The Maze Runner is all about a teenager named Thomas who arrives at a glade with a bunch of other people like Alby, Newt, Gally, Minho, Chuck, etc. Thomas has no memory of what happened before he arrives at the glade just like the others who did before Thomas. There is a Maze in the glade that is known to get the people out of the glade. There are runners who explore the maze, the people that were at the glade are Minho, Ben and some other people who weren’t mentioned in the story. The story or the theme mainly focuses on the people’s relationships and friendships throughout the story as they explore the Maze to find there way out.
The characters in The Maze Runner are important and on the other hand plot progression is important too. The actions

In the movie the introduction of the character was quick. In the book Alby was introduced himself to Thomas first. “black T-shirt, jeans, tennis shoes, a digital watch. For some reason the clothing here surprised Thomas; it seemed like everyone should be wearing something more menacing—like prison garb. The dark-skinned boy had short-cropped hair, his face clean shaven. But other than the permanent scowl, there was nothing scary about him at all.” (Chapter 2 pg 4). Then Newt, “he seemed a lot nicer than Alby. Newt was taller than Alby too but looked to be a year or so younger. His hair was blond and cut long, cascading over his Tshirt. Veins stuck out of his muscled arms” (Chapter 2 pg 5) One thing I noticed is that everyone calls Thomas Greenie at the beginning of the book and movie. Afterward, Chuck and Gally are introduced. Thomas and Chuck become really good friends later on in the story and you can tell from the plot. I had many thoughts on the characters throughout the book and movie. Later on, Minho is introduced which is important because Minho and Alby are part of the reason why Thomas becomes a Maze Runner. “How stupid is this—he saves Alby’s life, kills a couple of Grievers, and we’re sitting here yappin’ about what to do with him. As Chuck would say, this is a pile of klunk.” (Pg 88 chapter 24). This quote …show more content…
“Nothin’ I say’ll do you any good,” he said. “I’m basically still a Newbie, too. But I can be your friend—” “I don’t need friends,” Thomas interrupted” (Chapter 3 pg 12). This expresses that Thomas first didn’t want to be Chuck’s friend but later on in the story, their relation gets deeper as Thomas gets more serious. “Don’t give up, Chuck. We’re gonna solve this thing, get out of here. I’m a Runner now—I promise on my life I’ll get you back to that room of yours. Make your mom quit crying.” And Thomas meant it. He felt it burn in his heart.” (Chapter 30 pg 111). This scenery is important when it comes to the theme becomes this scene is basically narrating friendship. Thomas promises that he will get Chuck out of the Maze to his parents. Around the end of the movie when it’s at the climate scene when Gally threatens to kill someone with a dagger and it was Thomas. “The blade windmilled, its every turn visible to Thomas as if the world had turned to slow motion. As if it did so for the sole purpose of allowing him to feel the terror of seeing such a thing. On the knife came, flipping over and over, straight at him. A strangled cry was forming in his throat; he urged himself to move but he couldn’t. Then, inexplicably, Chuck was there, diving in front of him. Thomas felt as if his feet had been frozen in blocks of ice; he could only stare at the scene of horror unfolding before him, completely helpless. With a sickening, wet thunk, the dagger slammed into
In the end Thomas helped an old friend to Phoenix, Arizona even though they had not spoken for years before. That could the ultimate whammy on Thomas’s caring
Very brave.” The quote shown demonstrates how there’s a traditional feel with Thomas’ story, with a hint of modernization. Lastly, Thomas’ compassion is shown after he and Victor have finished searching Victor’s dad’s trailer. Thomas states that he only “came because of your father” Thomas is portraying his feelings and thoughts when he says this, revealing how he cared for Victor’s father. Thomas still felt attached to Victor’s father, and in turn Victor saw how much Thomas truly cared.
Jackie plays a pivotal role in helping Thomas through this gruelling challenge by helping him understand that Charlie’s actions are not intentional and that he would always behave in ways that are considered abnormal. Jackie goes beyond providing simple moral support by taking care of Charlie and standing up against those who try to bully him. She
Thomas expresses that he is compassionate and still holds emotions towards a friend because he gives Victor an offer saying “I can lend you the money.. But you have to take me with you”. Victor responds with “I can't your money i haven't talked to you in years”. Although they haven't communicated in years thomas is willing
The Maze Runner is about a boy named Thomas who is trying to survive the maze. In the beginning he wakes up in a cage knowing nothing but his name. He is then pulled out of the cage by the gladers, who live in the glade. After about a day he is able to meet the leader Alby. A little bit after that Alby and Minho are trying to get back into the maze as it is closing. Alby was stung by a griever and Minho was trying to get back into the glade. Thomas seeing that Alby was hurt went to go and save him. The three were then trapped in the maze. Thomas saved Alby from the night by hiding him. Thomas was being chased by grievers almost the whole night. Thomas then wants to become a runner. Minho agrees with it but Gally another member of the glade
In the beginning, the main character, Thomas, has his memory wiped so he doesn’t know anything. Over time though, he begins to accept where he is (the Glade) and that the people in the Glade have nothing but each other. Thomas also adapts to the Glade’s slang, and talks like a Glader. He also saves the lives of some Gladers who are his friends, such as Alby. At the end Thomas became a sort of leader, trying to make the best decisions when the rest of the Gladers didn’t know what to do. Thomas talks to the other Gladers like someone would talk to their friends or family, and Thomas does his best to help protect the Gladers. Thomas is hard and cold to the people from WICKED, as at the end one of their workers kills Chuck, one of Thomas’s
This sets a fire in Tom’s stomach as he was enjoying them and cheers them on. I believe this brought up the past which reminded Tom of his Aunt belittling him. This scene is what turns Tom into a plotting murderer. His plot to take over Dickie’s life is almost unsettling. The way Tom feels on the train with his “…affection, of impatience and frustration was swelling in him.
