Imagine being trapped in a maze, surrounded by 60 teenage boys who cannot remember a single thing about their life back home. This is the exact situation that Thomas finds himself in. Most of the boys hate him or do not trust him, and some even want to kill him. However, there is one thing all the boys have in common: they know that they have to get out. “The Maze Runner”, by James Dashner, is a compelling novel about a group of boys who find themselves trapped inside a maze. Thomas and the boys learn to work together to escape the maze and find the people who put them there. “The Maze Runner” not only contains many hidden meanings, but in addition, can teach many important lessons about life. The main subject or theme is a lesson that many people can learn from and apply to their lives: “you can not do things on your own”. From the second Thomas enters the Glade, a boy named Gally completely hates him. Up until the time of his death, Gally tries his hardest to convince the other boys that Thomas is up to no good and that he is part of the reason why they are in the Glade. Thomas alienates himself, feeling that no one trusts him. Readers feel sympathetic for Thomas because, having no recollection of his life before the Glade, there is no way that he can defend himself against the acquisitions that are being fired at him. Waking up not knowing anything or anyone is one of the scariest thoughts a human brain can conjure up, but what if this turned out to be a reality for you? How terrified would someone feel? Then you find out you were taken by a mysterious force along with about fifty to sixty other people. Well this turned out to be a reality for Thomas in the book The Maze Runner, by James Dashner. In this book, Thomas faces the challenges of trying to fit in with the other boys, faces the challenge of trying to follow the rules, and faces the urge to become a maze runner. All of these reasons show how Thomas is an outcast archetype.

Many of these teens are so scared of being different and wanting to know more because of the fear of what may happen to them. Many teens also died trying to explore the maze, which brought upon a fear of death to the others in the maze. Lastly, many of the characters in The Maze Runner lack the hope and confidence to move forward because the government has created serious consequences for challenging their circumstances. Characters such as Minho and Alby have the leadership, but do not use it because they are afraid of what may happen. Like many novels in the young adult genre, The Maze Runner by James Dasher can be interpreted as a metaphor of the challenges of growing up. Throughout the novel, many undercover metaphors are revealed. A metaphor for birth, the boys are brought to The Glade with no memories, life in The Glade later becomes comforting like an ideal childhood. Unlike the peacefulness of The Glade, the maze becomes a period of adolescence. Over time though, he begins to accept where he is (the Glade) and that the people in the Glade have nothing but each other. Thomas also adapts to the Glade’s slang, and talks like a Glader. He also saves the lives of some Gladers who are his friends, such as Alby. At the end Thomas became a sort of leader, trying to make the best decisions when the rest of the Gladers didn’t know what to do. Thomas is the narrator and protagonist of the story. He arrives in the maze with no knowledge of who he is or was. He only remembers his name and nothing else about his life. Thomas proves to be brave and clever even though he only has a very limited memory of previous knowledge of the Maze. Since arriving in the maze, Thomas makes both friends and enemies and proves to be a leader among the other boys with him in the maze.

The book along with amazing imagery and relevance to today’s world manages to attract more than just teenagers but anybody that is up for the challenge of the maze, and that is just the purpose of this paper to demonstrate multiple reason of why this book not only deserves to be read but it should hold a place in the literary canon.
The Maze Runner, written by James Dashner is the first book in the Maze Runner pentalogy. The story follows the adventures of a sixteen-year-old boy named Thomas, who finds himself waking up in the heart of a labyrinth, titled ‘The Glade’. As it turns out there are many teenage boys accompanying Thomas. The aim is to escape from the labyrinth, but this does not go as effortlessly as it sounds, due to the fact that the labyrinth is constructed by the inexplicable and threatening WICKED (World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department). At nightfall, the walls of the labyrinth move and barricade the four entrances of the labyrinth. The walls prevent the boys from being attacked by creatures called grievers, who walk around the labyrinth every night. Survival intuition, faith and friendship are some of the themes portrayed in the book. In the film adaptation of The Maze Runner, there are three highly visible differences in comparison to the book. In the first place, Dashner delightfully depicts the thought processes of the protagonist in the book, whilst in the film this is not portrayed at all. Secondly, the time frame of the film is diminished, which makes the story less plausible. Lastly, the strong characters Dashner developed for the books are nullified in the film adaptation.
