The two short stories The Story of An Hour, written by Kate Chopin and The Interlopers, by Saki, are both remarkably interesting, and thought provoking.
The setting, characters, and conflict are all very different, yet similar in some ways.
Setting has a major impact on a story; it sets the theme and mood or feeling.
In The Story of An Hour, the mood is hopeful, serene and joyful.
“She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with new spring life.” Speaks of hopefulness and rebirth
“There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other.” and “The delicious breath of rain was in the air.” are both lovely images filled with peace.
On the contrary, The Interlopers has quite a different setting and mood, filled with suspense and fear.
“In a forest of mixed growth somewhere on the eastern spurs of the Carpathians, a man stood one winter night watching and listening, as though he waited for some beast of the woods to come within the range of his vision, and, later, of his rifle.” This scene feels frightening and suspenseful, making the reader interested to read more.
“He strayed away by himself from the watchers whom he had placed in ambush on the crest of the hill, and wandered far down the steep slopes amid the wild tangle of undergrowth, peering through the tree trunks and listening through the whistling and skirling of the wind and the restless beating of the
All parts of a story from its events to its result are based around a setting. Showing that a setting is the foundation of all stories and events. This is just like how the setting of the book Code Orange by Caroline B. Cooney affects the plot of the story. Cooney’s book is about a teenager, Mitty Blake, who lives in New York City. Mitty is doing a biology paper, in which his topic is smallpox, an incurable disease. While researching, Mitty finds smallpox scabs and foolishly plays around with them, which puts him in a problem of whether or not he has smallpox. In the novel, Code Orange the setting affects the plot because it shapes Mitty’s lifestyle, shows how major the impact would be if Mitty had smallpox, and the amount of independence that
Setting is very important because without the setting there is no initial story. As a reader a person cannot read a story without it having some sort of time frame or having a reference to where the story took place. The setting also shows that the characters in this story have to undergo different problems than other people in the world for example, “…complaining about the drought
The interlopers is a story where 2 main characters fight over a family feud and they eventually come to terms with each other. They hated each other since they were little children. When both men met each other in the woods a thunder struck a tree near them and trap them both. One of the men realized it was a waste of time and energy trying to fight with the other man and tried to make friends with him. They come to a agreement to be friends and not enemies and wait for their men to come and save them. As they wait for one of their groups of men to save them they see in the distance wolves are heading towards
During a summer day in the plains, a member of the Apache tribe, Adahy, was hunting a wild deer with the intention of killing it to satisfy his urge to hunt. Adahy was known to kill for sport, and leave the corpse of the animal he killed to rot. As the deer bounded off into the woods, Adahy’s overwhelming bloodlust caused him to go after it. After he lost sight of the deer, he realized that he did not realize he didn’t know where in the deep woods he was. Hoping he would find his way, he walked in the direction he thought he came from. Soon night time began to fall, and he began to succumb to the feelings of hunger and cold.
1969: Setting is the physical environment in which action occurs. It includes time and place. In many novels and plays, setting is used significantly. For examples, the author may employ it as a motivating force in human behavior, as a reflection of the state of mind of characters, or as a representation of the values held by characters. Choose a novel or a play in which setting is important and write an essay in which you explain the uses the author makes of it. Choose your illustrations from works of recognized literary merit. Do not merely summarize the plot.
The Story of an Hour and The Interlopers are both interesting stories about death. Both stories contain the subject of death but The Interlopers is suspenseful while The Story of an Hour is just sad. Even though The Story of an Hour and The Interlopers are written on two different topics they are still similar, but they both have their differences. In the story The Interlopers death is an event that no one wants or expects to happen. In the story of an hour death is a surprise but it is not unnatural.
