Mental Illness in Retrospect Mental illness is real, it is here, and it is not a joke. Well, if it is such a big deal, what exactly is it? According to the Mayo Clinic, the term “mental illness” refers to “a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior” ("Mental Illness", 2015). Back in the 1900’s when the words “mental illness” was said, society had a drastically different reaction to it than they would have today. Mental illness has a long and complex history with varied public reactions throughout time and a variety of dangerous treatments. Though the mistakes of the past have left their mark, we are surely more aware and more educated about the subject than we have ever been before. Less than 116 years ago, a woman would have been considered psychotic if diagnosed with anxiety. However, today anxiety is more publicly recognized and is easily treated. According to the ADDA, more than forty million adults are diagnosed with anxiety in the United States. People are afraid of the unknown, which was the case in the 1800s and earlier. At the time, it was fair to expose and ridicule these people as weird or dangerous, because society did not have the knowledge nor the technology that we have today. Segregating those who are in any way, shape, or form dfferent from us has always been a part of our nature. However, just because it is our nature, does not make this type of separation fair, appropriate or tolerable. When
