The Iroquois were a Native American tribe living in the Northeast of the North American continent before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. The people of the tribe lived together in villages- men worked the land and hunted while women grew plants and crops such as corn. The Iroquois had a ritual called “mourning war,” which was the act of waging war on other tribes in mourning of their soldiers that had died in the previous war. The prisoners taken in these “mourning wars” would be presented to the mothers of the dead soldiers and these women would then decided if the prisoners were worthy of taking the place of their sons in Iroquisan society. The Iroquois were a very advanced Native American tribe in that they created the Iroquois
The Mohawk tribe was fierce. They were located in upstate New York to Southern Quebec and Eastern Ontario. The people of the Mohawk tribe lived in villages of longhouse, these were made out of wood as the frames with animals fur and elm tree’s bark. The would eat the fish and any animals they caught with their weapons including bow and arrows, knives, and clubs, also they ate a lot of corn, beans, and squash, that's what they grew. The leader of tribes name is Thayendangea also known as Joseph Brant, he made the rules. The Mohawk’s had to fight their neighboring tribes for their dominance of the beaver fur trade, and they won. They did not really have a good relationship with other tribes. Overall the Mohawk tribe was warlike, they

Did you know that the Haida peoples live on a group of islands called the Queen Charlotte Islands today? There are multiple types of native american tribes living in Canada and the area around it. Some of those tribes are the Haida, Iroquois, Inuit, and more! This essay will be about three of the Native American tribes from Canada, the Inuit, Haida, and Iroquois. I will be speaking to you about how the tribes are alike and how each tribe is unique from one another. Such as, the Haida are the only ones, in this essay, who live on islands. As I said, I will be speaking to you about the similarities and differences between the Inuit, Haida, and Iroquois.
The Iroquois nations, one of the oldest and most prestigious tribes in the history of all Native Americans. In this paper I will be showing why the Iroquois ended up siding with the English through the French and Indian, and Revolutionary wars through factors of colonization. I will also be showing some features of their culture, considering the iroquois are not well known in the western United States, and discussing the fall of the once great tribes. The main reason I 've chosen the Iroquois is because of my own prior knowledge of the Iroquois, and their relationship to lacrosse. I started playing lacrosse my freshman year of highschool. The very first thing I learned, before any stick skills or any basics of the game, was the history of it. Our coach insisted that we knew the history and the culture of the game, and that we respected it. I was intrigued by how interesting the game was. The game was made as a form of war. Lacrosse was sometimes even referred to as “Little brother of war”. It would be called this because injury, even death were common during a lacrosse game. When two tribes had a disagreement, but didn 't feel the need to have a legitimate war, the opposing tribes would send their best warriors to the battlefield and play a lacrosse game. Games would be played to a score of 5-7, but considering how long the fields could be, these games could take hours, days even, however long it took for one of the tribes to win,
Iroquois is an indigenous group that is known as Haudenosaunee or “people of the longhouse.” The Iroquois form five original tribes in 1570: Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, |Senecas, which is called the Five Nations. However, in the eighteenth century, the Tuscaroras joined the Five Nations and formed the Six Nations. Iroquois provide for themselves by hunting, fishing, gathering wild berries and they grow corn, beans, squash, and pumpkins. In addition, Iroquois women had equal status with men and were responsible for choosing the chiefs of their tribe. Presently, the originals Five Nations live on well-populated reservations as well as in off-reserve communities in the United States and Canada
The Iroquois had many interesting religious beliefs that were very important to their society and lifestyle. For example, according to Khaleel Mohammed, their religion was characterized by a monotheistic belief in an all-powerful creator known as the “Great Spirit.” (Mohammed, 24) They also believed in a brother of the Great Spirit, who was the evil minded brother whose specific purpose was to cause evil. (Mohammed, 25) Since they believe in spirits and things that are beyond our world, it would explain why the False Face Society fits into their belief system. The legend of the False Face is that a spirit medicine man, who had healing powers, encountered a stranger who he challenged to move a mountain. The stranger was unable too, but the medicine man did, but in doing so he hit the stranger with the mountain and disfigured
To start off I am gonna tell you a few little things about the cherokee tribe. The cherokee tribe mainly lived up in the mountains, mostly around a river and some land to live and grow crops on. They would have 2 different types of houses for the summer and the winter. The summer homes would be open to get fresh air inside so it would not be as hot, the winter homes would be totally different they would have thick walls made of things such as grass and clay or otherwise called a daub. Their daily lives were mainly hunting, fishing, cooking, cleaning, or anything else that involved creating or building. The cherokee people would call them self the real people because they thought that they were the real native americans. Most of the cherokee
The Iroquois Confederacy, an association of six linguistically related tribes in the northeastern woodlands, was a sophisticated society of some 5,500 people when the first white explorers encountered it at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The 1990 Census counted 49,038 Iroquois living in the United States, making them the country's eighth most populous Native American group. Although Iroquoian tribes own seven reservations in New York state and one in Wisconsin, the majority of the people live off the reservations. An additional 5,000 Iroquois reside in Canada, where there are two Iroquoian reservations. The people are not averse to adopting new technology when it is
The Iroquois are a Native American tribe but actually its six tribes that all merged together that it created one big tribe. The names of the original tribes that merged into the Iroquois are called the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Tuscarora, and Seneca. The Iroquois lived in the northeastern part of the United States. They mostly farmed but they did fish and hunt. One thing I liked was that the left the settlement when the soil got bad.
The Iroquois myth story is based on how the universe was created. This story is introduced with "sky people" living on a floating island. The woman in the story lived on the island, falls down to the water below and creates the earth and the sky with the assistance of the "sky people" who turned into animals. She eventually ended up having twin sons who created the rest of the world. They synchronized the seasons, created animals and all of the remaining aspects of the world. One of the son is good and the other is evil. They both created a balance of ease and happiness with difficulty and hardships. Obviously, this story of creation is a myth because it explains how the earth and sky are first non-existent and then created through the steps
“Five arrows shall be bound together very strong, and each arrow shall represent one nation” (Dekanawida 51). This concept of unity was found throughout the Iroquois constitution. Written around 1570, it laid out the foundation of government for the Iroquois nation. The culture, beliefs, and history of the Iroquois tribe can be seen throughout the “Iroquois Constitution.”

1). The reason for the construction of the Iroquois confederacy, or the league of the Iroquois, (Haudenosaunee) was the impeding factor of disunity between the tribes. Hienwatha, a Mohawk Iroquois, lived in Ontario and observed the disunity between the Iroquois tribes. In an attempt to unify the nations, he approached rival tribes and argued the benefits of unification. Initially, his idea is shut down by the elders of each tribe. The changing climate that started to occur, however, increased confrontations between tribes. Hienwatha yet again tries to explain to the Iroquois people about the possibility of peace and is rejected again. He then alludes the nations to a weaved belt of wampum shells which supposedly illustrated the connectedness of the five Iroquois nations. He traveled among the nations, of which all then supported the idea of unity, and was able to form a seemingly impenetrable force.
This chapter offers a brief, though insightful, overview of Iroquois history, and traditional beliefs and societal structure. Men and women worked together to survive, men hunting or fishing and when working the fields and foraging. Families lived together in longhouse and the eldest female of a line was the dominant figure within the longhouse. Although, ideally, a husband would live with his wife’s family, it seems that did not always occur. Divorce was common, and often fathers did not live in the same longhouse as their children. Children often shared a close relationship to their fathers, however, it was often their mother and an uncle who raised the children.
