Why “Junk Food” should stay in school It’s been said in multiple states across America that the junk food sold in schools is causing many problems. Problems such as unhealthy habits, affecting the brain, and childhood obesity. The government and many school districts have done multiple things to reduce/stop the problem. They have done research dealing with the junk food and tried banning junk food, which many school districts did not continue with. Junk food should not be banned in schools because the root of childhood obesity is not the snacks sold in schools, school loses money if they do not sell snacks, and the government should not dictate what children eat. The school is losing money because of this. Other school districts have done research on how much money they are losing. In the article “School board may ease ban on junk food” it says, “In 2001, before the junk-food ban was passed, high-school associated student body (ASB) governments across the city made $214,00 in profits from vending machines, according to district data. This year (2011), they’ve made $17,000.” These schools have lost around 13% of their profits, $197,000. Schools are losing money. What gives the government the right to dictate what children eat. Children and or their parents should be able to make the decision of what they eat or do not eat. In an article it says, “Can one learn to make healthy choices if there are no choices, no alternatives?” Meaning how are children supposed to learn to make healthier decisions as to what they eat if they never get the chance to. Also government regulations are not doing anything with students obesity and overweight in other areas. It has been said that, “ obesity rates have doubled.” So the government regulations not only did not achieve the goal of reducing obesity but made it worse. Banning junk food from school is not the right thing to do. Children should be able to make their own decisions about what they eat. School districts should be able to provide different choices of food that the students will like and
