While reading Romeo and Juliet, it was evident that the play was acted over a short period of time. The speed with which the events occur are the most important part of Romeo and Juliet as all of the events are connected to the speed. Speed is the theme because they didn’t have enough time to think things through, they didn’t have enough time to plan different and better solutions and the protagonists rushed into everything. Because the speed of the play was important, William Shakespeare made sure that the characters had little time to think about their actions and decisions to add drama.
The speed of the events were so fast leaving little time to think things through. Friar Laurence tells Romeo that he moved on from Rosaline to Juliet to fast. Romeo claimed he loved daughter Capulet even though they just met and they didn’t really know each other. (2.3.57) Romeo killed Tybalt the same day he was married to Juliet leaving her a wife at home because the Prince said anymore fights shall end in death. He didn’t think about his actions and the

Romeo was unsatisfied with the time spent with Juliet and wanted more, the nurse was on her way and Romeo didn’t want to get caught. As a result, when Romeo asks Juliet to marry him, she agrees so they can be together, but marriage isn’t the solution for everything. (2.2.25) Juliet avoided marriage with Paris by going to Friar for a solution. Juliet agrees to taking a potion with many doubts nut, as this was her only solution at the time, she followed through with it. (3.5.241) They wanted to be together, dead or alive, so immediately after seeing the other dead or supposedly dead, they killed themselves without waiting or gathering more information as closure.(5.1.60) Because the solutions made without very much thought, were effective immediately, the events were taking place at a very fast
To think or not to think; that is the question. In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Frair warns Romeo, “wisely and slow, they stumble that run fast”. Many people tend to not slow down to think through their decisions, adopting the “You Only Live Once” motto. “Living in the moment” or moving too fast could be potentially dangerous. Romeo and Juliet moved too he fast and they ended up dead. If you move too fast in modern life you could get in serious trouble and in some cases, lose your life as so it happened to Romeo and Juliet.
One of Shakespeare’s motifs from the story Romeo and Juliet is rushing. A way that Shakespeare uses rushing is when Juliet is waiting on Romeo to come. She wants to see him so very bad because she misses him. She says as an aside, “Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die, / Take him and cut him out in little stars” (Shakespeare, 3.2.21-2). She yearns for Romeo.
One of the main reasons that Romeo and Juliet ends as a tragedy, is haste. Throughout the book, there are many changes of events. Romeo gets over Rosaline, Romeo and Juliet marry, Romeo kills Tybalt, Romeo gets banished from Verona, Juliet
Romeo claimed to be “in love” with another girl named Rosaline, but then as soon as he saw Juliet he said many things such as he had never been in love and more. Next, Romeo acted out of anger, killed Tybalt and got banished from Verona after marrying Juliet. Finally, Romeo had a secret marriage to Juliet that he knew was a Capulet, and instead of telling the families and trying to get them to accept it they hid the marriage until they both died. In conclusion, Friar Laurence was not responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Because Romeo and Juliet were reckless and acted without thinking, they thought death was a better option than losing each other in any way, and Romeo couldn’t
Romeo commited suicide, believing that he would reconcile with Juliet in the afterlife. He was the one who sparked the death of his own life and his love, Juliet’s. Romeo is the reason why they both ended up dead because he was too quick to assume that Juliet was lifeless. As Romeo was in the Capulet’s vault as he apprehended “Beauty’s ensign yet Is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks, And death’s pale flag is not advancèd there” of Juliet’s false cadaver(Shakespeare PAGE NUMBER ACT 5 SCENE 3). If Romeo would have followed his instinct neither Romeo nor Juliet would have ended their own lives so promptly.
