he Maze Runner, James Dashner, Mikayla Ector
Thomas began his life standing up, he woke up in a elevator with memory loss of this past except what his name was, Thomas. He enters the Glade, and the first people he see are some teenage boys, confused. Thomas’s first goal was to figure out where he was, and who he was, how he got there, and what was the point of the maze. When Thomas got to the “Glade”, he hated it and everybody there. As he became more comfortable his goal became to be a maze runner, so he can figure out the maze. A girl he became close to, Teresa, also known as “the girl”, slipped into a comma, and his goal being to wake her up, because she had answers to escaping the maze.
Gally, being the Antagonist, has bullied, and picked on Thomas since his first day being at the “Glade”. Gally has never liked Thomas, since the start, Gally will do anything to limit Thomas’s power. Towards the end Gally tried to kill Thomas with Knives, but kills another character, Chuck, instead. Gally is the only one who has seen the world outside of the Glade. He hates Thomas because he doesn't want

There are boys that come out of that elevator once a week, and always boys. But, a day later unexpectedly another person comes out of the elevator and it ends up being the first girl ever to be there. The rising action of this book, is when Thomas, Alby, and Minho, get trapped in the maze, surrounded by Grievers. The climax is occurs when the Gladers battle the Grievers. They had to fight this battle to escape. The falling action is where the kids go where the creators “WICKED” live. They see a few adults, and Gally, Gally soon began to throw a knife at Thomas, but Chuck, one of Thomas best friends jumps in front of him and gets stabbed for him. The resolution is when Chuck died, the military came and killed all the creators of the maze, and took all the kids to
Nothing, which happens to any character, does so without a reason. Actions have consequences in this book, and apparently, good people strive almost to the end (Lerner 23).Gally, for instance, takes the rivalry with Thomas to a different level, and kills Chuck in the process. Consequently, Thomas beats him almost to death and it is a proof that simple and unwanted enmity will serve a person no good. Also, it is from this book that readers learn about the struggle for survival and persistence in suffering. In the later stages of the story, Thomas, Chuck and Teresa are the only survivors from the maze with all other boys killed. The rewards are equally remarkable since it has been a test to determine the most intelligent boys capable of saving humanity by defeating the Flare.
Since they were so against facing the Gievers or exploring the maze more in depth, it took them 2 years to figure out the code and finally escape. It's never revealed why WICKED put Thomas and Teresa in the maze, but my theory is that the other Gladers were taking too long to escape so they put them in to help them out. Therefore, Thomas' position in the glade was created because of fear, the fear of the Grievers the Gladers had, and WICKED's fear that they'll take too long. Another demonstration of fear playing a big role in the story is Chuck's shocking sacrifice. After the Gladers escape the maze and enter this laboratory, they come across a deranged Gally.
Thomas wakes up in a metal box that rises him up from the underground to the land above known as the Glade. He has no memory of anything, anyone, or even where he is. The only thing he remembers is his name. Thomas, once discovering where he is and who these boys are around him he comes to the realization of who is in charge of the place. It is led by two of the elder boys; Alby, the leader, and Newt, the second-in-charge. Every week the box in the middle of the glade surfaces from beneath the ground to supply the boys with new food, tools and weapons. But every month a new boy with no memory arrives in the metal box. Outside of their cozy glade surrounded by the wall is a maze, a labyrinth filled with mile high concrete walls that change every
In his first few days in the glade, Thomas wanted to be a runner as he felt that he was meant to be a runner and he felt like he knew the maze. Minhoe and Alby went into the maze to look at a dead grevier but Alby got stung and Minhoe was struggling to bring him back into the glade and right when the maze was about to close for the night Thomas ran into the maze because he wanted to help Minhoe and Alby survive. After about a week or two of Thomas living in the glade, Thomas started to respect his elders more, doing what they asked. After Thomas went through the changing, he told the keepers everything that he remembered from the changing so that they could try and find out how to get out of the maze. Part of Thomas' plan was for him to get taken by the grievers while the rest of the Gladers went into the griever hole to try and find something that they could put the code into it to open a door to get out.
When I was reading the Maze Runner I made some connections. When Thomas went out into the maze, why would he do
"Thomas leaned back against the rough rock, overcome by disbelief at what he had just done. Filled with terror at what the consequences might be." (Dashner). He ran outside the Glades knowing he only had seconds to come back in until the thick, humongous walls closed shut for the night sealing the three Gladers outside. What is worse is this is at night, one extremely tired, one with an injured arm, and Thomas, an inexperienced Glader. They have no idea what they were going to expect. Thomas might have not know it, but he's crossing his very first threshold in the story.
