Edgar Allan Poe and Washington Irving are both enthralling writers. They both have unusual styles of writing but they are similar in some ways. The writers are comparable in the use of tone in their works. Irving‘s use of tone in his stories are typically optimistic, yet dramatic. Poe’s uses of tone in his stories are filled with horror and are also dramatic. Poe and Irving use different techniques to develop a complex meaning in their short stories. For instance, elements such as imagery, tone, and irony are placed in these stories contribute to make these stories intense.

The headless horseman was trying to find the person of which whom stole his skull out of his grave.The legend of the sleepy hollow was wrote by Washington Irving in 1820. Sleep hollow was based on the classic tale “The legend of the sleepy hollow”, which was directed by Tim Burton and was released on November 17th 1999. The main characters are Ichabod Crane, Katrina Van Tassel and, the headless horseman.In comparing the movie and the story, there are differenced in their characterization of Ichabod Crane, the rise and action of the headless horseman, also as well as the plot structure. This story is a love triangle.

This created a lot of conflict between the two men and tested their manhood. Ichabod Crane ends up getting chased out of town by the Headless Horsemen. This led to Brom Bones sweeping Katrina off of her feet and he being the one who ends up getting the girl.. In the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving uses imagery to create the idea that Ichabod is adored by the people of his community.

Similarly, in these books, Irving balanced the demands of commerce and art, of appeals to greed and to cultural values (Anderson par 6). In"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" Washington Irving uses the themes artificiality vs. naturalness; hypocrisy, greed, and industrialism as threats to an American dream of rustic plethora and simple fulfillment; the uses of imagination. The tone of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is gently mocking. Irving uses symbols, allusions and irony to develop his themes. Ichabod Crane, the schoolmaster in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” has no special practical abilities but, greedy for materialistic comfort, he falls for the robust, average, down to earth daughter of a farmer, not someone who would suit him. Crane is supposed to be the scholarly light of the village, instructing others, but he is incapable of handling his own life successfully. He is so vain that he spends hours dressing himself for the party at the Van Tassels, when he doesn't stand a chance against the "burly, roaring, roystering blade" of Brom

It was a windy and foggy day in sleepy hollow. Clouds are gray, leaves falling like fall and trees dancing in the wind. As Ichabod Crane walks pass the trials of sleepy hollow he sees a black crow flying in the sky and was frightened when it appeared behind him on the sign. The town of sleepy hollow is known for its crazy mythical and supernatural stories of witches, ghosts and the most well known; The Headless Horseman.

Rather than attempt to dissect the works of a more obscure writer I've decided to go with America's first well known and widely respected author, Washington Irving. Washington's story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is well known among my peers, but I can accurately assume far less have bothered to read it. I am sure most are familiar with the many movies and cartoon knockoffs the Headless Horseman has spawned. They shall not fret however, as I will explore this literary classic for thy dear lackadaisical MTV generation.

Ichabod Crane is the rather unlikable main character of Washington Irving’s short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Throughout the story, Crane is showed to have an unusually large amount of undesirable characteristics which serve to make him difficult to identify with; no one wants to relate themselves to a villain. Along with quite a few other negative attributes, Crane reveals himself to be superstitious, greedy, cowardly, self-important, misogynistic and, contriving. Cranes behavior towards others is superficially charming but under the surface is a man out only for himself.

The story may or may not have come from the German tales of the headless horseman that have influenced the Dutch tales. Brom Bones is one of the main characters who symbolizes country versus rural and hero vs villain.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a classic story by the widely respected author, Washington Irving. It tells of the main character Ichabod Crane, who was a native of Connecticut in times after the Revolutionary War. He decided to move into an area known as Sleepy Hollow, which was a quiet town that was known for its many superstitions and haunting tales, which captured his imagination. After living there for a while, he makes a rival in someone known as Brom Bones as they fight over a woman. As his imagination and carefree attitude grow throughout the story, he begins to see the consequences when he first loses the girl, and later falls for the trickery of Brom Bones in a spine-chilling ending.

A common story told around Halloween is the tale of the Headless Horseman. Within the past century, both Disney and Hollywood have given their views on the classic tale. Disney holds most of the original concept of Irving 's tale than the Tim Burton’s movie. However, the changes in the bridge scene, the concept of the characters, and the horseman takes valuable meaning away from Irving 's timeless classic “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
