Imagine if you only read one or two books in your lifetime. This was the case in the 1400s. When there were only thirty thousand books throughout Europe. During the Middle Ages, before the printing press, bookmarking was slow because the only methods of making books were woodblock printing and writing by hand. Books were expensive and rare. Gutenberg's father was quite wealthy and he bought Johanne Gutenberg books and he read them quickly. Even though his father could afford more books, there were not many to buy and satisfy Gutenberg. Since Gutenberg thought it was wrong that books were so difficult to obtain, this motivated him to later invent the printing press.
Johan Gutenberg was born in 1395 in Mainz, Germany. He was a German blacksmith known for inventing the printing press. His printing press has been widely considered the most important invention of the modern era because it made it easier for people to get knowledge since there wasn't many books back then. He was born into a modest merchant family in Mainz, Germany. He was the third son of Freile zum Gensfleisch and his second wife, Else Wirick zum Gutenberg, whose maiden name Johann later adopted. He apprenticed as a goldsmith while living in Mainz. He didn't make much money but he had wealthy parents to give him money if he needed it. Gutenberg had a passion for reading. With more people having Bibles the church got angry because they did not have as much power. He also Invented the worlds first printing press. Without the printing press he would have not been able to make copies of the bible or copies Books.
