Every time you walk into school, or many other buildings, you are asked to take your hat off without question. This has become so normal, that no one ever questions it. But really, what is the point of taking your hat off in the building? This rule is utterly useless and unfair and should be abolished in all schools.
This "no hats rule" is totally unfair. Students should have the right to wear hats! First and foremost, hats keep people warm. If a student is cold in class, they should be able to wear a hat or other headwear. It seems like such a simple solution, but yet, this rule prevents it. Erica Russaw from Auburn Riverside High School (InFlight) says, "Wearing a hat doesn't harm a single person!" So why is this rule still in place? They say that kids who disobey the rule

Hats could be a distraction, if they get in the way or if students play with them. But if the hats stay on their heads, they don't do anything at all. People say that dress codes like these show "unity in spirit." They also say this rule helps identify trespassers (Does a). This doesn't really make sense to me, because how is a single hat going to help identify someone that does not belong in the school? According to many school handbooks, this no hat rule prevents gang related violence. Wait, what? I understand that gangs might wear hats, but how does removing them in school prevent them from being violent? But when you look at it from another perspective, this rule is still somewhat important.
So what exactly is the point of the no hat rule? If there really isn't a clear one, then why is this rule in place in most schools? I believe that someone needs to stand up for their beliefs and abolish this rule. Hats do nothing to harm anyone and are simply another piece of clothing. Some people, like me, wear hats all the time, and schools are taking away this basic right. If you look at this issue from my perspective, this rule needs to
“...the state, in the form of the public school system, cannot legally tell students what to wear..” (Source 1). When the district school board is determining what students can and cannot wear it violates the First Amendment. Taking away a person’s right is not only is illegal but wrong. Students maintain a certain amount constitutional rights when they are in school, their decision about what they wear is protected as well.
How many times have you ever wanted to just throw a hat on top of your hair because you woke up late and did not want to deal with it? How often do you see an amazing piece of headgear and you thought wow I would so wear that but I can't wear it at school? How often do you think if i'm at school all day everyday doing all this work why can't you just wear what you want so you can put the final touch on this look. Well I think students should be able to wear a hat ,because they do all this work or if they have something embarrassing like hair or whatnot and even could improve self esteem and relations with others.
So all around schools you hear “take your hat off” or “take your hood off” some people dislike hearing this because it is a way for people to express their inner feelings. Teachers at school say that hats and hoodies are disrespectful. A question I have is. Why? The only part of the day where it may show a bit of disrespect is when students are doing the pledge of allegiance. Students should be able to wear hats if they want too. Plus it’s a free country. Free country means “ a country where the government does not control what people say or do for political reasons and can Express their opinions without punishment.” What this paragraph is trying to say is that you should be able to wear hats in school.
Many people where there hats in school and teachers are constly telling students to take it off. If they just changed the rule they wouldnt have to tell kids and waste there time to stop and tell the students to take off there hats. Many students dont to the aps and teachers they just do what they want and dont care about what they have to say.
People all around the world wear hats they are very popular. Hats are not just for keeping sun out of your eyes. There also a very stylish trend at the moment. Several years ago hats were allowed in schools but to this day many schools do not allow them. Students should be able to wear hats in school because they don't harm anyone, several people enjoy wearing them, and there is no real reason why we can't wear hats in school.
Students struggle throughout high school and go through a great deal of stress. Whether it be making friends, or working hard to pass a difficult class. To make things more pressuring, they are not allowed to wear what they want. The administration made the decision that it is best to suspend a student for their choice in clothing. If they go against the rule of dress code, there will be serious consequences. What students wear should not affect their class work. If a student gets sent home for their outfit, it is affecting their grades and attendance. Punishment disrupts the students education more than what they are wearing. High school students should feel free to embrace their individuality without being pressured by dress codes; therefore, it should be eliminated from all schools indefinitely.
For example, Venessa, a teacher for the 5th grade in NC, said "The glare from the fluorescent lights gives some people headaches and hurts their eyes. Wearing a ball cap cuts down on the glare on the paper from the lights. It is against our school policy for children to wear ball caps or hats of any kind in the building so we wear the caps only in my classroom. They must remove them before leaving my room and cannot wear them until they get inside.”. That means hats could protect your eyes from glare and it can also help your eyes all around the school.
