(The Journey: Spiritual Disciplines) Spiritual disciplines will prepare us for our journey in Christ. I feel if understanding correctly, the classical Christian Pilgrimage remind us that we all have issues requiring regular examination. In chapter eight, the classical Christian Pilgrimage tells us we are at different stages on the path of wholeness in Christ. However, in my thoughts some areas of our Christian journey we may be doing well, but in other areas we have not touched at all. Not to mention, these are the place we are not ready or capable of handling yet, however, as we mature in God and He knows what we can handle, then we are awakened. God awakens us to our true selves which have not been completely revealed. In reality, once we reach maturity to God, he reveals all that is hidden deep inside of us (the real us/you). By the same token, he let us see the inner behaviors, attitudes, desires, in fact how we measure up in them being Christ-like. I feel the awakening stage deals with the comfort of being set free of these issues that are holding us back also causing detours on our path to wholeness in Christ. Equally, the threat is being afraid to see who we really are; also how far from Christ-like we really are. We must first be awakened from our separation also alienation from God (Mulholland 79-82). Additionally, awakening, purgation, illumination, also union are stages that I agree on; we need these in order to have a closer relationship with
Bois Du was the writer of “Our Spiritual strivings”. He was saying he was a black man telling how he was speaking for blacks including himself. Then you have booker T.Washington who was explaining his disagreements between South American and others . However, in Washington's blacks will not protest for equality or civil rights and whites would provide He asked whites to hire negros instead of immigrant torrent According to Du Bois he's explaining how blacks didn't have many opportunity. Also how blacks were fighting for their lives. Even though they still didn't get peace they still fought but not only has not found freedom his promise land. Booker T. Washington was born a slave in Franklin County , Virginia Booker T. Washington became
Another, aspect, spirituality is not as much a prearranged system, it is a quest and a prolongation of one’s development.
2) Christian mysticism originally consisted of a threefold path for achieving the unification of their soul to the presence of god. However, the author Evelyn Underhill recognized two additional paths to achieve unison. The initial stage where one begins to wonder the possibility of a divine existence has been termed as The Awakening. Awakening within a person can be due to any number of reasons or situations which the person experiences. Purification or purgative is the initiative step taken by aspiring Christian mystics who have felt the divine power. It required the mystic to be disciplined in many factors with an emphasis on the human body. As such, Prayer and meditation at regular times and different postures like standing or kneeling
The topic of spirituality and religion is filled with much confusion. In most all religions, there is a greater purpose in which believers attempt to reach a better state of living, usually in death. The question then arises, how does one go about obtaining this better living? In the book Four Spiritualities, Richardson defines four main spiritual pathways: the journey of unity which pertains to jnana yoga, the journey of devotion which pertains to bhakti yoga, the journey of works which pertains to karma yoga, and the journey of harmony which pertains to raja yoga. Furthermore, he correlates four main Myer-Briggs personality types. With these four pathways and personality types, one can
“Of Our Spiritual Strivings” is the title of the first chapter, and W.E.B Du Bois starts chapter 1 with a short anecdote about the nature of liberal whites. He, later on, reflects on the realization of difference such as the whites who felt superior would ask inappropriate questions and having the power to decide what’s right or wrong. Also, reflecting on the feelings of exclusion stemming from the differences. Du Bois not only reflected on the feelings of Black folks but for people who considered themselves outsiders.
What is a bias and why is it such a relevant topic. A bias is an ignorance of a fact, perspective, topic, or cause that’s usually followed by arrogance or closed-mindedness. Throughout history, especially America’s history, women and people of the black race have been mistreated or misunderstood in some way due to biases. In fact, we know this from “An Address by Elizabeth Cady Stanton” and “The Souls of Black Folk: Of Our Spiritual Strivings”.
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis has taught children about the Holocaust, segregation and AIDS. This Museum has decided to teach children about world religions. This new exhibit is called “Sacred Journeys.” The National Geographic partnered with the museum for the “Sacred Journeys” exhibit that is funded by the Lilly Endowment.
