I chose the Parse Theory of Human becoming because I feel that this theory gives the patient strength, complexity and a strong internal locus. A person is free to choose their own meaning in a situation and interpret the meaning as freely as desired. This theory relates to the professional nursing practice because it allows the nurse to see the patient as a whole; spiritually, biologically, sociologically, and psychologically.(Taylor & Canney, 2011) As nurses, we perform a holistic assessment and provide care to the patient’s idea of health and wellness; a person is more than just the sum of their parts. I found this theory particularly interesting because I think it is patient centered in a unique way; other theories point out what the nurse can do to offer themselves to a patient. This theory draws attention to all the many layers of a person and health is more than just the absence of illness. Humans are complex beginnings and this theory, by Rosemarie Parse, reminds us that nursing is a science and an art. I know for myself, I can become lost in tasks and I have to remind myself that each patient is a person that came from a completely different walk of life. To summarize this theory in my own words I would say that as nurses we need to acknowledge that patients are shaped from their experiences and that they are more than just an illness. The two theories that have helped to form my personal perspective on nursing are Erickson; and Rogers. Helen Erickson’s model is based on caring for an individual patient based on their own unique needs and perspective (Nursing Theories and Models, 2017). Erickson’s model took concepts from several other theorists such as Maslow, Padget, Seyle, and Lazarus and combined them to create a nursing model that takes care of each individual patient based on their needs ( Reed, 2017). This theory helps me to be more cognizant of the individual needs of my patient, not all patients regardless of disease process are the same. Each patient may have different underlying factors or circumstances that affect their health and current situation. A nursing theory that has influenced my professional nursing practice is Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring. In this theory she addresses how nurses care for their patients. Caring is the essence of the nursing profession and is a relationship formed between the nurse and the patient. In Watson’s theory she believed that caring could assist the patient to gain control in their own health care, become educated, and in the end find health. Watson focused on the patient’s mind, body, and soul and this is the aspect of her theory that I try to use in my professional practice. Nursing was, for my sixteen year old self, taking care of the sick. Little did I know the complexities of that definition. Still, taking care of the sick was interesting enough to make nursing my major. I started practicing nursing years ago. However, I still struggle defining and explaining my profession to others. I usually start by differentiating nursing from medicine. Nurses see patients as humans rather than a disease that needs treatment (Zaccagnini & White, 2014, p. 15). However, as I advance my career, I must actively incorporate nursing theory into my practice. Nursing theory gives a foundation to understand patients and their health problems better. The use of nursing theory provides a framework to evaluate nurses’ interventions on a higher standard (Zaccagnini & White, 2014). Kenney described five steps to follow once the decision to include nursing theory has being made. This paper will explore the process of applying the Kenney’s five steps into my practice.
Nursing is as much science as it is a study in the human condition. Combining caring and the notion of human flourishing allows the nurse sharpen her understanding of patients’ needs by observing and understanding herself (Husted & Husted, 2008). A nurse is able to better anticipate the needs of her patients by noting similarities and differences between the two of them. With caring in the nursing corner, even under less-than-ideal conditions, one can still create havens of hope, nourishment, and the possibility for flourishing (MacCulloh, 2011).

It has enabled facilities across the nation to achieve a higher level of patient care due to its ability to identify the needs of each of the stages of a professional nurse’s career progression.
Throughout the history of nursing, there have been many nursing theorists who have each made significant contributions towards the shaping of nursing knowledge. Each of these theorists have differing perspectives and interpretations of how each domain of the nursing metaparadigm fit into their respective theories. The four domains of the nursing metaparadigm are: person, environment, health and illness, and nursing. The purpose of this reflection is to provide an overview of the domains related to the metaparadigm of nursing as well as to introduce this author’s perspective on their developing personal philosophy of nursing. In this paper, the author will take a closer look at each of these areas, how they are individually defined, and how they each fit into the nursing metaparadigm as a whole. At the conclusion of this overview, readers will be introduced to how these theorists and their perspectives have enabled this author to begin to create their own philosophy of nursing.

The caring, supportive, sympathetic features of nursing, is immeasurable. Theories are essential to have. They provide a description of what nurses do and give meaning and purpose. When nursing theories are developed this new knowledge can greatly impact the future of nursing practice (McCrae, 2012).
I knew there are multiple nursing theories from previous discussion. However, I did not realize there were so many that I would be interested in. Some were much more philosophical than I was comfortable with, yet others captivated me. For the purpose of this assignment, I decided to look more closely at the Theory of the Nurse as Wounded Healer by Dr. Marion Conti-O’Hare. The notion of a wounded healer originated with Greek mythology but was coined by psychologist, Dr. Carl Jung in 1951(Daneault, 2008). Dr. Jung believed that “the disease of the soul could be the best possible form of training for a healer” and that “only a wounded [healer] could heal effectively” (Daneault, 2008).