In the beginning of The Maze Runner, by James Dashner, a 16-year-old named Thomas wakes up in a box, and all he can remember is his name. When the doors open, he sees a large group of teenage boys who also have no memory of their past or where they came from. They all live in a place called the Glade, which is run by two boys called Alby and Newt. They maintain peace by keeping everyone busy and having a strict set of rules. The smartest and strongest boys work as Runners, running through the maze every day, looking for a way out. The Glade is bordered by tall walls that make up a maze containing strange, horrifying creatures called Grievers.
Although this leaves Thomas feeling oddly exhilarated, while he's lying in his sleeping bag in a meadow near the gardens, he returns to feeling sad and curious. Thomas tells Chuck that he wants to become one of the Runners, even though he still doesn't really know what they do. Chuck just laughs and says whatever because being a runner is one of the hardest jobs in the glade.
The model he photographed earlier that day, Veruschka von Lehndorff, sends Thomas’ reality into question by implying that they are no longer in London but actually in Paris. Thomas continues discussing the corpse in the park with Ron, who is clearly disinterested, but after some time Ron finally asks Thomas what is was he saw in the park to which he replies “nothing.” By his reply to what he saw leaves room for the audience to question if there really was nothing. Ron signals Thomas to speak with him in a back room, giving the initial impression that the two may come to a conclusion about the body, but the next time we see Thomas, we are unsure of the events from the previous
The title The Death Cure, seems almost oxymoronic, falsely true. From the first book, The Maze Runner, it seems like WICKED is desperately searching for a cure that could possibly prevent the extinction of the human race from the Flare. Mainly, The Death Cure is focusing on the cure to the disease. But as we read on, it seems like there was never a cure, but death. The cure looks like it could be letting everyone who has been infected, die while the immunes get to start over. WICKED should have been searching for a way to stop the spread of the disease instead of finding a cure for death, which has been their main problem.
Thomas finally explains to Victor that his stories “They are all I have, all I can do” (Alexie, 214) which Victor seems to begin to understand despite the fact that “Thomas would remain the crazy storyteller who talked to dogs and cars, who listened to the wind and pine trees”(Alexie, 214) while also being aware that “he couldn’t really be friends with Thomas even after all that happened”(Alexie, 214). Despite the boundaries that seem to separate them Thomas asks for just one request from Victor in return for his money and time and that is to “Just one time when I’m telling a story somewhere, why don’t you stop and listen?” (Alexie, 215). Victor agrees and as a gift to Thomas he gives half the ashes of his father to Thomas that they agree will be tossed into Spokane Falls and “will rise like a salmon, leap over the bridge, over me, and find his way home” (Alexie, 215). Thomas gives Victor one last word of advice before they leave when he simply says “Nothing stops cousin” (Alexie, 215) leaving the reader pondering what that means as the story wraps up. The two then part ways leaving behind their past as they look towards the future and whatever it may
He is a hothead and sarcastic, but loyal at the same time. Chuck is a friend and acts like a younger brother to Thomas. Chuck had used to be the youngest Glader, until Thomas arrived. Thomas is considered the Newbie, but starts to be a runner when he saved Alby from the Grievers. In the middle of the book, a girl arrives in the Box, the first girl at the Glades, and she is telepathic to Thomas.
Dashner has used the character Chuck to represent humanity. Despite the rough times Chuck still remains the innocent child with the big heart. He's the small, podgy, humorous 12 year old with the ugly bowl haircut amongst the big, strong, serious 16+ young adults. "Thomas turned to his right to see a kid standing nearby, short and podgy, staring at him. He was young- probably the youngest of any in the group he'd seen so far, maybe twelve or thirteen years old. His brown hair hung over his ears and neck, scraping the tops of his shoulders. Blue eyes shone through his otherwise pitiful face, flabby and flushed." (Thomas's description of Chuck, pg.13-14). Chuck is the odd one out, and Dashner has purposely made him to stand out in order to emphasise how the others have lost a sense of their humanity. Chuck also has the ability to return and remind other characters of this lost sense, in particular Thomas. The friendship struck by these two characters is rather heartwarming. As much as Thomas tries to deny their relationship at first, he can't help but take on a big brother like role towards him. Through this connection Chuck helps us to identify the sense of humanity Tom has lost, compassion and real emotion, as well as being able to remind Tom again of what it feels like to truly love and care. "Thomas stared at him, stared at his lifeless body. Something happened within Thomas. It started deep down in his chest, a seed of rage. Of revenge. Of hate. Something dark and terrible. And then it exploded, bursting through his lungs, through his neck, through his arms and legs. Through his mind". (Thomas feelings towards Chucks murder, pg.354). This emotion from Thomas was evoked by Chuck. Hate, one of humanities strongest emotions that can only truly be brought on by loving something so much. Tom’s feelings towards Chuck were able to return is strong emotions and fuel his motivation.
When the water had started churning, her younger self hadn’t realized what was happening. The scent of water and wet earth hit her at the same time a spiral of water came shooting out, and the knife landed on the grass beside her with a heavy thud. She had fallen back in her ass...stunned. Her small
