It is thought that Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdez disliked Juan, and attempting to make him look foolish, spread the rumor saying that Juan Ponce de Leon was looking for the fountain of youth. Both Juan Ponce de Leon’s birthplace and birthdate are not known for sure. Based on their research, historians believe Ponce de Leon was born in either 1460 or 1474. He is thought to be born in Tierra de Campos. Tierra de Campos is a village in northwestern Spain. He was likely born into a noble family. Noble families sons’ were sent to work for famous nobleman. Working for a nobleman would help further his education to become a knight. First, Ponce de Leon became a page to Pedro Nunez de Guzman. As a page, Juan served meals and went to several events with Guzman and his wife. As a teenager, Juan’s position required more work. Juan became a squire. As a squire, Ponce de Leon cared for Guzman’s armor, and assisted him in battle against the muslims. Ponce de Leon’s career as an explorer began in 1493, on Columbus’s second voyage. A Spanish explorer, Cabeza De Vaca, was the first person to ever step foot on Texas’ soil. He documented his journey about his findings in Texas and the Americas. but he was not the first to discover Florida. Juan Ponce De Leon was a great explorer he was born around the 1460’s and came from a village called San Tervas de Campos (Lawson 1). At an early age he trained to become an aristocrat, he was a very intelligent explorer. Before Florida he was the governor of Puerto Rico until the title was prevented to be established by the Crown because of Ovando. A series of events that followed made him believe that there wasn’t anything for him there anymore.
In the 16th century Spaniards Herman Cortes and Christopher Columbus set out on endeavoring journeys in search of new worlds. Christopher Columbus encountered, in the Caribbean islands, a group of extremely simplistic Native Americans. Herman Cortes however encountered a much more advanced Native American group in Meso America; we formally know this area to be Mexico. In my essay I will be comparing and contrasting several aspects between both of these Native American Civilizations including sophistication, technology, housing, weapons, religion and their reaction to the Spaniards. Letters written by Columbus and Cortes will be used to make these comparisons.
Born sometime around 1485 in Medellin Spain, one of the most prosperous conquistadors of the time was born. In an early age, he was said to be attending the school of the University of Salamanca to initially studying law. But on 1504 he sails to Santo Domingo for a short time. In 1511 he moves to Cuba to help Diego Velasquez to conquer the island. This movement helped Hernan Cortez later on becoming the conquistador that claims the Aztec empire for Spain.
When he landed amid the Inca Empire and its rigid structure and golden riches, he immediately saw potential for occupying the area and bring glory and wealth to Spain. Juan Ponce de Leon began exploring the Floridian coast in 1513. He had 200 men who helped explored the Florida coast. His voyages coincided with the latter journeys of Columbus and while he was exploring the peninsula he was dogged by other Spanish fleets hoping to secure whatever treasures his expeditions might find.