As the play starts to end Friar says “A thing like death to, chide away this shame, that cop’st with death himself to scape from it; and if thou darest, I’ll give there remedy.” (Act 4 scene 1 page 65). As friar said this, he was basically telling Juliet he has a way out of this marriage with Paris, but they are too hasty with death, they could've thought of another idea like running away and not having a big trouble at the end. As Romeo sees Juliet in the ending act he does “Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on The dashing rocks thy sea-sick weary bark! Here’s to my love [Drinks] O true apothec’ry, Thy drugs are quick. [kisses her] Thus with a kiss I die. [Dies]” (Act 5 scene 3 Page 80). This reveals that Romeo found Juliet dead and kills himself her his love for her, it also shows that Romeo made a decision way too fast and put no thought in it. But as the play ended Romeo and Juliet kill themselves for each other and ends up to be a really bad
One might believe that fate or destiny is the crucial reasons behind the characters catastrophe. However, it is actually the impulses and the inability to control it which results in the enormous amount of tragedies in this play. In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William shakespeare; Romeo, Juliet and Mercutio are pivotal characters who choose to make decisions on impulses. Haste combined with the dearth of impulse management is the main reason of this play’s several tragic events. If a number of the characters gained the power to carry off their impulsive acts and ponder things through, there would be a better chance that the deaths of lover, Juliet and others may have been avoided. This essay will argue that the idea of haste, and lack of
First, together they decide to get married and they Friar Lawrence marry them. “And there she shall at Friar Lawrence’ cell/ Be shriv’d and married….” (2.4.165-166). Secondly, Romeo then kills Tybalt in an act of vengeance, which causes him to get banished from Verona and furthermore Juliet and cries out “Ha, banishment? be merciful, say ‘death’:” (3.3.12). Thirdly, Juliet decides to take a sleeping potion so she does not have to marry Paris. “O bid me leap, rather than marry Paris,/ From off the battlements of any tower,” (4.1.77-78). Finally, Romeo arrives at the tomb that causes him to kill Paris and find a “dead” Juliet. He then believes “That unsubstantial Death is amorous,” (5.3.103), and he takes the poison and kills himself. If Juliet had woken up a few minutes earlier he would not be dead along with Paris. However she does and stabs herself since one cannot live while the other is
Romeo and Juliet had known each other for a day before they were married, which, even considering the time period, is very fast. An hour into their marriage, Romeo kills Juliet’s cousin Tybalt. Although he killed him to avenge his best friend Mercutio, it was still an incredibly under-thought action, especially since Tyablt would have been executed for murdering Mercutio anyhow. Romeo's vengeance never provided any satisfaction; it just caused more trouble. Because of the murder of Tybalt, the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues had become much more severe.
Romeo has an impulsive habit; it is clearly seen throughout his time in this piece of art. The events leading up to the time spent with Juliet were quick, even quicker to unlove Rosaline. Ending Tybalt's life also Paris's was another example of his impulse decisions. Romeo could have communicated with these people
Early in the play, Romeo and Juliet meet and instantly fall in love. In the infamous balcony scene, they clearly express their love and decide to get married. Juliet says, “Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed. If that thy bend of love be honorable, Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow, By one that I’ll procure to come to thee, Where and what time thou wilt perform the rite, And all my fortunes at thy foot I’ll lay And follow thee my lord throughout the world,” (2.2.149-155). Juliet has confirmed that she wants to marry Romeo the next day so long as he gives her a notice the next day. Romeo and Juliet are so in love that they are willing to rush into this marriage, not truly thinking of what is about to come next. They don’t stop to think about what this marriage will mean for the rivalry between the families and they don’t understand that maybe it isn’t a good idea. If Romeo and Juliet had considered the trouble that this marriage would cause, perhaps they would not have gotten married so quickly. Later, once Romeo has been banished to Mantua and Juliet is told she must marry another guy named Paris, she is distraught and runs to Friar Lawrence. Once there, Friar tells Juliet of a plan that involves her faking her death using a concoction that will make her appear dead. Romeo will then find her and they will be reunited and live their lives together away from their feuding
To start off, Romeo should not have even gone to the Capulet party in the first place, even if it was to spy on Rosaline. As soon as he saw Juliet, he completely forgot about Rosaline. This proves he knows as much about love as Juliet does. After the party he could have just left, but no. He decides to go spy on Juliet like a creep, then climbs her balcony so they can talk and kiss more. The next day he goes to Friar Lawrence and tells him that he is over Rosaline and now he is in love with Juliet. Romeo asks if he will help them. “ In one respect I’ll thy assistant be; ” said by Friar Lawrence ( DBQ : Project , 2013). Romeo then goes and duals Tybalt, and he dies. Romeo is then banished. When this happened, Romeo had already got married to Juliet. Later on, when Romeo finds Juliet, he thinks that she is dead. He could have just waited another minute and she would have woken up, but he went and killed himself. He was so quick he did not even think. After he did this, Juliet woke up and say he was dead so she killed herself because of Romeo’s death.
Wisely and Slow is The Way to go Moving too fast without thinking about the consequences is something everybody does, no matter their age, era, or gender. Moving too quickly has been something people have been doing since the Renaissance era. As humans, we are constantly trying to move as fast as possible to get to the end of the journey, rather than slowing down and taking the time to think things through. When people don’t think, and move fast, bad things always seem to happen.
Throughout the characterization of both Romeo and Juliet, they have both made fast pace-decisions. Firstly, Romeo’s quick transition between his strong love for Rosaline to his immortal love for Juliet is unintelligent. Throughout the first act, Romeo is obsessed with Rosaline Capulet. He says, "the all-seeing sun ne'er saw her match since first the world begun"(1.2.95). This is important because it shows how fast
The world moves so fast, but the haste in people’s decisions lead to dreadful consequences. These haste decisions have become the downfall of the world. This is shown in the play “Romeo & Juliet”, where two star-crossed lovers are forced to keep their love a secret from their families. Also forcing them to get married in secret then to never live together. Shakespeare shows the audience how making hasty decisions may lead to dire consequences through Juliet’s decision to marry Romeo, Juliet’s choice to drink the potion given to her by Friar Lawrence, and Juliet’s decision to kill herself with Romeo’s dagger.
