When anthropologists are studying a culture, they usually look at the language first; language can tell us a lot about a group of people such as their beliefs, values, and customs. Researchers oftentimes find both, variations and similarities, between two geographically related (or even non-related) societies. For example, there are colors, shades, and hues that are visible to some cultures but not to others because the words for them do not exists in the language of that culture. Although many concepts are not found all over the globe and in all religions, “evil” is a term that seems to exist in nearly every language all over the globe. The Snopes family find a landlord willing to take them in and provide them with land to farm on, the Major de Spain. One day, Abner soils the Major de Spain’s imported rug despite the housekeeper’s protests.The Major demands that Abner have the rug cleaned and then return it but rather than washing the imported textile, he burns it. Naturally, Abner’s treatment of the carpet angers the Major who presents a case to the Justice. When the Justice demands that Abner has to pay or damages done to the textile, Abner becomes enraged and plans to burn the barn down. When Abner’s youngest son, Sarty, finds out about his father’s plans, he is conflicted; this is the point where he is being tempted by evil.
