On Wednesday June 18, 2015 nine shot dead at a historical black church in Charleston, South Dakota and only a month later on July 16, 2015 in Chattanooga, Tennessee with five dead leaving citizens devastated. The past year contains more than 350 mass shootings, averaging 1.02 shootings per day and continuous growing number of deaths, multiple mass shootings around the world leaving dozens of victims in its path. There is no exact definition of mass shootings, but most sources believe it is when four or more people are shot in one location. Citizens in America are easily able to obtain a gun and the growing issue is whether this should change and stronger laws in place. Although citizens believe gun control laws take away second amendment and right to protect themselves, mass shootings are increasing yearly and action needs to happen to prevent the next attack. America’s at a high with the country being the most dangerous with firearms, causing mass murder and homicide compared among other countries around the world. A Professor at University of Alabama states “The U.S. represents less than 5% of the 7.3 billion global population but accounted for 31% of global mass shooters during the period from 1966 to 2012, more than any other country…” (Palazzolo and Flynn “U.S. Leads World in Mass Shootings”) In comparison to UK and Australia taking on stronger gun laws and willing to ban certain weapons and placing stricter background checks to make mass shootings less
According to CNN’s article “A visual guide: Mass shootings in America” between the years 1966 and 2012 America has had 90 mass shootings while the next closest country, Philippines, only has 18. This is a startling number for any country to. In the same article, of the first 164 days
“ My biggest frustration so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage… This is becoming a norm. We should be ashamed.” President Barack Obama said in regard to the shooting in Newton Connecticut in June of 2014. “We're the only developed country on earth where this happens and it happens now once a week, and it's a one day story. There's no place else like this,” he added. America is a unique country in that it is one of the only countries in which the right to bear arms is constitutionally protected. It is also the sole country with the most civilian owned guns and the highest rate of gun related violence. A mass shooting is defined as a single shooting incident which kills or injures four or more people, including the assailant. Between the years 2000 and 2014, the United states witnessed 133 mass shootings which is ten times more than those observed in developed countries such as Germany, Switzerland and Finland. According to the Mass Shooting Tracker, in 2015 only, there were 372 mass shootings in the US. 475 people were killed and 1,870 were wounded in these shootings. Excluding suicides, some 13,286 people were killed in 2015 in the US by firearms and 26,819 people were injured. According to the most recent data, ninety-two people on average are killed in the United States by guns.
In about every nation, gun control has always been an issue of controversy. Gun control laws are quite different from country to country, each possessing different requirements, specifications, and ordinances, so on and so on. What will be examined are the specified gun control laws in three international countries, ranging from Canada, Australia, and Japan, as well as a comparison and contrast of the the similarities and unique differences toward American gun control laws and those in other countries, and finally, the effects of having loose gun control laws. Unlike America, these countries possess stricter laws regarding gun control.
The Gun Violence Achieve states, “there have been more than 1,500 mass shootings in America since Sandy Hook in December 2012”. It appears that America has been in a constant state of grief, prayer, and remembrance from these atrocities that we continue to see across our country. But yet after each horrific event, it is as if they recede into our memory without any changes implemented regarding gun violence and national safety. Our country is not hopeless. There are steps we can collectively take to prevent such mass shootings from tearing our country apart.
In America there is a growing issue some say. The issue being gun control and how guns affect and/or end lives, the even bigger issue though is the issue of how people can or can not write about gun control to educate the public. Gun Control is an issue that needs to be avoided when trying to persuade readers of an opinion for two reasons, the issue of gun control is a terrible essay topic because there are too many emotions involved in gun control debates and because in general there is no good research on gun control. The only essays and articles available for research are articles filled with biased through the use of Aristotelian Appeals. Aristotelian Appeals include ethos, logos, and pathos each appeal using a different strategy to
The problem with guns in America has been an ongoing issue for many years. According to statistics from the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, in 2010 alone there were about 31,076 deaths by gun and all were either homicides, suicides or unintentional shootings. 73,505 people were treated in the hospital for non fatal gunshot wounds in 2010 as well. Gun control laws are a benefit to America because they would help reduce gun deaths and other gun-related incidents all over the nation. Furthermore, they would reduce crime all over the country, for example armed robbery and assault with a gun, and homicide. Although it is believed that gun control laws will obstruct the right to self-defense or deny people a sense of safety, statistics show that guns are rarely used in self defense. Not only that, but the majority of adults including gun owners, support gun control such as background checks and bans on assault weapons (ProCon.Org). There have already been far too many innocent deaths in the past.
