Today, just about everyone depends on information and communication to keep their lives moving through daily activities. We need to be aware that the values we hold, the beliefs we harbor and the decisions we make are based on our assumptions, our experiences, our education and what we know for a fact. Mass media is relied on for the current news and facts about what is important and what we should be aware of. Media is considered a trustworthy source for news, information, education and entertainment. Though someone has to have thought behind an issue to write it.

The media is an amazing invention that can be a very good tool during times of distress. There are issues with media sometimes but overall, it can be useful in the right hands. Throughout history, the media has been used wisely to enrich the knowledge of the public and to show what can be done in order to help their fellow man.

The controversial debate regarding whether media positively or negatively influences society increases each day. Despite the ability to connect with people worldwide or to stay informed with current events, any particular media can be detrimental to human development. Society pushes ideas through the television and web that can cause some form of attachment whether it be an emotional or physical one. The rise of dependency on media results in it transforming from a leisure activity to a habitual routine.

Since there is such easy access to fast communication devices such as cell phones and the internet. The media is what comes out of such a wide popular use of the internet and television. The media has wide control over what is shown on television and also a lot of what is seen online in advertisements. The media will manipulate the way people think about things. An example could be that the media is what makes young boys and girls obsessed with reaching certain unobtainable goals of looking a certain way.

Children are also drawn to more mature programs in order to make them feel older and more mature by watching them, which is why the swearing and nudity need to be cut out. I support this view mainly because of an experience I had when I was about five years old. I snuck into the TV room without my parents knowing, and when I was flipping through the channels, I stopped on a channel that was showing the movie Die Hard. Just from watching a short segment of that movie, I quickly learned the “f” word and said it in class the next day. This initial view on censorship is significant because it can prevent children, who are the most influenced by TV, from practicing what they see. They will not learn these words or actions at an early age, like I did, and therefore will not get into trouble in school or teach them to other children. The downside to this stance is that it violates the right of freedom of speech.

The media we view helps us to understand and help shape our ideas of society. For example, after you watch a show it helps you pick out your deepest values. What you consider to be good or bad, positive or negative, moral or evil. Along with helping you pick out your morals media spectacles help you understand who has the power and who is powerless. Often, the media will dramatize the symbolism of power.
