Ultimately, Granny Weatherall shows herself to be an independant and strong-willed woman. However, "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" does not focus on Granny's exterior beng, but rather her interior thoughts and emotions. This personal and in-depth characterization of Granny reveals that her need to be completely independant is the result of being abandoned at an altar by a man she loved. As a young adult, Granny let down her guard in order to communicate her unadulterated love for George. The act of George rejecting Granny's vulnerability caused her intense pain, leaving her "blind and sweating with nothing under her feet and the walls falling away." She keeps herself busy in order to forget the memory of George. In fact, it seemed as though the entire life Granny built for herself was to prove to George that he took nothing away from her, which acts as a giant …show more content…

Erikson theorizes that a failiure to obtain a secure reationship with another person causes increased difficulty in forming relationships later in life. This is shown through Granny's fear of vulnerability and dependency. Thus, hindering any possibility of a loving reationship. After George, Granny marries a man named John and eventually concieves children with him. It is arguable whether Granny ever loved John or if she merely used him as a tool in order to achieve what society percieves as a fufilled life (getting married , raising children, owning a house, etc.). In fact the only mention of Granny's "love" toward John is when she is imaganing herself listing her accomplishments to George. She mentions her marriage, her children, her house and then follows all of this with "like any other woman." It is revealed that Joh had died and this caused for Granny to once again reject dependency and raise her children
