I ran an experiment with Alex and Kyriece, both having to do with their level of understanding conservation of mass. Conservation of mass is a test that helps to see if a child is in a preoperational phase, or in concrete phase of developing. The most famous test is placing two lines of an equal number coins in front of a child. The lines need to be made of the same size coins and must be arranged to be the same length. Then ask the child if one line has more coins in the line, or if they had the same amount. Then stretch the second line of coins to make the line longer, but without adding any more coins. Then ask which line has more coins, the first line, that has the original length, or the second line, that has been stretched out to be longer. Due to this, I was able to recognize that children probably have an easier time distinguishing a pattern that has to do with color rather than shape or size. I’m guessing that color is an easier concept to comprehend rather than the shape or size of an object. However, I also was able to learn that shapes are easier for children to recognize. I show both boys a colorful bowl of marbles, then I ask Jon to count out 20 marbles and place them in a short, chubby cup as Josh watches. I then have Jon count out 20 more marbles and put them in a second short, chubby cup. Now, both boys can see the 20 marbles in the cup. I ask Josh to put them side by side. I ask, “Josh do they look like they have the same amount in each cup?” He replies, “yes”.

Angelina is five years old. For the first test Angelina said the smaller container had more water in it, “because the waters way up here (pointing to the smaller container) but it’s down her in the other one (pointing to the wider container)”. The second experiment she caid the flattened playdough had more because “it’s a big circle”. The third experiment Angelina said that both the stack and the row had the same amount “because 5 and 5”. It surprised me that she made sure to count both sections unlike Kyng who only counted the row. The fourth and last test Angelina said the string that was balled “because if you stretch it out it's the biggest one”. Her response to this question surprised me because I assumed that she would answer that the string that was already stretched out would be longer because it is visibly longer at that moment. When I asked Angelina, “Why does the sunshine” she responded, “When the sun goes up that means it’s time to wake up.” When I asked her, “Why is there snow?” she responded, “because when it’s Christmas sometimes snow comes out”. This also did not surprise me because I have had conversations before we started the experiment she had squinted her eyes and we were talking about what we could see and what she could see, so I assumed that she would have that answer. Often, elementary school counselors are reluctant to suggest play therapy and have perceived barriers to its efficacy. This study surveyed 259 members of the American School Counselor Association about those barriers to implementing play therapy, and the potential solutions that could be used to overcome any reluctance. The typical barriers are logical: training, administration, time, resources, and space. It is not that the counselors as a whole do not believe in play therapy, it is that they cannot always find appropriate resources to implement the tool. The study raises the awareness that in the contemporary school in which budgets and resources are extremely tight, more training, educating faculty and administrators, and even using alternative or personal funds to purchase play therapy materials are often necessary to help students.

The hypothesis for this project is “ If the Effect of Preference of Colored Plates is green then, the Amount of Cookies Eaten will increase.” This project is based on the statement that a red plate can warn the conscious to not eat the substance that is on that plate. The science fair project is going to try to show that statement to be right. The project is interesting because of the science behind the statement; that a person’s conscious could relate a red plate to a stop sign, which is also red. Why is it that a four year old thinks there is more of water in a tall narrow glass than there is in a short broader glass, when both glasses contain the same amount of water? Isaac was able to agree on each task that initially all the quantities were the same, but was easily influenced once the pennies were moved, the water was placed into a different size glass and the clay was rolled into a different size shape. He thought the row of pennies that was spread out had more pennies, the glass that was taller had more water and the clay that was rolled out had more clay. When asked why he thought there was more, he used concrete physical descriptions about what he saw such as the glass was "taller" or of a different "size" and that the clay was "longer". Conversely, it was not going well at the start of the activity because Jenny tried to create mixture colours then the mixture colours became dark coulours which could not see whether the second layer was sits on the bottom layer. The types of toys children play with can affect how they develop. Toys can help or hinder a child’s development in intelligence, social skills and personality. Certain characteristics may be genetically entwined in a human being, but some characteristics and behaviors can be learned, from parents, surroundings, and the toys with which a youngster plays. Elise Moore, author of “How Do Toys Aid Development”, stated “if play is the work of the child, toys are the child’s tools” (Moore, 2).

What is play? Play is “a recreational activity; especially the spontaneous activity of children.” (Webster, 2010) Play is such a basic function and daily routine in a child’s life. Although the roles of play and the types of play change though age, it all incorporates in the growth and development of a child.

Piaget claims that before the beginning of this stage, children 's ideas about different objects, are formed and dominated by the appearance of the object. For example, there appears to be more blocks when they are spread out, than when they are in a small pile. During the Concrete Operational Stage, children gradually develop the ability to 'conserve ', or learn that objects are not always the way that they appear to be. This occurs when children are able to take in many different aspects of an object, simply through looking at it. Children are able to begin to imagine different scenarios, or 'what if ' something was to happen. This is because they now have more 'operational ' thought. Children are generally first able to conserve ideas about objects with which they are most comfortable. Once children have learnt to conserve, they learn about 'reversibility '. This means that they learn that if things are changed, they will still be the same as they used to be. For example, they learn that if they spread out the pile of blocks, there are still as many there as before, even though it looks different!

This understanding that objects and events can be evaluated in areas such as weight and length begins well before children start school (McDonald, 2013). Three year old children begin to understand how long events may last. They also start to understand weight but don’t know how to measure it (McDonald, 2013).
