The Life of Walter Mitty takes you through the everyday life of a man named Walter who experiences spastic daydreams of opportunity. Though the short story was the first with the concept from James Thurber , the movie contains a better understanding of Walter Mitty’s life. The movie presents a better perspective on Walter’s life. Whereas the short story had no flavor or color that made you need to continue reading. The Film on the other hand grabs you with the display of wonder and conflict. Movie base by far contains more content compared to the story itself. Most of the content comes from the daydreams that Walter has throughout both the movie and the book. Overall, the movie brings Walter’s dreams to a reality perspective then a disconnected standpoint.
When watching the movie you can see the perspective of a job and the bore of it all. In the story however it makes the reader feel disconnected for only seeing in between scenes that trigger a daydream. This goes on throughout the story without a real plot. It seems as if the short story itself doesn’t have a plot as each dream is extreme without a peeking point. The movie on the other hand has a well thought out exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.In the short story there is no resolve at any time for it ends with a daydream. In the last scene on page 7 it states, “Fleeting smile playing on his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud,” From the text it clearly shows that he has the end in mind as he waits for his wife or possibly his life is so slow that waiting for her is irritable. The movies climax however is more intense since we get to actually see Walter and his life. So when the watcher sees him lose his job it allows them to be upset and to feel an emotional impact.
