In 1860 when “the McGavock and Mt. Vernon Horse Railroad Company and the South Nashville Street Railroad Company were chartered and used steam and mules to power rail cars to give Nashville its first taste of public transportation. On April 30, 1889, the McGavock and Mt. Vernon Horse Railroad Company operated the first electric streetcar in Nashville, and the city became one of the first in the nation to have such "modern" transportation.” (History of Transit in Nashville)
Transportation in the region has a long and successful past. However, public transportation has consistently taken a back seat to the personal automobile. There has been a strong core of persons who rely on public transportation to achieve mobility, and governmental

nMotion is a controversial plan to invest more than $6B over the next 25 years in the public transportation infrastructure. The plan includes steps to simplify the system, develop BRT lines, build rail lines, and regionalize service to enhance efficiency. Many region leaders agree that the community must move in this direction, but unfortunately it is controversial due to the fact that public support for such an investment is not strong.
While that is the future and where the agency is going, today the Nashville MTA operates on a budget of just $73.6M. For a region of this size and population, the budget facilitates only a basic-level of service to the community. Current initiatives to enhance mobility options through the MTA/RTA remain dependent upon new revenue sources, increasing the need to adopt a dedicated transit tax.
The current mission statement for the agency is: “The Nashville MTA provides public transportation services, local and express routes to citizens and visitors within the Metropolitan Nashville area. The Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority mission statement is to provide safe, reliable, efficient, customer friendly public transit and alternatives to driving alone. The goal of the Nashville MTA is to balance customer needs with taxpayer resources in a manner
The Birmingham Mineral Railroad(L & N Railroad) opened in 1884 on Red Mountain. The primary purpose of the rail is to connect the mineral rich land of red mountain to the furnaces in Birmingham. The Mineral Rail Line connected to the main branch of the L & N Railroad at Grace’s gap. Grace’s Gap was located between Birmingham and Oxmoor. This was a great economic achievement for Birmingham, resulting in rapid transportation of minerals to the
The Hudson River Railroad attracted Cornelius Vanderbilt because it was clear that the railroads was the smart money and this industry is what made Vanderbilt one of the most wealthiest man in the late 1800s. In fact, Vanderbilt anxious to control the Railroads between New York City and Albany lead to the acquisition of the Harlem Railroad and gain control of the New York Central. Therefore, in 1864 Vanderbilt became the new owner of the Hudson River Railroad. The author of this article wrote that it is important for the citizens of Detroit to vote for a public rail and bus transit system. Puentes states that there are a myriad amount of jobs but there is also no way to get to them. Although there are many buses, trains and routes in Detroit, there are no connecting routes from one region to another or to the city itself. This makes it harder for people to get to their jobs in less than an hour. Something else the author mentions is that most of the families in Detroit receive low income, so they cannot pay for all the buses needed in order to go to work.
Moreover, public transportation is mainly common in means of transportation in and out of NYC due to the convenience, cost, and efficiency of public transportation. It has become more easily accessible due to having subways in nearly every other block, which is cheaper and faster. Public transportation is faster than driving into the city at times since it escapes the traffic on roads since it is underneath. Public transportation contains buses, trains, and light rails as well. Once again, automobile and the city of tomorrow can coexist, but it is not ideal in today’s

Throughout the 1800’s, methods of transportation were limited; people either used horses or rode on the train. Most people lived in town near their work. With the introduction of the automobile, society evolved and soon transformed to fit the need of people’s transportation. Many of those needs caused by automobile invention included society, economy and finally, politics.
Since the beginning of recorded history, mankind has been caught in the middle of being

The Metropolitan city of Nashville, Tennessee, for example, had many independent sedan and limo services competing with the established taxi and expensive limo companies, which, in turn, formed the Tennessee Livery Association, crafting assorted regulations and propelling them through the court system into law (IJ). Ali Bokhari is the proprietor of Metro Livery, one of the largest sedan and limo services established in Nashville and one of the several independent transportation businesses restricted by the unreasonable regulations of the county. These regulations required all non-established transit companies to charge a minimum of $45 for any length of ride, understandably driving most all customers back to the large corporation taxi and limo services. As stated by senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, Jeff Rowes (2015), “Most of the rules that exist in the transportation industry are designed to protect existing transportation companies from competition.” (as cited in Stossel LYFT, 2015, 4:45). Instead of creating these regulations in an honest effort to protect the public’s health and safety, the bureaucratic system opted to favor the politically powerful companies with
Nashville’s transportation consists of a light rail and MTA bus line. The MTA bus line services both Nashville and Davidson County. Additionally, the MTA offers an Access ride program for individuals with disabilities. This service provides elderly individuals with a means to get around the city of Nashville. Similarly, riders with mental and physical disabilities receive discounted tickets. Another mode of getting around the Nashville area is by a commuter train. The Music City Star began operating on September 18. 2006. The Star was the first passenger train after the suspension of the Amtrak’s Floridian in 1979. Initially, the rail system failed to accumulate enough passengers. Currently, there has been an increase in the number of riders each year. As of 2016, there had been more than 269,000 riders. Although, the Music City Star continues to generate revenue, the mayor has plans to
Trains are everywhere in our society, we have jokes, toys, movies, and children’s television shows, but did you know rail transport started in 6th century Greece? The city of San Antonio, Texas is a fast-growing metropolitan city that has a very tremendous amount of people. It has been estimated that the city will grow by another million people in the next ten to twenty years. San Antonio’s traffic is becoming a huge issue and is quickly approaching to be one of the most congested areas in the states. The public transport in San Antonio consists of a very complex bus system, taxicabs, Trolley’s downtown, and the growing market of ridesharing drivers. San Antonio has had many talks and negotiations throughout the last two decades on getting a Light Rail system constructed to help with public transportation. This proposal is for specific businesses, the city of San Antonio and Bexar County to come to a funding agreement.
> Mass rapid transit system (MRTS)-new railway route from Tiruvanmiyur to Mamallapuram and extending it upto puducherry in next phase and MRTS in corporations like Madurai , Tiruchi , Tanjavur ,Salem , Erode .
Transportation investment increased significantly with highway systems created during the 1940’s and the impressive interstate system program of the 1950’s. Massively subsidized by the federal government, these surface initiatives connected States from coast-to-coast, but concurrently made suburban living feasible, while eroding inner-city investment (Shoup & Lang, 2011). Later, when the streetcar, rail, and bus systems within cities began to falter and fade, President Kennedy suggested federal investment in urban transportation. However, it wasn’t until President Johnson signed the Urban Mass Transportation Act of 1964 that government funding for mass transit and the Urban Mass Transportation Administration were established (Federal Transit Administration [FTA], n.d.).
Unless someone watches the news and keeps up with government spending, there is a chance they are not knowledgeable of three recent proposals made by Mayor Megan Barry. These two extreme expenditures are on their way to become reality. One of them being a new transit referendum in order to reduce pollution and rush hours for commuters. The second one is an MLS expansion which would bring a professional men's soccer team to Nashville along with a pricey stadium. Finally the third being, a one point two billion dollar airport renovation. Mayor Barry’s transit proposal would cost nearly five point two billion dollars to completely revamp commuting to in and out of Nashville. Furthermore, the MLS expansion stadium would cost nearly two hundred
Absence of effective mass rapid transport system and intra-city railway networks has resulted in people using their own vehicles for commuting to workplace. This has resulted in uncontrolled growth of vehicles.
