The Influence of UNIV103 on My Success I will start by saying that it has been a pleasure working with all of on our discussion board topics. I hope that all of you enjoyed learning the skills we will need to attain our desired goals. This course has shown me that I’m on the track towards my success and exactly what I’ll have to continue doing to make it there. My life has been impacted greatly by this experience, and I will work to cast light on just a few of the ways that this course has influenced my daily life. Although I find joy in being an electrician, my career field is too unstable, and I need a better state of financial security. Changing professions is a big risk, but at this point I feel I have more to gain rather …show more content…
I also feel that all of the topics that explained proper communications are very valuable to me. I have always struggled with communication, because I have been a shy, quiet person all of my life. However, I have always loved written communication, because it gives me time to think about what I should say to someone. It is hard for me to interject when I’m engaged in a conversation, because I hate being rude to people. Consequently, when I talk with people in person or verbally, I have the tendency to let them control the conversation. On the other hand, this also makes me an excellent listener and helps me to assess people’s motives behind what they say. This course has taught me the importance of attuning professional verbal communication with professional written communication and listening skills. The last on my list, yet certainly not the least, of important subjects I have learned from this course are all the topics that pertain to goal setting. I’ve had bad experiences with managing my goals in the past. When I was 19 years old, I enrolled in I.T.T. Technical Institute, because I wanted to learn more about electronics, and get a career in research and development. My goal was to become a computer designer and make systems that were more user friendly, yet after receiving my Associates degree, I was very irresponsible, and my dream slowly faded away. Although I had a couple of interesting jobs after college, I never found a stable
As soon as this course started, I realized that there was a lot for me to learn. I communicate with many individuals at work and in my personal life. I have always felt that my communications were clearly received. However, I realized that each receiver of my communication is different. Joseph A. Devito explains that each person is unique; each person’s communications are unique (Devito 9). When at work I deal with many employees concerning various matters. The employees typically come to me because they need help with a matter that I am knowledgeable in. I can usually answer their questions quickly, and with great detail. The part I fail to consider is that the employee is not as knowledgeable as me, and may not understand some of the terms and processes I am referring to. And for fear of appearing to not understand, an employee will just agree with me and leave. That employee may leave my office not fully understanding everything I said. This miscommunication is
I believe this course is going to be an enrinched experience for us all. Good job to us all for taking the steps in adding another degree to our walls or desks in order to accomplish our career goals. I understand this is a large but I do hope to speak, even better, network with the majority of you. I wish you all the best on your educational voyage.

Effective communication skills are crucial to my success in both my personal and professional life and this course has helped me tremendously of becoming a more confident speaker. I’ve learned various communication techniques such as listening, active listening, verbal and nonverbal skills to connect with audiences once I speak in front of a large group of people.
This was by far the most challenging course that I have encountered while obtaining my Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from UCMO. That is not a negative comment as this course has actually impacted me professionally more than any other course I’ve taken to date. This course has taken more time to complete the assignments, more of my attention to detail, and more of my creativity. The last point was the best part about this course. I consider myself to be fairly creative and this course definitely allowed me to do that while bringing my somewhat odd personality to a professional forum. For this I am grateful. Let’s get to the good stuff, shall we?
Before taking any courses, this student had a general idea of how communication is an essential component in any working environment. After taking many courses in the Polk State Bachelor's program, the course GEB 3213 (Advanced Communications in Business) was a course that enlightened this student on the essential skills and concepts that are necessary to know when working in a professional environment. This course taught this student how to be able to structure business communications for maximum effect through style, tone, and grammar, how to comprehend the strategies used to construct the types of business messages commonly used in the business environment, for example, like how to write a professional email. Also this course taught this student how to effectively research and organize information into effective business reports and visual presentations. Not only did this course set this student up for a bright future in the business world through means of communication, but this course also helped this student's writing when it came to completing the rest of her bachelors courses in the this program. The knowledge and skills that this student learned in this course will be essential key components that are necessary to have when working in a professional corporate
Attitude : My attitude toward completing this course is energetic but at the same time nerve-wracking. I am excited to finally gain insight into a subject that interested me least. Although, the nerve-wracking part, because I am a mediocre student. I tend not to do well in certain subjects which doesn’t interest me. However, I think that this course, will help me overcome tough obstacles.
Communication is a very important part of our relationships. We use it order to have both our physical and instrumental needs met. Having the means by which to communicate gives us the opportunity to form and maintain meaningful relationships in our lives. By effectively communicating with others, we're able to understand their opinions of us. And we're also given the opportunity of sharing and expressing our own thoughts, ideas, and values to them as well. This course has given me a greater understanding of effective communication as it relates to all types of relationships and problems. However, there are some relationship problems that communication just cannot fix. For example, in some relationships people “fall out of love” with each other.
