What if there was free healthcare, preventive medicine, and a minimally ill population in the United States? Healthcare is inaccessible to too many of our neighbors, and the consequences of this are as devastating as they are unnecessary. On October 12th, 1993 my family experienced this directly when my brother passed away at the age of five. Coming from a poor family in the South Bronx, we did not have access to the preventative care that could have saved my brother’s life. Growing up without ever knowing Michael left a void in my family, and although we are functioning the damage still lingers. We continue to question what could have gone differently, and we sometimes talk about how present someone can be even in their absence. My desire …show more content…
In order for me to have a meaningful impact, I will need to be equipped with the vast knowledge that a course of graduate study in public health will provide. Studying health policy and management will especially be beneficial in furthering my understanding on how to handle administrative roles not only assisting people that are currently ill, but also preempting illness in communities that are the least equipped to handle it. To affect positive change on a large scale, my goal is to become a Legislative Policy Advisor, and to use my expertise to advocate for policy that increases access to healthcare, and more specifically to preventative care to those who need it most. The Affordable Care Act has expanded access to healthcare in ways many longtime advocates never thought possible. However, I believe there is so much more that can be done to help, like facilitating ways that allow people to circumvent existing laws that restrict treatment, and addressing the health crises faced by both our poor urban and rural communities. I should be accepted into ______ at ______ because I bring a unique perspective, being one of only a handful of biology and political science double majors, along with my intrinsic motivation to accomplish my goals using a breadth of experience in two widely disparate …show more content…
I’ve been a member of the University at Albany College Democrats since my freshman year, and have served as President since 2014. During my presidency I have doubled active membership, and have been lead our chapter to national recognition, being named 2015 national chapter of the year by the student branch of the DNC. Along with my involvement locally, I also been an advocate both on the state and national level, serving in 2014-2015 as co-chair of the College Democrats Hispanic Caucus. Another leadership position I have held was as the Senator for the Applied and Natural Science Division in the University at Albany Student Association Senate. During my time as a Senator, I have created and scrutinized university policy as my roles as Chairman of the appropriations committee and a member of the board of finance. My professional experience works concurrently with my personal experiences to help further my career. Coming from a Bangladeshi and Puerto Rican heritage in a lower income area I appreciate the diverse needs of people, and I am comfortable working across the cultural spectrum. The most important lessons that I learned during my duration in college involves planning. Unfortunately, I learned this lesson after allowing it to negatively affect my grades. Over the past few semesters I have learned
The objective of the Winston Health Policy Fellowship is to provide a unique opportunity to learn about the political system through direct exposure to public and private sector roles in health policy development. The program supports fellows in Washington, DC for a year-long experience learning about, and participating in, the health policy-making process and also provides scholarships for master’s
While interacting with current medical students pursuing the MD/MPH dual degree at a UTHSCSA student panel, I realized that obtaining an MPH would align greatly with my interests and career goals, allowing me to expand the scope of my medical education and enhance my critical thinking skills. I enjoy how public health combines various aspects needed to treat disease and improve health outcomes, and I know that integrating the MPH core concepts with my medical degree, will help me to become a well-rounded and better physician who approaches healthcare through both an individual and population-based perspective. An education in public health will provide me with various opportunities ranging from the creation and development of community health projects, to contributing to the modification of current health policies. I will seize the opportunity to work with professionals from all occupations including educators, clinicians, executives, and I will become an advocate and a credible voice for positive change through a better understanding of the healthcare system that is in place
In five years I hope to be graduating college and transitioning straight into the workforce. Growing up in a family company allowed me to learn about how the business operates at an early age. Due to this fact I would like to major in business management and finance. Being raised in a small town can have its benefits but it can also have its restrictions. There isn’t much room to experience new adventures, but it is a place that you can always come back to. My week long experience at Hoosier Girls State 2016 left me to ponder the major, applied politics. The time spent there had my mind reeling on all the ways I could make a difference in our area through a political standpoint.
I chose the article “What factors Hinder Women of Color from Obtaining Preventive Health Care” to review because I found it interesting and full of truths. With that being said, I feel there are so many variable when it comes to woman and healthcare. This article is about a specific report done and all the research that backs up that report. The article explains how the research has regularly provided facts that health care inequalities exist between white and minority woman but more specifically minority women with lower income therefore a lack to access of health care, health care providers, and prevented care. It was in the 1985 Report of the “Secretary’s Task Force on Black and Minority Health” that listed the factors that cause these inequalities in health care among people of color which resulted from a lack of access to health care providers, differences in healthy behaviors, and environmental factors. The 1985 study found that regardless of race, woman of color who had a regular doctor were as likely to receive preventive health care which of course leads to healthier woman.
Since coming to college, I have grown a desire to help create policies and programs to alleviate the disparities that exist in the US and globally. The understanding I have gained from sociology and ethics classes I have taken at UT has broadened my interest in health care and my volunteer experiences have solidified this classroom knowledge. As a student in the Health Science Scholars Honors Program, I have the opportunity to complete a senior capstone thesis project. This interest has had a major role in directing my research and I believe will effect the direction that I take in my career.
Handwashing – It is important to wash your hands as a lot of the germs and bacteria you face in your work role will be passed on by hands. Hands should be washed after sneezing or coughing, toileting, eating (Before and after), Handling food (Before and after to avoid cross contamination) and also when you come into contact with a child/object that may be at risking of passing on infections or illnesses.
