Drug abuse has always been a very delicate question as it always it deals with the health, well-being and even lives of human beings belonging to any country. The position of the United States of America towards drugs has always been very clear and distinctively negative. Throughout the history of the country there were numerous cases against drug dealers, buyers and many more. These cases did always catch the attention of civil people who by showing interest in such cases revealed their worries about the future of their own children that one-day might face this problem, too. As time goes by it get even more clear that people need to feel protection from the side of law enforcement establishments such as police. Drugs may destroy the life …show more content…
Summarizing the main point in the opinion of the case it is necessary to start from its very beginning. The case was argued on the 28th of March 2001 and the decision was delivered on the 14th of May 2001. It was argued intensively and both of the sides were acted rather confident. The Oakland Cannabis Buyers’ Cooperative with Jeffrey Jones as a head started its life according to California’s Compassionate Use Act of 1996 and was started to follow medical purposes of distributing marijuana to people that in accordance with their state of health qualify for it as a treatment. This organization spent two years distributing marijuana to qualified patients until the year of 1998, when it was sued by USA. The main point of the argument was that USA’s government charge of Oakland Cannabis Buyers’ Cooperative breach of the Controlled Substances Act’s and mainly its embargo for distributing, manufacturing, and possessing of the substance, as far as marijuana is listed in the Controlled Substances Act. The activity of the Cooperative continued in spite of the District’s Court decision and its activity was very intense. The key issue presented by the Cooperative was its medical necessity defense, other words they stated that all the marijuana that was distributed by means of their organization was only distributed according to the medical necessity of this substance by qualified patients. As it has been already mentioned the District Court
In this paper I’m going to discuss one example of drug use and I’m going to relate it back to the public. While still posing the question “Is this a personal trouble or a public issue?”
Drug “abuse” is a socially constructed idea or concept. Society has determined the level of usage that constitutes abuse. Society has also deemed certain drugs illegal and others legal. When a drug was seen as “abused” it would become a social problem, which led to the drug being made illegal. Marijuana is currently illegal in some states and legal in others. Cocaine, LSD, meth, heroin, and PCP are all drugs that were legal in America at one point. (McCormick, 2011) These drugs were used in order to treat illnesses and as pain killers. These drugs were legal and used in many medical cases. However, they are now considered to be illegal and people who are caught with them face penalties.
Drugs have been used throughout the world for thousands of years, whereas drug use has existed here in the U.S for a little over a hundred years. Regardless of the time of existance or when and why they were created, drug use is and has always been a major problem throughout our society. From the opium addicts of the late 1800s (The Drug Policy Alliance, 2016), the Rock and Roll heroine addicts of the 1960s and 70s, to the creation of a more affordable cocaine-like drug called "crack" in the 1980 's, drugs have consistently been proven to contribute to criminal behavior, signifancantly change individuals, warp relationships, ruin lives, and even end them. Since this realization, the justice system of our country has taken many different approches to combating drugs and the problems that they create.
In the United States of America, we, the people value several things, some of which
What is advocacy? Advocacy is defined as the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal (Merriam-Webster, 2015) It is working publically to support specific causes, address problems, actively participating in politics and lobbying for a cause/ belief. Vocally working to support individual patients needs or rights, and working to educate the public regarding the cause. Nurses should be observant of patient’s behaviors and sensitive to patient’s communication cues. (Felicilda-Reynaldo, 2015) Substance abuse patients most often deny or downplay that they have a problem. The patient has to be honest with themselves and they have to be the ones who say
Over the last couple of years, there has been increased concern over the effects of drugs on the health of Americans. This is mainly due to the increased use of drugs by most citizens, which has caused the government to spend a lot of money to curb this problem. One of the most abused drugs is alcohol, and American citizens are increasingly becoming addicted to it. It is also the most undesirable drug, as it costs the government over $200 billion in terms of productivity, health and crime-related costs (Office of National Drug Control Policy 2).
What is a social problem? Social problem is every conditions that is recognized as a social problem existed for some time before it came to be “defined” as such.
Personal experience: mom not letting me hang out with older cousin, as i got older, realized it was because, him having a drug addiction.
Drugs have always been a matter in question in America and around the world. There are individual countries in the European Union that invest in treatment programs to aid people who have become dependent on drugs. However in America, the policies are devised to incarcerate American citizens in a massive scale. The bureau of justice statistics pulled numbers on the amount of people incarcerated for
In a world where addiction is a somewhat ‘taboo’ topic, it is hard to open up and converse with perspective employers, on what issues you have in your personal world. Thank God for the chance to heal a large part of those issues prior to seeking new employment. (And, I suggest that you do) Recovery from drug and/or alcohol addiction is not easy as it is, so it is immensely imperative that you make the necessary considerations before looking to jump head first into the workforce again.
The possibility to make an exception was reviewed in four medical cases: "The foregoing injunction does not apply to the distribution of cannabis by the Oakland Cannabis Buyers’ Cooperative and Jeffrey Jones to patient-members who (1) suffer from a serious medical condition, (2) will suffer imminent harm if the patient-member does not have access to cannabis, (3) need cannabis for the treatment of the patient-member's medical condition, or need cannabis to alleviate the medical condition or symptoms associated with the medical condition, and (4) have no reasonable legal alternative to cannabis for the effective treatment or alleviation of the patient-member's medical condition or symptoms associated with the medical condition because the patient-member has tried all other legal alternatives to cannabis and the alternatives have been ineffective in treating or alleviating the patient-member's medical condition or symptoms associated with the medical condition, or the alternatives result in side effects which the patient-member cannot reasonably tolerate." This “critical exception” by itself caused a lot of arguments and undermined the steadfastness of the Controlled Substances Act. Nevertheless, the decision of the case remained unflinching and by this produced a lot of opposition.
Would it be morale to legalize drugs, and would it be right to do. The questions that I am going to look at from the point of view of the ethical principles of Mills , Kant , and Rawls, are is it moral for what are presently considered illicit drugs to become legally produced in the US. The next question will be is it moral for individuals to consume what are presently considered illicit drugs. I will also be stating my best arguments for my views on this subject and wither a criminal organization should be held responsible for supporting these problems.
War on drugs has been an issue in the United States for several years now. Being a college student at East Carolina University, I have met several people in the community and have witnessed a lot. As I continued to grow as an adult at East Carolina, I began to fully understand how serious of a problem drugs were. People see doing drugs as a way to fit in with others, using it for social purposes. After having friends go to the hospital or sadly, die from an overdose on drugs, I have decided to take action myself. It seems that the majority of the people today do not want to fully understand the consequences that come from drugs. Yes, they feel sympathy for those who have passed away from overdose or mixing drugs with other drugs but do not seem to change their ways any. We first as a community need to understand and accept the fact that drugs are a serious issue and action needs to take place.
November 15, 2017, The music industry lost a very young alternative rap artist by the name of “LIl Peep” The cause of death was an apparent drug overdose due to the amount of Xanax the artist consumed. Throughout Peep’s career, the often talked about drugs and his obsession with them. On his social media he showed drugs and even videos of him consuming them. Sadly he isn’t the only artist or public figure influencing drug abuse. From the trunk of an unknown car, to your doorstep. The amounts of ways drugs can be transported to you are copious. What is a drug?. A drug is a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.
As we all know drugs are given to you by a doctor for a specific purpose, either to cure an illness or treat an ongoing disease. Otherwise taking prescription drugs can be dangerous for your body and overall physical health. To go with this they can be very addictive if someone starts to take them for recreational purposes. Just as hard drugs can take control of someone’s life, so can prescribed drugs if is it not a monitored situation.
