In the United States we are currently in an environmental crisis. Our temperatures keep rising and while a lot of people are trying to make efforts to help with this, many people are still ignoring the easiest way to help the planet. The meat and dairy industry are two of the largest contributors to climate change and one of the easiest solutions for people to help with is to at least cut back on their consumption of meat and dairy. The UN has even said “A substantial reduction of impacts of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products.” (Carus, UN urges global move to meat and dairy-free diet), but this has barely made an impact even though they released this five years ago. …show more content…
1880 was when tempertures were first properly measured which is why we start gauging the temperature rise from there. Many things have contributed to the raise in temperature since 1880 such as increased fossil fuel use but a large contributor especially in recent years is the meat and dairy industry. With all of this in mind one can see why the temperature even raising one or two more degrees could create catastrophic results. When you break it down its easy to see how much of an impact the meat and dairy industry has on the planet. Animal agriculture contributes between 18 and 51% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Another impact the meat and dairy industry has is consuming 60 and 70% of grain crops grown and agriculture is responsible for 93% of water depletion worldwide. The meat and dairy industry is also responsible for a lot of soil destruction on our planet, this takes a long time to repair and if we don’t give it time to repair we won’t be able to grow food and other plants won’t be able to thrive. These are concerning numbers and the meat and dairy industry is predicted to double or triple by 2050. The year 2050 is important because the UN has reported that we need to keep the temperature from rising 2° by that year. Unfortunately, we’ve already gone up 0.8° and at the rate were going it is expected that it raises another 1.5°. Tt.is could mean terrible things for our planet and for us. We have made great moves with
Introduction (Attention Step): What do you think is the greatest cause of emission pollution? What do you believe is harming our planet? Well if you guessed that fossil fuel emissions are the biggest emission polluters, then you are completely wrong (attention getter). Animal Agriculture is actually the number one Greenhouse Gas emitter in the planet. Yes, cow farts are destroying the environment. It sounds crazy, but ever since the mid 60’s, agriculture associations have been spreading across the Americas and dominated the industry. The most destructive of all Ag corps are Livestock Corporation. These associations include IBP, Conagra, Perdue, Farmland National Beef, Cargill, etc … Animal Agriculture is effecting every single person in this room because we all breathe in the same air, drink the same water, and eat the same (credibility). The buildup of Animal Agriculture is a great destruction to our planet and our species because it is creating
I am writing to submit my application for the open Office Assistant position at Fort Belvoir Elemantary School. I am seeking a new job opportunity because I am trying to start career change into Educational field. When I reviewed the requirements for your opportunity, I became very interested because my skills and industry experience are aligned closely to them.
Consuming less meat helped me lose weight, gain a livelier complexion, and decrease my risk of heart disease since it runs in my family. Therefore, focusing on the individual as the source of environmentally beneficial social change is more useful because a large organization misuses power to get ahead monetarily, instead of profiting from environmental actions. The individual not only values their treatment of power, but utilizes it to point out environmental concerns such as obesity. So, by starting to eliminate all processed meats to eventually put an end to all red meat would reduce obesity and construct a healthier society that will encourage change. In order to turn the reduction of red meat consumption feasible over the long term, all individuals must gain the knowledge to make the choice to have a healthier lifestyle by recognizing that eating less meat will put both the environment and their bodies in good
Have you ever thought about what will happen if the beef production goes downhill and we are left with no beef to get proper protein? Many people are unaware of the occurrences happening to earth due to climate change. There are tons of issues that go unseen throughout the day on Earth that could be stopped or decreased. Some of these issues involve pollution, littering, negativity, and more. Not everyone lives in an area of the world that they can see the agricultural side every day. The people that can see the agricultural side every day, know that there are many ways that climate change can have an impact on livestock, especially cattle. There are other objects that can be impacted through climate change, cattle are just one of them. Climate
The raising of cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and more are the reason for most of the destruction of the environment on the planet. Over all farm land covers about 38% of the worlds land area. So humans can continue to eat meat millions of animals and insects are losing their homes and even going extinct so more farm
These situations uniquely affect each person’s human behavior, and their different reactions in various environments. Readers can gain improved understanding of economic and behavioral microanalysis, and why laws and actions sometimes bring unintended consequences. The authors’ thinking and ability to approach our complex world is the way of the future. The book mentioned how we can help global warming is by cutting back on meat portions or just by eating one meal a day. Reducing the world’s never ending and increasing appetite for meat is essential to avoid devastating climate change. Preventing global warming is reliant on tackling meat and dairy usage. Having an imbalanced diet that include low in fruits and vegetables and high in red and processed meat is responsible for the health burden globally. A poor food system is responsible for major climate change. By linking health and climate change in our eating habits may have more effect than focusing on each issues. Getting the government involved could help improve food education to encourage a healthy eating lifestyle habits and environmental
Imagine running in lush green grass, surrounded by the sounds of animals like you playing, grazing and exploring their paradise. Imagine bright red barns, and being fed and getting pampered every day. Imagine taking a bite of a juicy burger, and breathing in the clean fresh air of nature. Now imagine a small confined space with fences and millions of others like you placed in one area, with barely any space to move. Imagine contaminated water, biting into a poor quality, hormone infested burger. Lastly imagine breathing in harmful emissions. This is the behind the scenes of our meat industry. Although factory farming provides inexpensive meat, Job opportunities and lucrative, efficient produce, its negative consequences to animals, global warming
These are two extremes, but people who live in the developed world on average still eat twice as much meat compared to people living in developing countries. And while people in developing countries might consume less meat and dairy now, growing populations and wealth will strongly increase their consumption. This will have negative impacts on the environment - and on ourselves. More than 25% of climate gases that contribute to climate change are associated with our food. This is also expected to increase over the next decades. But our diets are not only unsustainable, they are also unhealthy leading to malnourishment and obesity.