Data reveals that "the U.S. spends far more than all other countries on health care, but yet has the worst health outcome than any other countries, like France or Germany, that spend considerably less" (OCED, 2014). The actual reality of the quality of health care in the United States is really in bad shape. Of the 34 countries rated by the OECD study, the United States ranks #1 in health care spending per capita and # 1 in percentage of GDP spent on health care. The United States ranks #27 in overall life expectancy, behind such countries as Chile, Portugal and Slovenia. When it comes to infant mortality, the United States ranks #30, behind such countries as the Czech Republic, Estonia and Greece (OECD, 2014).
I covered the same blog topic, and while I was reading through the health coverage options I became reassured in knowing how I plan on receiving healthcare coverage in the future. Like yourself, I am currently covered under my parent’s health insurance plan but this will not always be the case. Hopefully my future job provides health insurance but if not I have several other options to stay covered. Thankfully government websites like healthcare.gov are available to effectively inform the public on the many routes one can take. Furthermore, proper healthcare is not just maintaining one’s body it is also being informed on how the healthcare system functions to make sure one is receiving all the available healthcare checkups.
The fast-changing economic landscape in the United States along with gridlock stalemate among congress members making it difficult to collaborate on a constructive solution to reduce health care expenses in the country have revealed an unresolved question. Is health care a right or a privilege? The country has guaranteed all its citizens free access to education, police, postal, military, park system and other government related services; however, has never committed to providing them with health care coverage (Bauchner, 2017). This is an important question to resolve because the realized answer will be the ultimate driver of all derived public health policy. Ensuring quality health care to all citizens can be very costly and there needs to
I personally believe that healthcare should be considered a right for everyone in USA. It is a very basic need that we can’t just ignore and disregard while treating it as a luxury like having insurance for your $100,000 yacht because healthcare is not a luxury. Unfortunately, that’s how the Congress (not all the congressmen) is treating it as such, more importantly to find more ways to profit from healthcare. I do understand that the system may simply not be able to afford the best care that they can provide to the people. People who have come down with any kind of sickness should have the right to receive the medical care as it is their right to do so regardless of what kind of infliction they have. People who want cosmetic surgeries (facelift
Many believe there is a solution to help lower the rates of chronic illnesses and the solution involves the need for preventative care. How can the government point the fault at the people for not taking the measures if there is no way they can budget it in? Choosing between their lives and putting basic needs in the house, puts a drastic toll on the people’s overall health. There have been several debates whether the social class biases in diet qualities and dietary health and how it prohibits Americans from healthy eating. Because of how food cost is measured. Most of the nation can’t even afford simple blood work that could potentially save their life in the future. It is estimated that there are between 20,000 and 45,000 deaths a year due to lack of health insurance. More than 130,000 Americans died between 2005-2010 because they went without screen and preventative care (Obamacare Facts). People that do not have insurance are more likely to delay or even go without medical care. So something so simple as my fathers blood work that changed his diet and his basic lifestyle prevented him from potentially having a stroke and could have killed him. So few Americans like my mother, are fortunate to receive health benefits from a companies, like Frito Lay, and could afford the deductible and receive the care they need. Over 31 million Americans are not so fortunate; 40 million Americans are expected to go uninsured by 2025 (Obamacare Facts). If our nation is struggling to
There are many different issues concerning health care in America which should be addressed as this is currently a topic that has support on both sides of the political spectrum and affects many people. While it is argued and believed that a national health care system is a form of socialism, should be an individual’s responsibility not the government’s to provide health insurance, the government providing health insurance would decrease the quality and availability of health care, and would lead to a larger government debt. As there may be some truth to this, it should not prohibit the access for all people to have health insurance in America which would improve public health, reduce overall health care spending, help small businesses,
“You may not appreciate the presence of good health, but you will definitely regret the absence of good health, because health is happiness.” These words, said by author Amit Kalantri are words recognizing the need for acknowledgment when it comes to the health of everyone. There are a majority of people in the United States who cannot afford healthcare because of its Out-of-Pocket system. Healthcare is the maintenance and improvement of physical and mental health. It is needed by everyone, whether they are ill or not. Many of those people who can afford it are stuck in their own little worlds and do not bother stopping to “smell the roses” so to speak. They have everything they could possibly want and feel that they are inconveniencing themselves by stopping for a mere second to appreciate the blessing bestowed upon them.
Nurses have always cared about people, families and communities in their practice. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of nurses working outside the hospital, mainly in community settings that focus on individuals and families. There is also a growing emphasis on community-centered nursing care with the community as a client. The growth of a healthy community is a lifelong process, which requires constant nutrition and persistence. (Plianbangchang, 2014).Everyone has a role to play in building a healthier and more vibrant community. The choices we make at home, work, school, play and worship determine most of what creates the personal health and vitality of the community. To a large extent it is about how we spend our time, dollars and talents. But it is also about how we create the configurations in our communities that help generate positive change. Healthy communities require inspired leadership and action from every corner of our communities.
The US constitution doesn 't guarantee healthcare of its citizens nonetheless, most of its dictates implies brotherhood, love and equity. The free market economy that the health care in the United State is provided is a major challenge, mostly because people instinctively think healthcare is an essential service and would be guaranteed in a rich and developed country like the US. However, Health care is a commodity in the US which means it will be affected by forces of the market just like automotive industries for example. So each provider in the industry has to figure out a way to balance demand and supply, pay employees, fight competition, market their products and services appropriately, merge and acquire possible facilities with the aim of making profit amongst other things. Likewise, the buyer has to search for healthcare package that best fits his needs. The apparent advantage of having options has been lost in the fragmented, multi-layered and often confusing nature of the health system.
