Moving from Jordan to the United States was challenging for my family. I was the only child at the time and my parents primarily spoke Arabic in the house. The elementary teachers I had described me as a timid student, because I could barely speak English. I had difficulty with simple reading and writing, while other students went through class with ease. Needing extra tutoring classes and years of being in ESL was exhausting. However, learning how to read, write, and speak English fluently was only the beginning of my journey.

Immigration plays a pivotal role in the development of the country through assimilation of those immigrants into society providing diverse skillsets needed in the job market. Many economist claim that a benefit to allowing more legal immigration would allow for more economic growth which would help tremendously chop off some of the $16 trillion dollar debt the nation is currently in (Furchtgott-Roth, 2015). No one enjoys leaving their home, but when calamities occur there is sometimes no choice. Due to political and natural disasters, such as the earthquake in 2010, the number of Haitian immigrants in the United States has increased to 700,000 in the last 30 years. Many of these immigrants were encouraged to come to America for safe keeping until the year of 2018. Most of these Haitians have plans to stay in the country illegally. Very few of these immigrants have understanding towards the American life. To help them become legal, the United States can create an adaption program to aid immigrants in acquiring abilities to speak English, maintain economic stability, and provide workers for the United States.

Coming from a new country I had to face many challenges. All these challenges made who I am today. When I came to the United States in 7th grade, I barely knew how to speak English. The language barrier posed a serious problem for me. I found it difficult to interact with people. Adjusting to a new country was no easy task. Day in and day out, immigrants work hard to achieve permanent residency or citizenship in the U.S. and live in constant fear. While some Americans understand the importance of immigration and believe immigration strengthens the American society, others are taking it to social media to express their humor or anti-immigration feelings. A few are even going to the extent of approaching certain people of immigrant groups and attacking immigrant groups with foul language and violence. One such incident occurred just a few months ago in February. Adam W. Purinton, a white Kansas resident, was kicked out of a bar because he was questioning two Indian bar patrons’ immigration status and throwing racial slurs at them. Angry Purinton went back to the bar with a handgun that same night and shot the two Indians killing one and wounding the other. Later in court, it was said that Purinton shot them “because of their actual and perceived race, color, religion and national origin.” Not even two weeks later, an Indian-born man was outside his house in Seattle when an attacker shouted “Go back to your own country” before shooting him in the arm. Incidents like these are leaving many Indian immigrants worried for themselves and their families. As an Indian-born immigrant myself, I feel the need to address the importance of Indian immigration, the basic immigration process, and some underlying struggles the immigrants face.
