, 2010). However, it seems that most agencies and addiction counsellors continue to work individually and use individual therapy models in their work with clients.
Drug treatment centers are far more abundant now than they have been in terms of effectiveness as research and studies have been conducted. In particular THE CAMP Recovery Center is a “Nationally-accredited program run by an expert staff with extensive training” and has had numerous success and recovery stories from struggling addicts that just wanted a way out, including one from a family member of mine. THE CAMP is located in Santa Cruz mountain with an offering a variety of outdoor focused activities to supplement group therapy and other recovery-related programming. The clinic offers a variety of different detoxification options depending on the addiction a person has. The Center offers detox/treatment programs for the following additions:
This essay is based on the Case study of a patient named as Mrs Ford. It will be written as a logical account, adopting a problem solving approach to her care. She is elderly and has been admitted onto a medical ward in the hospital, following a stroke. This essay analyses the care that she will receive and focuses on the use of assessment tools in practice. Interventions will be put in place directly relating to the assessment feedback and in line with best practice.
The three models of addiction examined in this week’s readings include the medical model, the psychosocial model, and the disease of the human spirit model. The medical model “rests on the assumption that disease states are the result of a biological dysfunction, possibly one on the cellular or even molecular level” (Doweiko, 2012, p. 333). Many consider this model and “maintain that much of human behavior is based on the interaction between the individual’s biological predisposition and the environment” (Doweiko, 2012, p. 333). Individuals under this model view free will “as an illusion” (Doweiko, 2012, p. 333). There is controversy regarding this model as “to the degree to which the
