Music should be kept in public schools
It is widely accepted that music helps with learning. If so, then why are music programs from public schools cut? While music can be extremely expensive and distracting from other subjects in school, students involved in a music program can benefit. They are able to remember better, learn and understand language easier, and stay in school longer. Before students graduate, however, they need to make sure they have a good memory.
Music helps with memory by being associated with positive memories. According to Does Music Help Memory? By William R. Klemm PhD, people without any musical training performed better when studying with music they preferred to listen to. When the music was played again during the test, the non-musicians performed better rather than neutral music. This is because the release of dopamine. The release of dopamine allowed the learning process to be mentally categorized as rewarding instead of a punishment, so it was memorized easier. With musicians they studied better with neutral, non-intrusive music. This was because with the music musicians found pleasurable, they used more cognitive power to analyze the structure of the music to recognize why it was pleasing. Neutral music on the other hand is much easier to ignore. this is important because any kind of distraction in a learning environment interferes with the creation of memories. When neutral music was played
Image result for listening to music active brain. Listening to music in the classroom helps students’ brains work better. The differentiation in beats between songs changes the way our brain is working causing constant motion and thinking processes. Music is really helpful in school. The University of Wales conducted a survey about listening to music while you study. The results showed the future scientists that listening to music while studying and doing homework is helpful. The music improves students’ attention, memory and mental abilities such as math (Abercrumbie 1). The music helps brains work harder and learn better giving learners better skills in the classroom such as math. The different types of music that we listen to fires up different parts of our brains. Listening to a wide variety of music while studying is very effective for students (Abercrumbie 1) "These transitions between musical movements offer
Music helps students stay on task and keeps them focused. “Melodious sounds help encourage the release of Dopamine, a “Feel Good” neurotransmitter in the reward area of the brain as would eating a delicacy.” Stated Dr. Amit Sood. Many studies have been concluded with results that when students listen to music they improve in their overall functions.
Another reason is music can be benefit for people’s brain development. Music uses both sides of the brain, thus resulting in the overall development of the brain. In fact, several researches proved that the all four of the cortex's lobes are activated when the brain is involved in musical activity. In fact, during these musical tasks, even the cerebellum of the brain is activated. A musician has to constantly make decisions about the elements of music, like form, timbre, melody, etc and also tempo, tone, rhythm etc. This helps in enhancing the ability of the brain to become very good at multitasking and organizational abilities. It improves abilities of expression and enhances intelligence of a person.
MUSIC AROUSAL ON RECALL 2Effects of Low and High Arousal Music on Recall Music is often used in modern day as an aid for recall and retention with homework, studying, and test-taking. Some professors and teachers utilize certain genres of music during tests to assist students in recall. It is common for individuals to listen to music during certain tasks in an attempt to boost either retention or recall. There are many studies that have found correlations between music and memory recall. Most studies conclude that low arousal music is beneficial for both recall and
Music is arguably one of the world’s most important universal languages. Documentation of music can be found as early as Biblical days and can be heard all around. Think about all the places one is exposed to music: radio, TV, elevator, stores, restaurants etc. Every culture and country has its own style of music and the importance of music is paramount to individuals in many ways. Music is so powerful it can create a visceral response by lowering the heart rate and decreasing stress levels (Wright, 2017). Evidence has also shown music to activate areas of the brain that are engaged during “Other euphoria inducing stimuli such as food, sex, and drugs of abuse” (Wright, 2017, p. 3). Music, sound perception – the most powerful sense, can impact the way one feels and behaves (Wright, 2017). With evidence proving to have an impact on the brain both physically and emotionally, supporting a 5% tax increase to fund both curricular and extracurricular programs will enhance student’s development and provide to them a well-rounded education.
With school budget cuts, and no music instruments, more and more people are beginning to realize the benefits of having music in education. Providing music as part of education helps develop intelligence that leads to greater success in school and in life. Everyone from VH1 Save The Music to The National Association For Music Education agree that, “Every student in the nation should have an education in the arts.” These two companies are doing everything they can to get out the information about music, and the importance of resorting music education as part of the core curriculum.
