The Small Business Administration (SBA) and affiliated non-profit organizations that provide support to women entrepreneurs should set aside funding to promote more awareness of resources available to women who want to become business owners. The three resources I think the SBA needs to market better is their business training on-site and online, funding availability, and their mentorship programs. These services can easily be promoted by private lenders backed by the SBA, newspapers, radio, television, social media, postcards in the mail, or even pamphlets available in the public library. Many of these women are seeking knowledge to start a business and are facing major life changes carrying financial burdens. Helms describes these women …show more content…
The training will show a person if they should consider performing a service, or creating a product. Some skills that many women already have that can lead to lucrative businesses can include baking, cleaning, organizing, building websites, writing, creating personal care products, and much more. A person will also learn to how to price their products and services to see if their business idea will sustain itself over time. This is the fun part of starting a business that many already know. The other crucial part of turning a business into reality is creating the business plan and knowing the legalities of starting and managing a business. To start a business, there are guidelines and regulations by the government that need to be considered. A business needs to be properly registered before launching a business. A person needs to register their business as a sole-proprietorship, partner, limited liability company, or a corporation. This step should be not taken lightly, and guidance is needed to set up the business correctly. The business plan will help to give the business focus. The size and structure of the business will determine how in-depth a business plan needs to be. For most small business just starting out it will only need to be 5 to 10 pages. A business plan will include a mission statement, an overview of the business, products and services being offered, who will be involved with the business, a financial plan, and a projection of
Lesley Gillespie, the cofounder of Australia’s most successful bakery, Baker’s Delight, has shown many, if not all, of the traits required to be a successful entrepreneur, and is now on the BRW Rich Women 2015 list. In an equal partnership with husband Roger, her position as joint chief executive puts her on the list of a minority of business owned by women, especially in the 1980’s when Bakers Delight was opened. Though she has said that she has not faced many barriers to being a woman in business, apart from a few instances, a woman would likely not have made it to be so successful without focus, thinking of those around her, passion, self motivation and without being a hard worker, all of which are traits required to be an entrepreneur.

Women make up half of the United states population according to the US census bureau, however women have been historically underrepresented in the business environment (7. US census). If women could overcome the challenges that seem to affect them in business they could become an integral part of the future workforce as it grows in many women based industries. What challenges could be holding women back from their full potential in the business world? The first part of my research question to be addressed that would allow an adequate understanding of the subject would be to find the challenges that specifically women as a gender group may face in business, I believe this will help to understand what effects they have on the challenges that African American Women(AAW) face. Although women owned business have been steadily increasing rapidly in growth in the US economy there are certain challenges that specifically African American women have been found to have to face that may hinder them from reaching the same potential afforded their male counterparts. In a journal writing written by the international labor organization(ILO) they focused on these challenges that women business owners face and some of these specific questions were addressed. For a unique business concept to come to fruition it needs to start with a plan. The United States Small Business Administration, also known as SBA for short, can help prospective small business owners take their concepts and turn them into reality. “SBA was created in 1953 as an independent agency of the federal government … that helps Americans start, build and grow businesses (Mission Statement 2013).” To do this, the SBA has simplified a six section business plan that can be completed on their website and saved for future use. The six sections of the SBA business plan are: an executive summary, company overview, marketing research, product(s) and/or service(s), marking and sales, and, lastly, financial projections. Even though there are
