Law enforcement agencies in United States receiving military equipment from the federal government is a great idea and I’m hundred percent supportive of that. First and foremost, it’s saving the country capital from spending extra money to purchase new equipment to the standard of modern policing and secondly it’s equipping police agencies with better tactical equipment to solve complex situations for instance the North Hollywood shootout in 1997 is a typical example why law enforcement agencies should receive military gears; Heavily armed bank robbers slugged with the Los Angeles police department for several hours. This occurred because the robbers were armed with powerful assault rifle and wore military grade body armor. Another incident
I absolutely believe that it is appropriate and necessary for local and state law enforcement agencies to acquire equipment from the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO) better known as The 1033 Program. This program allows all agencies to sign for perfectly good excess military equipment without any cost to the agency. This really benefits the smaller agencies across the country because the majority of the agencies employ less than 200 personnel with over three quarters of the department’s budget solely going towards salary and benefits (Dudley, 2014). Being able to sign for excess military equipment without any charge allows that department to be better equipped and saves the taxpayers money.
I have been studying the effects of protective headgear and their ability to prevent head injuries. Attached is my report, “Effects of Protective Headgear on Subsequent Concussions.”
One stipulation of the 1033 program that grants most local agencies the military grade weapons is that the said local agencies must use the equipment within one year of receiving it. This odd rule may lead to weapons being used with no just cause only because they must be used within a designated time frame. In one instance a MRAP vehicle was given the Ohio University Police so that they could have a presence at football games (War, 24). It also doesnn’t seem difficult for these weapons to be requested. Under the 1033 program there are two criteria for approval. First, that the agency plans to use the equipment for law enforcement purpose (counter drug and counterterrorism efforts are emphasized by law), and second, the transfer will result
Alfred Hitchcock once said “There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.” This idea proves to be true in Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” as Rainsford is constantly in fear from the anticipation of being caught by Zaroff. At the beginning Rainsford shows that he is a great hunter and shows no fear. When he is forced to play his game he is fearful and is scared for his life. The setting relates to the story by building suspense.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee used Atticus to prove the theme that every individual is unique but, everybody is created as equals and are still huaman during his closing statement to the jury. Defending for Tom Robinson, Atticus starts by “unbuttoned his vest, unbuttoned his collar, loosened his tie, and [taking] off his coat”(1). He shows the jury and the spectators of Maycomb that he has nothing to hide and is willing to preach the truth. Then “he [began] talking to the jury as if they were folks on the post office corner”(2) and was acting as if they were having a friendly conversation. Atticus states that he is “confident that [the] gentlemen [in the jury] would go along with [prosecutor] on the assumption—the evil assumption—that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber”(5).
All together law enforcement has changed, but few see the drastic changes that have happened. Everyday, police and sheriffs are working to keep the people in their community safe. With improved technological advances and social changes, police and sheriffs are keeping a closer eye on things today. For example, improved weapons such as tasers have helped keep suspects safe, computers in police cruisers allow instant access of information of individuals. Other social changes, such as women allowed to join the police forces have helped law enforcement a lot with domestic violence cases because they are calmer then most men. No matter what happens police and the sheriffs will be there to protect and serve
In this paper I would be identifying, compare, and contrast the policing function at the local, state, and federal organizational levels. I would be Analyzing how the organizational, management, administration, and operational functions at these three organizational levels are similar or different and why. Also I would be identifying the leadership characteristics and responsibilities pertaining to each organizational level.
Why is it that America, a country of freedom and opportunity, is the country that is stripping its people of their freedom the most often? It is unfortunate that everyday, police officers break their vows to “remain composed and respectful” and avoid behaving in an “abusive, oppressive, harassing, bullying, victimising or offensive” way (Swinford). This nation that boasts to the world about its benevolent treatment to its citizens has a sinister way of treating people differently depending on their various traits. It becomes more and more obvious with each succeeding case that America’s law enforcement teams are not as colorblind as they should be and claim to be; people, especially those of color, are being incarcerated at an alarming rate. The United State’s incarcerated population increased by over 500% over the last 40 years, rising to about 2.3 million people (SentencingProject). While it is not practical to expect our police officers to be able to apprehend every single criminal, it should not be too much to ask that they do it in a fair and unbiased manner. Protests such as Black Lives Matter still happen today because there is still inequality happening on a large scale everyday, especially in our law enforcement system. Minorities are the primary victims of the whole issue. It is ironic that America, a nation built on freedom, has a critical problem of mass incarceration. Although the United States pledges to be a nation of equality and opportunity, the surplus
Policing is the duty of the police force to keep law and order in check in an certain area. Though sometimes this very definition is violated in America, and rarely any action is taken against it. That will change as we come to examine how criminals are turned into victims.
Policing in America underwent a major paradigm shift in the way that law enforcement was carried out – this shift was known as a shift from the Political Era to the Professional (Reform) Era (Roberg, Novak, Cordner, & Smith, 2015). This switch in eras happened in the United States during a period branded as the Progressive Era, when many “types of problems … began to be addressed not only in the public sector but also in private enterprise” (Roberg et al., 2015, p. 41). This movement affected the United States and the American life since it functioned on the ideas that there should be “(1) honest and efficiency in government, (2) more authority for public officials (and less for politicians), and (3) the use of experts to respond to specific
There are many factors that contribute to today’s American policing. Once such factor that contribute tremendously to today’s policing came in 1829 when Sir Robert Peel’s concept of policing came into effect. This would change the way policing would be performed in not only England, but the United States (U.S) and around the world. Another huge factor that impacts policing is the relationship the U.S. Government has with policing. These factors affect every policing organization in the U.S.
If you currently are or will be considering becoming a law enforcement officer you will hopefully find the following information useful. I will be conveying to you not only the importance of professional appearance and means you can use to be more efficient at presenting such an appearance. While representing a state, city or county a less than professional image as an officer is not acceptable. As a public servant an officer’s appearance is the public’s first impression of who you are and what you represent or stand for. Not caring about your own appearance as a professional may lead some to assume you do not care about your job. We will discuss the reasons an officer should take extra pride in their appearance as well as steps to take that will assist in achieving a more professional appearance. Hopefully you will consider the advice given to you and make yourself a more professional looking officer or officer to be.
1. Identify and discuss the eight (8) recurring reasons that change occurs in law enforcement agencies.
Small town Holdrege, Nebraska is where I decided to look a little further into law enforcement on the State level. There are quite a few State Troopers in this area, or it seems to be that way anyways. I contacted Sargent John Wagner for an interview. I have to say these men/women in uniform are slightly intimidating. I’m not sure if it is the uniform, or the fact I grew up thinking these officers of the law are just that scary. I guess we shall see once we begin the interview.
In today’s society it seems as if all the violence that is occurring is revolved around race. Negative law enforcement involvement has been one of the major controversial topics that our generation has been faced with. Race, violence and authority is a very well-known racial disparity that will take some time to be seen otherwise. After the incidents occur, what really shakes the nation is that there is no real accountability. No one wants to admit that an injustice occurred and a small altercation lead to a casualty. Leadership within the justice system often gets challenged with such scenario. Does one discipline and makes an example out of his law enforcement officer (LEO), or does one address the public so that there is no uproar on such final decision.