In today’s society, the value of music education is declining at an alarming speed. Many schools around the United States have been forced to cut spending on music in place of other classes that are viewed as being much more important. This is a travesty for our culture and for our future generations. Little does our society realize that there are many benefits that music education has to offer. The Government should make every kids take a music class of their choice at a young age.
Cesario et al. (2013) points out that, “music is one of the few activities that exercise both sides of the brain” (p.142). That statement shows that music integration in a school setting allows students to acquire skills that positively affects their memory, teamwork, and many qualities that benefit their academic performance. Students put in effort to perform well and improve within this class since they eventually perform during events, such as, the school’s Christmas concert. With that said, Cesario et al. (2013) states, “music performance experience also stimulates the area of the brain responsible for memory, enhancing the student’s ability to retain information in all academic settings” (p.142). Which are also beneficial towards a student's
Picture yourself walking through a hallway in a high school The same hallway that every Friday afternoon the band marches down playing music for the football game pep rally. Or, visualize walking by the auditorium and hearing the beautiful, distinct voices of each person in the choir. Now, picture that same school but with no music education, no band, and no glee clubs. Imagine that group of kids for whom music was a major part of their world. Where do you see these kids now? Lost? Hurting? Not able to cope or fit in to a group of people? Wondering where they belong? Music education is slowly getting eliminated in public schools. Without these ensembles, kids do not have a way to express their feelings and are not able to connect with other
It can be proven, through literary research and personal experiences, that music has a positive effect on learning and memory. It can be concluded that these positive effects have an impact on patients with Alzheimer’s, on the motor skills and auditory memory of mentally disabled children, on students attempting to remember subject manner that they are learning, and on the affectivity of advertisements. On a personal note, music has facilitated my ability to remember things, both positive and negative, a number of times. For example, in high school I memorized the days of the week in French by singing them along with a tune that was already familiar to me. I have also had multiple experiences in which I remember things that I do not want
Music can help enhance students performance in classes. People may say that music take the focus away from the core classes and this might hurt their ability to learn new skills. Music and other arts classes teach students basic personality traits that will help them focus in their classes and in life in general. When in a music program it teaches students discipline, dedication, and comprehension skills so that they can better master their music and help others to understand what the composer was trying to represent in there piece (Petress, Ken paragraph 5). These are all skills that a students must learn in order to accomplish much in life and is a wonderful tool that they will be able to use to benefit how they study and how they take tests.
Public school music programs are essential for every student. There are many benefits of a music program in public schools. One benefit of a music program in public school is that it helps students to build their memorization skills. This is true because ever since I was participating in a music program in my public school my memorization skills improved tremendously. Another reason public school music programs are essential to every student is that it can improve their hand-eye coordination, this is also true because ever since I was in band my soccer skills improved. Thus, there are many benefits of public school music
Music has been around in schools for a long time. Many students listen to music while studying as well as participating in music programs. Music has a positive effect on a students overall success because it reduces stress and helps students retain information.
There are many ways that music can influence the human brain. One of the many astonishing qualities that the human brain can accomplish is the ability to retain information for a long and short period of time. The part of the brain where retention of memory takes place is located in the hypothalamus, located in the temporal lobe. The parts that these parts of the brain are where memory is stored. The ability to remember many of the memories that human are able to retain come in different ways. Some com and stay in the human mind naturally. Another way that humans are able to retain information is through the use of music.
High schools across the country are working hard to defund their art programs, primarily because they believe that they are less important than the standard studies of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Not only should students take an arts program during their high school careers, but they should also take at least two semesters to be able to gain all that they can from one of the particular programs. It is now more important than ever to ensure an equally balanced education between the standard and art classes. Studies have shown that participation in arts such as music has had a significant impact on a student’s learning process in an extremely positive way (Judson). Teachers and principals are beginning to realize how important these programs really are because they can see the improvement in their student’s academic scores and involvement with the school.