Dashner’s book is so much more enjoyable because of his skills in theme. Dashner’s constant restating of his theme, friendship and family beyond blood greatly improve the quality and enjoyment of the book. Throughout the story we see how, despite the lack of blood related family, the boys of The Maze Runner, join together and treat one another as you would family. In the beginning of the story, when Thomas first arrives in the Glade, the current “Gladers”, or the residents of the Glade, welcome Thomas and help him out of the box he arrived in; “The helping hands didn’t stop swarming around him until Thomas stood up straight and had the dust brushed from his shirt and pants.”(page 5). This quote proves that even when they don’t know Thomas they treat him as a friend and help him out of the box. Also in this quote, “Thomas stared at him, stared at his friend’s lifeless body”(page 357) Chuck, a good friend of Thomas, has just died and this is how Thomas reacts. Thomas met Chuck on his first day in the
Thomas enters the Glade the same way a baby is welcomed into the world. They come out with no memories of the womb and they do not know anything, not even their name. Therefore, they are confused, like Thomas and just want to cry. Slowly, however, they are taught things until they can function on their own. This helps show that one of the symbols in The Maze Runner is the maze itself, as it symbolizes life and how complex it is. As life does not follow one rule but instead has many obstacles and Unforeseen events which is like the twists and turns in the maze. In life there are the nice straight paths these are when nothing is wrong and life seems easy. Then there are times where there are twists and turns, this is when in your life a hard
However, even though he is a newbie, Thomas pursues answers about the glade and queries more than the other gladers ever did know about their surrounding. At first, anyone would somewhat pity Thomas because he felt lonely, sad and desperate. The other boys were harsh towards him and the new environment, language and the laws he was not aware of were almost disorienting. Yet, as time passes by, Thomas ponders on more question, although the boys have already told him how the glade runs. For Thomas, too much information is never enough. There is one point in the story where he feels connected with the maze, so never being satisfied with answers he asks, “Oh, you say that to stay out in the Maze overnight is a certain death sentence? Lemme give that a try."(100) During this scene he yet again attempts to be independent yet also
In the beginning, the main character, Thomas, has his memory wiped so he doesn’t know anything. Over time though, he begins to accept where he is (the Glade) and that the people in the Glade have nothing but each other. Thomas also adapts to the Glade’s slang, and talks like a Glader. He also saves the lives of some Gladers who are his friends, such as Alby. At the end Thomas became a sort of leader, trying to make the best decisions when the rest of the Gladers didn’t know what to do. Thomas talks to the other Gladers like someone would talk to their friends or family, and Thomas does his best to help protect the Gladers. Thomas is hard and cold to the people from WICKED, as at the end one of their workers kills Chuck, one of Thomas’s
Her name is Teresa. Teresa tells everyone that everything is about to change, then succumbs to a coma. Thomas feels a connection to her, but can’t figure out where he knows her from. Thomas then decides that he wants to be a Runner, Gladers who go out into the Maze in an attempt to map it and find a way out. While exploring the Maze, Alby is stung by a Griever. Minho, the leader of runners, attempts to get him back into the Glade before the walls close but they are not going to make it. Thomas sees them, then races out to help and becomes trapped outside in the Maze with them. The Maze is most dangerous at night because that is when the Grivers are most active. Despite being the most experienced, Minho panics and runs away leaving Thomas and Alby. Through wits and skill, Thomas manages to save himself with alby, and survive the night in the Maze. That made Thomas a hero and from that, Minho convinces the other Gladers to allow Thomas to become a Runner trainee. Thomas then begins training under Minho. He learns how the Runners map the Maze, looking for patterns to the maze every day. Thomas also visits Teresa who is still comatose. She begins to communicate with him telepathically and tells Thomas that she has triggered the end. The next day the sun has disappeared from the sky, replaced with a dull gray sky. Thomas realizes that the Glade is a fabricated place and that the sky was never real. Teresa tells
Although this leaves Thomas feeling oddly exhilarated, while he's lying in his sleeping bag in a meadow near the gardens, he returns to feeling sad and curious. Thomas tells Chuck that he wants to become one of the Runners, even though he still doesn't really know what they do. Chuck just laughs and says whatever because being a runner is one of the hardest jobs in the glade.
The Maze Runner, written by James Dashner is the first book in the Maze Runner pentalogy. The story follows the adventures of a sixteen-year-old boy named Thomas, who finds himself waking up in the heart of a labyrinth, titled ‘The Glade’. As it turns out there are many teenage boys accompanying Thomas. The aim is to escape from the labyrinth, but this does not go as effortlessly as it sounds, due to the fact that the labyrinth is constructed by the inexplicable and threatening WICKED (World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department). At nightfall, the walls of the labyrinth move and barricade the four entrances of the labyrinth. The walls prevent the boys from being attacked by creatures called grievers, who walk around the labyrinth every night. Survival intuition, faith and friendship are some of the themes portrayed in the book. In the film adaptation of The Maze Runner, there are three highly visible differences in comparison to the book. In the first place, Dashner delightfully depicts the thought processes of the protagonist in the book, whilst in the film this is not portrayed at all. Secondly, the time frame of the film is diminished, which makes the story less plausible. Lastly, the strong characters Dashner developed for the books are nullified in the film adaptation. Therefore,
Thomas is a runner, but before he trains he has to be put in the jail. He did break the rule. The climax is when Teresa wakes up from her coma. The sky turns grey, there’s no sun, and the box doesn’t bring them their daily supplies. Now everything is dying.
The Maze Runner by James Dashner is 374 pages and is a science fiction novel. The story takes place in a strange place surrounded by massive thick ivy covered walls. The outside of these walls is a detrimental maze. The people in between the walls are called Gladers. They have been memory wiped and sent to a mysterious place called the Glade. The main characters that take place at the Glade are Thomas, Theresa, Gally, Alby, Minho, Chuck, and Newt. When arriving at the Glade everyone quickly shares one common goal. Their goal is to figure out the maze and get out of there. The conflict in the story is Thomas and Theresa have all the tools to free them, but the other Gladers are accusing them of all the change brought