Studying communications this semester I learned it is more than public speaking, but is focused on how to effectively share opinions or information to broaden ones perspective. In my communications class we focused on listening skills, interpersonal communications, and small group communication. Listening skills were developed when we did speech critiques on our group members. In addition, we listened to other speeches or Netflix shows to analyze communication methods. In class, we examined what makes up interpersonal communications including nonverbal skills, verbal skills, and development of ideas using evidence. In addition, we worked on own skills by writing and delivering 3 speeches on a topic of our choice that we are passionate about. This helped me define how I communicate my own opinions to others. Small group communication was matured when we worked on a group speech on how to improve articulation skills. I had to work on speaking up and
Some of my expectations for taking this course are to gain more knowledge in regards to communication within an organization and individuals. Even though I have been in an Administrative Assistant role the majority of my career there are communication challenges within the department as well as between departments. This stems primarily from everyone’s unique personalities or agendas which at times do not align with the task at hand. In addition, there are also other influences which influence the way staff interact with one another. This can include budget restrains of a project or missing the required deadline. The way in which an individual handles the stress and pressure of these two aspects also affects how they relate with one another.
Before this communications class I knew that I had strengths and weaknesses in my communication, but I did not know what areas I was effective and ineffective in. From my scores from the Interpersonal Competency Scale test, I was able to reflect upon which areas I strive in and which areas need more practice and attention in everyday conversation. In brief, I excel in empathy and appropriateness, and struggle with effectiveness, adaptability, and conversational management. From these scores I can reflect and analyze how and why I got those scores and what I can do to better my interpersonal communication.
I would like to say that this course has been as much invigorating as it was time consuming. Definitely, not one of the best subjects I've ever had, however, the most challenging of anything in my life I have taken up to now. It is one that will stick and be in my head on occasion that is for sure. It’s been a surreal experience or daunting at times trying to revise or clarify any questions you may have asked. I have enjoyed reading all of the replies or post with others and where each of you stood as well on your own selected topics.
Most of the skills we discussed in this course I would say I already knew about, so much of this was reinforcing what I already knew along with adding a few more terms to describe some of the communication process. I think the most important thing that was reinforced was the role that listening plays in all communication, whether professional or personal. In the workplace, if you listen and pay attention to what your employer likes, you might be able to get a promotion or something similar by doing whatever it is he/she likes. Listening in the workplace can also be used to help maintain a good work environment; if you know that someone is having some kind of conflict, you can help to remedy that conflict and restore a good work environment. Where this is most important (I would say) is in personal relationships. Being able to not only talk but listen to the other person in the relationship is key to any healthy relationship going smoothly and keeping both people in the relationship happy. Listening comes into play in some less dire situations also: similar to doing what your employer likes, if you listen to the other person in the relationship when they talk about something that they like, you will know what it is that they like and will be able to do/get whatever that may be. Where communication is most important in relationships is in disagreements; if two people are able to get through a disagreement in a way that satisfies both people and minimizes hostility, it shows both maturity and good communication skills.
Professional communication identifies with the various forms of speaking, listening, writing, and responding, whether, in person, or through electronics. Efficient communication is essential in personal and business settings; poor communication can produce short- and long-term resentments and shrinks’ productivity. We often disregard the system of communicating when using it but observing how you forward and interpret messages lessens complications and strengthens relationships. We learn to communicate from birth, without examining it as a procedure or process. If you start the communication, you are the sender, channeling communications to a recipient. Drafting and tailoring your correspondence to the audience or recipient so that they can comprehend the message. The
Communications is defined as the “act of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else;” in other words, communication (Merriam-Webster, 2015). Communication is something that many people overlook and argue to be unessential to learn about; I have to argue otherwise. Communication is the thing that allows us to express our emotions, feelings, and opinions to others in a variety of ways. There are multitudes of ways that communication can be interpreted ranging, but not limited to nonverbal communication to systems of symbols (Survey of Communication Study/Chapter 2 - Verbal Communication, 2000). During this course, I have acquired a comprehensive understanding of the meaning of Communications, and how it is interpreted into our daily lives. Not only that, but during week two of this course, we set personal goals that we wanted to achieve by the end of the quarter. Being a Nursing major, communication is crucial, especially concerning that the majority of my time will be consisted of talking and working with patients. Not only can I say that my personal goals have been achieved, but I took more out of this class than was expected.
