In the growing age of the internet, it has become easier and easier for students to plagiarize. In many ways plagiarism hasn't changed at all, it is still a shortcut students may take to get a paper or assignment done as fast as possible. It can sometimes be difficult to recognize what plagiarism is and why it is such an inexcusable action. Understanding plagiarism is one key to becoming a better writer: knowing what plagiarism is, the importance of documentation and when to use MLA or APA.
Plagiarism is the theft of someone’s written work and claiming it as your own. “Today, the temptation for students to cheat is even more pervasive, with seemingly every idea about everything just a few finger taps away” (Miller). As it becomes easier to plagiarize it can become harder to distinguish what plagiarism is. Plagiarism can be done on everything from music, images, and videos. Copying someone else’s sentence structures is also considered plagiarism. Plagiarism can have harsh consequences if there is lots of money involved. It is also an extremely serious offense when it comes to academics and if caught you can be expelled from school.
When using another person's words in your own paper you must use proper documentation. By using proper documentation you can utilize another person’s ideas without plagiarizing. It is even possible to self-plagiarize your own work. “Why not? They were my words. I was their author. I assumed I could employ them as I pleased” (Carnett). Taking
People invest and take pride in their contributions; it is unfortunate that someone else could have no consideration and not give credit to whom it is due. Whether people are inclined to plagiarize because they are hesitant to work thoroughly or it has become culturally acceptable still makes it disreputable. Either way this infringement can and will have adverse effects on a person’s personal and professional
Plagiarism is when you take any form of writing and make it your own without giving proper credit to the owner. You can also be plagiarizing if you use some of your old work without the teacher knowing you did so. In universities across America about ¾ of people are involved in some kind of academic dishonesty (Heckler, Rice, and Bryan 229). Many students have different reasons as to why they had to cheat on an assignment and they range from not having enough time, not getting the sufficient information from the teacher or for the assignment, and sometimes some students also say that the teacher almost gives them no choice (Puka). It is disheartening when someone uses your hard work, ideas, songs, literary work, or research without giving you credit. This form of copying, passing off sentences that are not yours, stealing of thoughts, or copyright infringement is called plagiarism. United States law enforces rules to protect intellectual property. You can find more about this information under the Intellectual Property Law. Such property includes books, research papers, journals, poems, songs, music, ideas, portraits, videos, and film. Any intellectual property that is used or included within your professional research must be cited properly to avoid the accusation of plagiarism.
Plagiarism can be easy to do but you can avoid this is by paraphrasing. In the article “Avoiding Plagiarism” by Jennifer Janechek states that “Paraphrasing can be tricky, and sometimes students who mean to paraphrase can unintentionally plagiarize by failing to communicate a source's ideas in their own words.” She informs us that even though paraphrasing is an easy thing to do in order to avoid plagiarism but it is easy to paraphrase something wrong to where it makes it
To plagiarize is to use the work of another and represent it as your own work. The overall concept is simple. Do not copy the work of another and use it as your own. It is commonly understood, although not always adhered to, that a student should not have another write their paper nor should they purchase a pre-written paper and turn it in with their name on it. Many students can lack an understanding of the more subtle aspects of plagiarism though. A common misconception is using the work of another and simply rephrasing it or using quotes around the portion of the work of another but not citing that source. In these cases, a student might not realize that they may be plagiarizing another author.
“To present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source”
Plagiarism has become a massive issue in writing today. With all the technology at a writers fingertips, it can become very tempting to find prefabricated essays readily available online. It is up to the writer to have a sense of integrity to resist the temptation and do the work for themselves. When writing it is important to cite sources and use quotation marks on direct quotes. The writer needs to ensure that direct quotes are not used excessively as it can be interpreted as plagiarism. Direct copying and pasting of information without proper citation is unethical. The writer needs to take information and convert it into their own words.
Plagiarism is when someone copies a someone’s work. People don’t always try to do it. Plagiarism is also a very lazy way to finish a assignment. Plagiarism steals ideas and there are harsh laws if you do. If you do copy someone’s work, give them credit by putting the name of the article you got your information from.
Plagiarism, what it is and how it is avoided are serious questions for all students, especially in a high school English class. Plagiarism may be as simple as a quick copy and paste, nevertheless, there is no denying that it’s not worth it. The University of Minnesota says the following on plagiarism, “Data is meaningless without thoughtful interpretation. This is the basis of education, and is one of the ways new knowledge is developed. Since students are individuals, and since no two students look at the same data or interpret that data exactly the same way, each interpretation is original”(Selzler). Plagiarism is illegal as the expression of original ideas is considered intellectual property and is protected by copyright laws, and are equal to original inventions. Almost all forms of expression fall under copyright protection as long as they are recorded in any way (Plagiarism.org). Although plagiarism has been a problem for ages, it is critical that students

Plagiarism the act of copying someone else’s work and using it as your own without giving that resource credit. Plagiarism is taken very seriously in the academic setting. It is being dishonest with your work and trying to take credit for someone’s hard work and for their accomplishments.
“Copying’ or “borrowing” someone else’s words or ideas may perhaps be the more inoffensive way of explaining plagiarism. However, these two terms may deliver a connotation that plagiarism is not much of a serious offense. Whether the act of plagiarising is intentional or unintentional, it is considered as a fraud. In an academic setting plagiarism may even
Academic learning in today’s changing world brings demands to future professionals. Whether in a traditional classroom, or through distance learning, one thing is similar and which cannot bring forth a successful educational future. One thing that can damage anyone’s academic future is plagiarism. Whether being the future of a straight “A” student, or a student who is just getting by. The fact remains that anyone can fall victim to plagiarism. Plagiarism is the use of other writer’s words without acknowledging the source and taking those words and passing them off as one’s own ideas (Jones, 2001). Some people may think plagiarism is just copying someone else’s work but in reality plagiarism is much serious and hold very serious
Plagiarism is a breach of academic integrity and can be described as the unethical practice of copying a person’s ideas and passing them off as your own. It is crucial to avoid plagiarising an author’s work when conducting research and writing reports, both as a university student and an employee. Essentially, when using another author’s ideas, it should be summarised explaining the main points of the article by using one’s own words. However, when information is paraphrased or direct quotes from the original author are included, the author needs to be acknowledged using a referencing system. The referencing system that I currently use in my studies at UniSA to acknowledge another author’s work is the Harvard referencing system. This is an
I think it is important that a university expect students to do their own work. Because in my opinion it’s not fair for someone to put their time and effort into an assignment for someone to turn around and steal it and get credit for it. As stated in the Mid- America Christian University Policy and Procedure Information “The purpose of an academic assignment is for students to engage in the mental process of knowing, comprehending, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating academic content and presenting conclusions or results using standard grammar, mechanics, and content in a coherent and organized fashion.”(Mid-America Christian University
