The Jeep is the father of the 4x4 SUV and was made for one reason and one reason only: World War II. Army official correspondent, Ernie Pyle stated, "Good Lord, I don 't think we could continue the war without the jeep. It does everything. It goes everywhere. It 's as faithful as a dog, strong as a mule, and as agile as a goat. It constantly carries twice what it was designed for, and keeps on going. It doesn 't even ride so badly after you get used to it”("Jeep Facts"). The first jeep that was ever created was really not what the army expected. The first run of the war Jeep was quite simple because it was assembled from mostly scrap parts. It was real low without springs, and it was a rear mount engine. The military also gave it names like "Old Number One". The first Jeep was a huge feat for the United States Army. It allowed them to travel basically anywhere. It also gave them quite the advantage over their enemies. The bantam Jeep had to be delivered to Camp Holabird in Maryland so that the company could meet the bid, but no one had absolutely any idea of how to get it there. Finally two volunteer technicians packed their bags with food and water and set out on a 450 mile trip to Holabird, which was absolutely unheard of for any military vehicle at the time. The U.S. Military instantly fell in love with the Jeep and the opportunities it would create.
The U.S. Military loved the Jeep and all of its capabilities. "Grueling tests showed that the Jeep could fight as well as run," wrote Major J.H. Chamberlain. "It could go paces a motorcycle couldn 't. Besides, a motorcycle dispatch rider is vulnerable; a single sniper could cut him down,letting vital orders fall into enemy hands. A Jeep, carrying men and machine guns, is a far tougher proposition.
