Family plays a crucial role in an individual's life. They affect your decisions and the way you live. Your family can either bring you down or lift you up and push you to do your hardest.
Although your family is supposed to know you best & help you, they can sometimes do the opposite. In the book The Scarlet Ibis doodle’s brother did not respect doodle with his disability, because back then disabled people were seen as useless. Whenever brother had to go somewhere he had to take doole with him and he made him feel bad for it. This excerpt is an excerpt from the book, “to discourage his coming with me, I’d run with him across the ends of cotton rows and careem him around corners on two wheels. Sometimes I accidentally turned him over, but never told mama.” this excerpt proved that he did not care for doodle and he just treated him like another one of his play toys. “ one day I took doodle up to the barn loft and showed him his casket, telling him we all had believed he would die… doodle studied the mahogany box for a long time then said ‘it's not mine’, ‘it is’ I said ‘ and before i’ll help you down from the loft, you are going to have to touch it’. ‘I won’t touch it he said sullenly. ‘ then i will leave you buy yourself’ I threatened, and made it as if I were going down.” This excerpt show how mean brother was to doodle and how much he brought him down and made him feel less than he really was. Family can also push you to hard, leading to sometimes deadly outcomes like
When some people are born they have disabilities like being weak or missing a limb. The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst is about a young boy named Doodle who has a weak heart and body and has a small chance of living. In the story Doodle displayed strength and perseverance
In the Scarlet Ibis, Hurst uses the theme of peer pressure to argue that striving for social expectations in school lead to death. In the scene when the narrator tries to make doodle walk, the narrator exclaims, ““Oh, you can walk,” I said, and took him by the arms and stood him up. He collapsed onto the grass like a half-empty flour sack” (Hurst 179). The narrator illustrates that Doodle “can walk” even though all the doctors said he can not. So in response, he “stood” doodle up to show that he can walk.
Kindness is the source of goodness that leads people to true happiness. We help others hoping that it changes their life for the better.
The short story “The Scarlet Ibis”,by James Hurt is about two brothers, the older one being the narrator and the younger one named Doodle, which is physically disabled. The older brother was thirteen when Doodle was five. Thus, the older brother wasn’t actually old enought to take good care of him yet. Doodle’s older brother took care of him more than his parents did. The film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, by Peter Hedges is also about two brothers, the oldest being Gilbert and the youngest being Arnie, which is mentally disabled. Gilbert took full responsability for Arnie even when he got in trouble. This is because his mother is obese, she is unable to be a mother to Arnie, she can barely walk, and can’t go up the stairs to her room. The older brothers tell their story. They mostly talk about the relationship with their younger brothers, which involved kindness and cruelty. Siblings tend to be harsh and amiable at the same time, in the following paragraphs the kinship among the two brothers in each story will vary.
Even when life throws you a curveball, you should always cherish what you have. “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst is a story about being grateful for all things in life, even if things are not going the way that was planned. The narrator in “The Scarlet Ibis” displayed selfishness and cruelty to his brother, Doodle.
The sense of solitude from a tragedy is overwhelming. The empty void of people who once have been there that accompanies someone. INTRIGUINGIt's a sorrowful experience for someone riddled with death in the family, but one can go through it with company. “Zelda, I found your Link” The short story "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurt continuously implies that companionship should be valued by and with others, like family members, especially when differences set others apart. THESIS
(HOOK) How can such a substantial relationship between a character and a reader fully conjure an affinity? (CI) Throughout the course of short stories I read, there were multiple essential characters who I relate to in my everyday life. (GS1) I ultimately relate to a protagonist, who shares the valuable trait, commitment. (GS2) Meanwhile, there is another character who I passionately feel connected to based on the outstanding quality, persistence, which shows true strength within oneself. (GS3) There is also another character who impersonates me best in a unique way because we both share the features of kindness, which is a weapon to win the hearts of many, especially the antagonists. (THESIS STATEMENT) I can best relate to the short story
There are many aspects that contribute to the idea of family. Family by definition, is a group of people related by blood (e.g. parents, siblings, cousins, etc). In class we have read and discussed many pieces of work that depict the influences of family and/or home on the individual. One of the two I will discuss is “Charlotte Temple” by Susanna Rowson, as well as “A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson” by Mary Rowlandson, both of which demonstrate the power of familial bonds and its effect over the course of your life. The impact of family, whether it is weak or strong, will define who you are as a person.
In the book, “The Scarlet Ibis” we are being told a side of the story that makes Doodle
My family are like branches on a tree, we all grow in different directions, at different paces but our roots will always run deep. Family will always come first to me, above all else; coming from a home with no father, the only father figure i had was my grandfather, to me family is so important because it is who we come from. Family
Family plays a major role in the way people behave in society. It also shapes and influences the individuals to choose their future occupations. Almost everything that we learn and believe as a child comes from the interaction within the family. Our parents went through the concepts of life, and they were exposed to society as a kid and an adult, which we learn as we get older as well. My grandfather’s military service story has a huge impact on my future career plan. He was an Army Physician in Taiwanese Army. He devoted his career and half of his life to the military during WWII
The symbol I chose as the focal point on my poster was the Scarlet Ibis (the bird). I chose this because this was not only the title of the original story, but it was one of the main ideas in the story. When Doodle found the bird outside, all he wanted to do was bury it when it died, and I think that was a really special part of the story. I think this really shows who Doodle is, and how his family reacts to it shows that they know he’s sensitive so they treat him with kindness. The theme of the narrative is perseverance because at first, the brother and his parents need to persevere through having this “disappointment” of a child/brother. The brother perseveres through having a not-so brother and possibly not ever being able to have someone to do stuff with. Doodle
A family can be defined as a person or people who make an effort to make sure that you are doing okay. They prove to you that they will always be an important part of your life, and that you will never be alone when you need someone the most. Family is an important factor in life, these people can help determine what type of person you will be. They help shape you into becoming an amazing person. They do not necessarily have to be blood to be a part of your family. They could just be a major aspect of your life. These people could be complete and total strangers to you at first, but if they demonstrate that they will help improve you life, they should be considered family. These people display many characteristics that will help benefit you in many ways.
Family means more than just blood related relatives or cousins around the neighborhood. There is a greater meaning behind the word. Society has been relatively wrong these past generations. So what happens when you have no “family”? don't have to worry about this issue, because family are also friends who will always care for you and will always be by your side through hell and back. Family will come out of
My family is the biggest social and cultural group I am a part of. I am able to draw inspiration and learn from every one of my family members. In our family environment, I am a sister and a daughter, as well as, a mentor and a role model. This is due to the fact that I am the second oldest sibling in our household. When it comes to short-term influences, my family impacts on a day to day basis. I learn to adapt to changing behaviors from my siblings, and that benefits me in the real world as well. As a result of learning to adapt, I can change my ways of thinking on a day to day basis.