Yet, in 1999, when Serrano High School first banned the wearing of clothes with certain colors because they were feared to be "gang-related", the students had no choice but to comply. While the School Board does retain the right to censor some forms of expression because they are inappropriate in language or may cause a disruption to the learning process, the idea that students are not allowed to wear clothes because of their color begins to push the envelope. In 2003 the school board took this a step further and banned any hat with a logo other than the schools logo on it because of the prevalence of hats with inappropriate logos on them that might be gang-related or have a double-meaning. However, this reasoning was never justified with any event or occurrence that would prove these hats were becoming an issue of security for the students. Often times, the only form of expression a High School age student has is the clothing they wear, and the banning of their selection of clothing without giving justification is equivalent to restricting any other form of free speech without justification. The fact that school boards only vaguely justify their reasons for certain dress code restrictions is enough to warrant a reasoned inquiry by the students into why their speech is being suppressed.

Imagine picking up your child from school to find her in tears. Through her sobs she tells you that her day was spent in In-School-Suspension (ISS) for refusing to remove her head scarf, part of your family’s religious attire; I’m sure that you would be outraged. Your child’s uniform policy does not allow for any type of head gear to be worn, which left her stuck outside of the classroom and in ISS. In the words of the United States Department of Education, “A school uniform policy must accommodate students whose religious beliefs are substantially burdened by a uniform requirement (“Manual on School Uniforms”), this mandate is distributed to all public schools that want to implement or are currently utilizing a uniform policy. What the school did to your child is considered a violation of her religious rights under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. A school district in North Carolina came to an out-of-court settlement after being slapped with a lawsuit due to the fact that they denied any exemptions from the uniform policy based on religion. Our great country was founded on the basis of Freedom of Religion, so why should we allow for it to be taken away because of a school board’s decision to adopt a uniform policy that does
Why is it disrespectful to wear hats in home Those are words many students have heard when they wear hats to school. We only follow this rule because it is tradition and what we have always done Some schools and our elders say it is disrespectful because soldiers do not wear hats Soldiers do not wear hats because they are not necessary
The reason is that the First Amendment’s Free Speech Clause requires courts and school districts to weigh and balance two forceful ideas that occasionally clash: The need for a safe, orderly school environment conducive to learning. The guaranteed American entitlement to speak or engage in expressive activity. Some states have passed laws empowering school boards to regulate student dress. For instance, Tennessee has a law allowing school boards to pass
Have you ever been excluded from learning because of what you wore to school? In most schools, dress codes are set in place to provide a better learning space for all students. Having a dress code can oppress students because students are given the impression that they should not express themselves. Not all families can afford the clothes that abide by the rules. For example, some students don 't have the means to pay for new clothes, so they have to use hand-me-down clothing. Enforcing a dress code can lead to more problems in the long run because of the exceptions made for students who are athletes and cheerleaders. Many school faculty members including teachers and administrators think that keeping a dress code will keep students looking appropriate while learning, but this idea is wrong because it keeps students from expressing themselves and, the dress code singles out women.
School uniforms also serve little to no purpose in benefiting the education of children around America. A uniform does not help a student learn things that they need to know. A uniform does not help a student study, take notes, or make flash cards. They bring no educational value to the table of learning. According to many educators and experts, “Uniforms do not improve academics, behavioral and social outcomes, or reduce discrimination or crime” (Farrell). So if a uniform cannot help a student increase their knowledge or grow as a person, why make students wear them?
Have you ever had to wear a school uniform? Did you you love it, or hate it? I’m here today to explain my stance on school uniforms. I believe that having a school uniform would be a good thing for multiple reasons. The first being how it would completely and utterly eradicate the issue of dress code. The next reason is how it would be able to create a more focused learning environment by eliminating clothing distractions. The most important reason in my mind however, is how it could drastically increase student safety at school. Now I will go a bit more in depth as I explain these reasons…