The short story “The Interlopers” by Saki demonstrates the ironic aura of man vs. nature, and man vs. man. Hector Hugh Munro, pen named Saki, was one of the most popular short story writers during the pre-World War I British literature era. He wrote many stories and is often referred to as a highly under rated author for British literature. His war experiences were apparent in the novellas that he wrote, and often gave readers a gloomy, disturbed feeling. Other stories by Saki include: “Gabriel-Ernest”, “The Toys of Peace”, and “The Storyteller”. These short stories specifically illustrate horror, and the advantage of living life outside of the box. The three predominant literary techniques in Saki’s “The Interlopers”
The Interlopers: Organic tension is built by atmosphere, dialogue, and subtle set up of the closing reveal, "Ulrich had banded together his foresters to watch the dark forest, not in quest of four-footed quarry, but to keep a lookout for the prowling thieves whom he suspected of being afoot from across the land boundary. The roebuck, which usually kept in the sheltered hollows during a storm wind, were running like driven things tonight, and there was movement and unrest among the creatures that were wont to sleep through the dark hours.” The
The birds sang in more cheerful notes, and the leaves began to bud forth on the trees. Happy, happy earth! Fit habitation for gods, which, so short a time before, was bleak, damp, and unwholesome. My spirits were elevated by the enchanting appearance of nature; the past was blotted from my memory, the present was tranquil, and the future glided by bright rays of hope and anticipations of joy (Shelley 101).
The environments of these two stories are opposites. “The Interlopers” is set in a rugged forest in the Carpathian mountains. The atmosphere is cold, dark, and desolate on a “wind-scourged winter night”(Saki). On the other hand “The Story of an Hour” takes place in a large city. The atmosphere is bright and sunny with the trees, “all aquiver with the new spring life”(Chopin). The physical state of the characters in the two stories are also opposites. For most of the time, the characters in
The setting creates the enviornment for the entire story, the time and the place. Every single part of the story revolves around this. What the characters look like, how they talk to eachother, where they live, what is going on around them. The main conflict is even determined by the time period and where in the world it takes place. For example, the story "The Cask of Amontillado" is set in Paris, France around the rennaissance era. but theres more to the setting than just that. "It was about dusk one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that i encountered with my friend." This describes more about the enviornment around the characters in the beggining of the story. Then the setting shifts,"Its walls had been lined with
I lay low to the ground, and quickly make my way across the moonlight stretch of grass. Looking back, I can see the black suited wolf has rounded the corner, and has also taken up whistling a jaunty tune. Sighing, I reach the forest’s
Interloper, someone who is in a place or group but is not wanted by the other people there. In this story, the main characters are Ulrich and Georg, and their families hated each other by about the right of attribution of the area of the land. Both of them think that the land is belong to them and another family is thieves. They have a lot of argument and fights base on it. From the article that I found that although they were overwhelmed by the huge and heavy tree. They still argue at the beginning, and they are arguing about who’s men will come first and kill the other family’s members. At the end, Ulrich invited Georg drink the best wine together, and after they clam down. They realized that they do not need to be so rude to each other.
The tickling sensation of heat bathing his face forced him to slowly open his eyes. The sun’s golden rays stunned him blurring his vision as he quickly turned away. As his eyes adjusted, he was surprised to find the absence of his father. His heart started to pound and all the confidence and security that he had built up melted in the space of a few seconds. He jumped up flinging his sleeping bag on to the ground and looked around taking note of his surroundings. To him, it felt as if the trees were suddenly sent out to attack him like stealthy assassins gaining on him as they moved side to side from the winds steady breeze. The faint noise of bugs and animals chattering sounded like the grunt of a predator before it hunts its prey. A colossal cloud
The Story of the Hour by Kate Chopin and The Interlopers by Saki are short stories that will leave you on your toes till the very end. Both stories deal with death, freedom, independence, and power. But, in those very ways they are alike, they are very different. While one is trying to be free by letting someone go, the other is trying to be free by forgiving someone and letting someone in a new friendship. The characters from both short stories are trying to have a new start and let go of a life time situation.