Animal agriculture is full of multiple components that overall affect the Earth’s health including the health of the population that makes up the Earth. The practice of breeding livestock has become readily responsible for the changes in the Earth regarding climate and pollution. The Animal Agriculture Alliance has promoted the interest for the largest corporation and trade association for livestock, antibiotics, and genetically modified organisms (Modern Animal Agriculture Methods Are Efficient, Highly Productive, and Sustainable). In other words, this corporation is profiting from this field while the Earth is going through exposure of dangerous weather conditions, predators, and disease; all resulting in carbon emissions. Furthermore, Canada’s
Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. As human population grows, so does food consumption and the problem is obvious. How do we feed the world without destroying it? There are many solutions such as; drip irrigation, precision agriculture, greywater recycling, and so much more. The problem is that for these to make any sort of impact on our current situation we would need an immediate change and complete participation. By getting rid of animal agriculture we would see improvements in water conservation, world hunger, and climate change. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, water pollution, and habitat destruction and that is why smarter diets would be not only be the best solution for our problem, but also the most effective
Chances are, you’ve consumed meat, dairy, or eggs at some point in you life, but have you ever stopped to think about the effects the animal agriculture industry has on our planet? The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has gathered that from a local to global scale, the livestock sector emerges every year as one of the top 2-3 most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems. From air, to climate change, to land & soil, to biodiversity, the animal agriculture industry has an impact on virtually all aspects of the environment. Evidence has shown that the production of livestock releases substances that contribute to climate change and air pollution at nearly every step of the process. When compared
It also needs to be pointed out that meat production industry is highly unfriendly to the environment. It has been proved that the results of this mindless actions are extremely harmful to the whole planet: trees are lost in creating farms for animal food, land is taken away from wildlife, additional erosion is caused, topsoil is lost, groundwater is wasted, and pesticide is excessively used. In fact, one chicken farm uses as much water as a little city. Few may know that this industry, compared to others, causes the biggest pollution at all.
In addition to the mentioned reports above, it is also worth noting several recent news articles as a reference for the zero mention about the meat industry or the livestock sector at the recent COP21 in Paris. Based on an observation by Mia MacDonald, the Executive Director of Brighter Green and the Chair of Green Belt Movement International, the Paris agreement largely omitted a crucial element, i.e. “what the world eats and how it produces its food are central factors in addressing climate change. Even though the food menu at the Paris Climate Conference was screaming livestock emissions in the form of butter, cheese and meat – yet, they were nowhere to be found on the agenda. As noted by Professor Tim Benton, failure to tackle food demand could make the 1.5°C goal unachievable. He also, was aware that one of the sectors that was largely absent from the talks in Paris that has been continuingly neglected, is food.
With the rise of earth’s temperature and overall climate, comes devastating consequences to not only animals and the planet, but also humans. The elephant in the room about climate change is with the regards of the meat and dairy industry’s contribution. These two concepts are linked together through the repercussions of animal agriculture, and greenhouse gas emissions.
Have you ever wanted to conserve natural resources such as water? You possibly looked into ways to do so online and clicked on what was shown as a government authorized conservation website. These websites may have recomended to use less water or take shorter showers.Maybe told you that you should think about not driving a car to work everyday to reduce pollution.Yet these “government authorized” websites refuse to shine a light on the main cause of growth to our ecological footprint, animal agriculture.Fossil fuels are not the leading contender for use of greenhouse gas emissions as you might think. Animal agriculture is.Animal agriculture is intensive animal farming or the industrial livestock production, which has been proven to be the leading cause of environmental impact. It is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, habitat destruction, and water pollution.Animal agriculture should not have such a huge impact on the environment.Considering the amount of resources used or destroyed, such as water, the impact of the release of methane and other gases into the atmosphere, and the rate of deforestation to make agricultural farms, these farms should not be causing the environment this much harm.