Hello I will be discussing current gun laws. Basically, I will be disputing the statement that we in American should have stricter gun laws in all cities in efforts to keep down gun related crimes and murders. Compared to states that have strict gun laws, states that have lax or no gun laws do not have less crime rates. In fact, out of the 50 states that allow citizens to have a concealed weapons license only about 10 have crime rates that need their laws to be revamped. That is only 5%. So here are some statistics and points that will get you to see things from a proven standpoint.
By Second Amendment in the Constitution, the subjects have the benefit to have and remain fight prepared. Regardless, this has remained a basic issue since decades. There have been a lot of senseless murders and killings around the United States. With better gun control laws in effect these killings and murders would not have been possible. The government, the states, and the people all need to work together to come to a solution to prevent things like this in the future. Better gun control laws would mean less killings and murders happening around the world. Think of it like this, you at work and you get a call saying that there was a shooting at your family member’s job, or school, etc. With better gun control laws that call will never come.
Plaguing the nation, for quite sometime, has been the issue of gun control. Whether you are for gun control, or against it, almost everyone has an opinion on it. One organization, Moms Demand Action, has released a series of ads expressing their views on the issue. Released in April 2013, was a series of print ads entitled “Choose One,” in which a child is shown holding an assault weapon which is juxtaposed to another child holding an item that is banned in schools, but is not harmful. As stated above, the ads were released in April 2013, which was four months after the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. It is no doubt that these ads were created in response to the shooting due to the location and the theme of the ad. The specific ad that will be covered is the one that features a young girl holding an assault rifle, and the other girl holding a copy of ‘Little Red Riding Hood.’ The ad is meant to illustrate the absurdity of the lax laws regarding gun regulations. Moms Demand Action achieved their goal by presenting a thought-provoking and shocking ad.
There is quite a bit of prior research done on gender differences in regard to gun control. The following articles used all help to provide support for the hypothesis that in a comparison of individuals, women are more likely to support stricter gun control laws than men. Most of the articles use polling to help prove this hypothesis, and some even help explain what might cause women to be more supportive of stricter gun control and why this is significant.
On July 23, 2015, a 59-year-old man with a history of mental and legal problems shot up a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana(“Shootings Expose Gaps in Background Check System”). Even more shocking than this is the fact that the gun this man had purchased was purchased legally through a loophole in the current gun control regulations, which is exactly why these regulations must be tightened. What is gun control you might ask? Well, gun control is what the government has done to handle how a gun is made, how it is sold, and what citizens can and cannot do with a gun. Gun control is very important to society because if we didn’t have it, not just America, but the world would be anarchy since there wouldn’t be any laws that say that a person cannot go shoot up a school or shoot an innocent man on the streets. So basically, without gun control, anybody could do anything with a gun.
Gun control refers to the regulation of the manufacture, selling, owning or use of guns or firearms. That has been a very controversial debate, with one side saying that there should be no gun control at all because it leads to crime and accidents, while on the other hand, other people claim that one should be allowed to own a gun if they can afford, for their safety. There have been various incidents of accidents, and others have even led to death. However, the debate remains the same.
With the recent shootings at schools. Military bases or offices. People start to wonder whether gun control is needed in this time period. Passing of strict laws is creating a tension between people who believe Americans have the right to bear arms against those who think guns kill people and need to be controlled. Who should Americans believe?
The truth is, violent crimes in America are often very high, but in reality property crimes happen more. In the nine year olds case, the gun wasn’t properly put away, causing the tragic incident. Personally, I think if an individual has taken appropriate courses for owning a gun, have had a background check, and seem stable then it is fine for them to own a gun. Guns should be used for protection, hunting for food during the appropriate season, and used at a gun range where safe objects are the target. I have many friends who responsibly own guns and only use them when appropriate. However, if someone has purposefully committed a gun crime before, they shouldn’t be allowed a gun. This may seem unfair to some people but its only for America’s safety. Also, a person should be at least 21 to own a gun. If a person shooting a gun at a gun range is underage, they need to be accompanied by an adult with a license to carry.
Gun control has been a major problem in our society because it’s been in the (Molly)world just know one payed it any attention. In the year of 2014 a young man Travon martin passed away and it became a question of gun control. Gun laws are the cause of much of the violent crime in the United States and it needs to change who Is illegal interactions transportation of guns and mass shootings around the United States.
