The Jeep is the father of the 4x4 SUV and was made for one reason and one reason only: World War II. Army official correspondent, Ernie Pyle stated, "Good Lord, I don 't think we could continue the war without the jeep. It does everything. It goes everywhere. It 's as faithful as a dog, strong as a mule, and as agile as a goat. It constantly carries twice what it was designed for, and keeps on going. It doesn 't even ride so badly after you get used to it”("Jeep Facts"). The first jeep that was ever created was really not what the army expected. The first run of the war Jeep was quite simple because it was assembled from mostly scrap parts. It was real low without springs, and it was a rear mount engine. The driver had to steer with a …show more content…
The military also gave it names like "Old Number One". The first Jeep was a huge feat for the United States Army. It allowed them to travel basically anywhere. It also gave them quite the advantage over their enemies. The bantam Jeep had to be delivered to Camp Holabird in Maryland so that the company could meet the bid, but no one had absolutely any idea of how to get it there. Finally two volunteer technicians packed their bags with food and water and set out on a 450 mile trip to Holabird, which was absolutely unheard of for any military vehicle at the time. The U.S. Military instantly fell in love with the Jeep and the opportunities it would create.
The U.S. Military loved the Jeep and all of its capabilities. "Grueling tests showed that the Jeep could fight as well as run," wrote Major J.H. Chamberlain. "It could go paces a motorcycle couldn 't. Besides, a motorcycle dispatch rider is vulnerable; a single sniper could cut him down, letting vital orders fall into enemy hands. A Jeep, carrying men and machine guns, is a far tougher proposition. And, vital for combat strategy, the jeep is a clawing, climbing hellion in reaching good places to shoot from."("Jeep Enters WWII"). The U.S. Military was not at all happy with the production rates. So the they sent out the blueprints to Ford to help boost production and thus came another vehicle: Willys Jeep. When the blueprints were sent to Ford Motor Company, a quite patient man with

General Motors at that time was making anything from tanks to ammunition casings (Carroll, n.d.). I was unable to track down what exactly my grandma was working on but at that time she lived in Pontiac, Michigan and many plants around there were producing a variety of different products for the war. After
Further, the utilitarian exterior of a Jeep and the racing style of a Dodge Hellcat are in stark contrast like the stereotypes of their drivers. Jeep owners are associated with a rugged, outdoor lifestyle while those behind the wheel of a Hellcat may find
First is the Nuclear Reactor, built in 1942 by the guy named Enrico Fermi was the world’s first nuclear reactor for producing power, Fermi called it an “atomic pile”also it was built in the University of Chicago(Smithsonian Timeline of Inventions). Four years later the microwave oven was introduced, but home microwaves didn’t appear until 1955. John Eckert and John Mauchly came up with the computer in 1946 at the University at Pennsylvania(Smithsonian Timeline of Inventions). It was called the ENICA, that stood for Electronic, Numerical, Integrator, and Calculator, it filled an entire room. During the war the U.S Army wanted an all-terrain recon vehicle,so the Willy Jeep was created. Army specs wanted the vehicle had to have four-wheel drive, a wheelbase not more than 80 inches, tread not more than 47 inches, ground clearance of at least 6.25 inches, a payload of 600 pounds, cooling system that would prevent engine overheating at sustained low speeds, and a vehicle weight of about 1,300 pounds(PAhistory). The jeep was built in Pennsylvania and made by a guy named Willys, owned a company called Willys-Overland. During the war automakers built about 650,000 jeeps during WW2, and entered the service in the late
and other violence. The Jeep has always had this image around the world because of it its heavy
While the onset of war led to a hugely inflated military production capacity, American industry never completed reversion back to the pre-war focus on purely civilian items. In fact, the value of military production facilities increased by 3300% between 1939 and 1944, and less than a third of all plants created during the war were converted to civilian production (Walton 551). Paul Koistinen writes,
Competition and behavior: The SUV industry in North America was becoming increasingly competitive, with "over 30 SUV models, their prices ranging from $10,000 to $60,000. Market leaders were Jeep and Ford, with Jeep having a strong heritage in the USA much in the same was as Land Rover did in the United Kingdom. Jeep itself had three lines; much in the way Land Rover was trying to carry various lines for different segments of the market. The international impact
Ford, like other automobile companies, entered the aviation business during World War I, building Liberty engines. After the war, it returned to auto manufacturing until 1925, when Ford acquired the Stout Metal Airplane Company. Ford's most successful aircraft was the Ford 4AT Trimotor, often called the "Tin Goose" because of its corrugated metal construction. It used a new alloy called Alclad that combined the corrosion resistance of aluminum with the strength of duralumin.