Spiritual enlightenment won’t just come and tap you on the shoulder. You must want IT…seek IT…and embark upon your soul’s journey.
During the Medieval ages period there were different meanings to spiritual journey but somehow they all have had shared a belief, which was to believe in god no matter the different Journey that may have came across. The Period of the Medieval ages came with a lot of information and question to belief whether it was true or not. One of the things i have found more interesting was The ‘’roman civilization’’ it was the start of the 5th century CE to the the renaissance more so it was the timing of the 13,14,15 century as well but it was depending on the location of Europe timing of factors that
Throughout the semester I have developed an understanding for the spiritual disciplines; silence, solitude, and Sabbath; which has taught me how to live an intention Christ-centered life. The disciplines have not only helped my personal daily life, but they have also helped me better understand Christ himself. I can, without a doubt, say that I know that God gave us the gifts of spiritual disciplines to help guide us in the crazy culture we live in. I have gained a new appreciation for the maker of our world as He has gone out of His way to love on us, and all He asks us in return to practice disciplines and grow closer to him. The disciplines have have taught me that seeking God is about more than just saying a prayer before bed. Instead, it is practicing the disciplines and seeing His faithfulness through the actions. My practice of silence has taught me that the world is a loud place full of so many distractions. This specific practice has helped me seek God, in a deep way, by committing to listening to him in silence rather than wondering why I could never here him in the midst of the crowds. My practice of solitude has become a sort of Bible study time for me. A time to be alone and remember all the good our King has done and will continue to do for us. My practice of Sabbath has helped me start of each week with a positive outlook. Surprisingly it has also given me a deeper understanding of academics as well as it forces me to get my homework done before my day of
What are the four paths to god? In Hinduism there are four spiritual paths that lead to the union of god. The first step to reach to the four paths of god is through yoga. Based on the book, Smith says that yoga means “to unite and to place under disciplined training” (27). People have four different types of personality that lead to god. The four personalities are that some people are reflective, others are emotional, others are active, and finally some are experimentally inclined (Smith 28). In order to reach the union to god there is a first step to yoga. It “involves the cultivation of habits as non-injury, truthfulness, non-stealing, self-control, cleanliness, contentment, self-discipline, and a compelling desire to reach
I remember the day when I accepted God as my Lord, and savior. It was the best feeling I had ever felt other than the day that I married my husband. It felt so pure, yet innocent and that was the moment when I decided I was going to start living in a manner that was pleasing to God. I was raised in the house of God but when I got older I went astray, but I never forgot the teachings of God because they were in my heart. But I was not doing anything to glorify God’s name. There were some things that started to unfold at the church my family and I, were attending, and these findings impacted my faith and relationship with God in a negative way and as a result, I stopped attending. The spiritual disciplines that I have practiced are learning how to forgive, being more prayerful, being consistent with reading my Bible, strengthening my relationship with God, and learning how to have an open mind when it comes to other religions and their beliefs. The reason I focused on prayer was because I want to obtain peace and a sound mind. I tend to worry about things a lot and would often become overwhelmed with my busy life that I forget to incorporate these important things into my schedule. I began with prayer because I felt like it was something that I needed to address first. Every morning I would pray for myself and my family, and when it was bedtime I would pray and anoint our heads with oil. This was something that I always did as a Christian woman but participating in this
A spiritual journey is the search of God in our lives. This journey often helps us to find the true inner meaning in our life. It doesn’t matter whether you go to church or not, nature is leading us to God.
Formation occurs in every aspect of a student’s education. Students are formed by all they do, read, perceive, and interpret. This includes their taken-for-granted assumptions and expectations. Formation occurs in the gaps as one values the questions (Benner et al., 2010) and attending during these gaps can break “the habit of hearing only what we already understand” (Heidegger , 1971, p. 54). Palmer (2009) described a tragic gap, the space between hard realities and what one knows to be possible.
My faith journey has been challenged throughout my life. I have had many ups and downs, and many times when I questioned my faith. Although those times were rough, I found comfort in God and knowing that He is always there for me. One of my favorite quotes is “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13. This quote got me through tough times when my faith was shaking.
