Throughout history many people, such as politicians, officials, and generals, have been noted to have molded the United States, neglecting the fact that workers have also played an important role in shaping this nation’s history. During the 1870s to the 1930s, laborers faced many hardships; they had trouble keeping their jobs, had their wages decreased, and were forced to work sixty-hour weeks without insurance. Over time, workers began to feel aggravated by their employers’ demands and began to voice their opinions. Only by forming into unions and standing up to what employers’ thought was “freedom” in the workplace were the laborers able to change working conditions more favorable for them.

Labor unions are an organized association of employees who come together who would all like to better the relationship with their employer. They have power to impact things such as wages, job training and other work related issues. So why would employees want to start and organize a union? Well, one reason employees would want to start a union it’s usually because employees are dissatisfied with something in their job and they would like to fix it. The ‘things’ they would like to fix could range from something as basic as wages and to job security (Hunter 1).

“Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards and “The American Crisis” by Thomas Paine are two persuasive works that tried to sway the opinions and actions of their readers. Both authors used powerful writing to illustrate what would happens to those who did not change. While Edward’s piece focused on religion and Paine’s on war, both discussed the reasons why people should conform to the views expressed by the two authors. Though vastly different in their nature and audience, the two texts were featured around the same idea: people need to change. In the works, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and “The American Crisis,” Edwards and Paine use the persuasive appeals ethos, pathos, and logos, and literary devices such as simile, metaphor, imagery, and personification to persuade their American audience.

Labor unions’ principal objectives are to increase wages, shorten work days, achieve greater benefits, and improve working conditions.