With the success of the assembly line, Ford was very please however he had a bigger goal set. Ford wanted to produce cheap cars for the common people to use. Ford made many different types of cars and experimented with each of them. They were all good but not good enough. After many different models, Ford achieved his goal with his invention of the Ford Model T. The Model T was a fully functional compact automobile with a good transmission and torque as well as comfort and size. Apart from that, the most important aspect of the Model T was that is was extremely cheap. As Sobel states,”...the model T was only worth $290 in 1924.” This was a huge
The first tanks came with the internal combustion engine and caterpillar tracks. These, however, were quite unreliable and broke down very frequently. The naval force devised bigger, stronger ships with bigger guns. Their new and improved submarines were imperative in this war. They aided in the strategy of war of attrition, or breaking the enemy down by attacking its personnel and supplies.[viii]
The Jeep market in the USA has been divided into a number of segments, among which are demographic, psychographic and behaviors of the target market. This paper shall focus on the Jeep market in the U.S. and more specifically the demographic and psychographic characteristics of the market and behaviors of target market.
There is a new kind of tank called DUKW. So what is DUKW? The DUKW was designed by General Motors Corporation during World War II for transporting goods and troops over land and water and for use approaching and crossing beaches. And during the WWI, DUWK help United State a lot. It helped United State to supply the US Army, US Marine Corps and Allied forces. “The United States produced 20,000 DUKWs during World War II. Through lend-lease the British were provided with 2,000 of the trucks” (Encyclopædia Britannica). We can find that DUKW helped US a lot. 20,000 is not a small number, and those 20,000 DUKW supplied, can transport countless resource for their supplied, and what DUKW did in WWII was impossible to ignore, it become one reason that allies can win the WWII.
The very first Jeep was created in 1941. This Jeep was known as the Military Bantam AKA the MB Jeep. The United States Department of War needed a new light, cross-country, reconnaissance vehicle. Therefore an American automobile company called Willy’s-Overland and Motors created the Army’s new vehicle. This vehicle was a 2.2L engine, 4 wheel-drive, 2-door, with a 3-speed manual transmission Jeep. The “Willy’s Jeep” another name for the MB was also a ¼ ton vehicle that was the top of the line military technology. Jeeps were essential to transportation of military soldiers and equipment to designated spots. With this amazing help of the Jeep, the army was getting to its peak in World War II. Jeeps grabbed my attention and interest because not only do I own one, but I believe the iconic history of Jeeps is amazing. It amazes me that this small vehicle can have such a huge impact on history as becoming the “World War II Vehicle”. Jeeps have inspired other similar light utility vehicles and are the oldest off-road vehicle ever made. Jeeps also have a huge impact on today’s modern society. Jeeps bring society together. Jeep people have a slang term for themselves called “Jeepers”. Within today’s society there are Jeep Clubs. The aftermath of the Military Bantam Jeep, the Civilian Jeep, was another start to the legacy of Jeeps. In 1944 the CJ was brought to life with in the Jeep world. Along with all of its other brothers in the military this was the first Jeep to be used in public

In 1908 Henry Ford had constructed the Model T; the time it took him to create this automobile was 13 days. Now eager to achieve more, Ford knew that he needed a place to construct these cars. He also knew that to sell mass amounts he would have to sell cheap, and buy parts and supplies even cheaper (Douglas, 25). The construction of the first Ford Motor plant used the world’s only conveyer belt. This was part of the Fords plan to build fast, when he constructed the assembly line cars were pumped out in as fast as 15 minuets, this was down from 19 days. Ford was able to make the automobile a car for everyman, a working man with a family.
