Here comes the number one question for everyone. How ready are you ready? Know your disaster seasons! Anywhere you live in the world there is some form of disaster. It might not affect you or your family, but there are lives that had been lost because people do not follow the proper steps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). To tell you the truth, I am one of them. Ever since I moved from New York to reside in Florida, I was told that my area is a no flood zone. Florida landscape is almost as flat as a pancake and is below sea level. As I scroll through the list of things that I needed in case there is a natural disaster, to tell you the truth I am not even close. So, far my area had not been touched since I moved from New York to Florida 10 years ago. However, hurricanes and storms are not new to me. …show more content…
Nurses’ delicate role is to plan for work, home, and the family Nies & McEwen, 2015, p. 559). For instance, if you have family and pets you should have a location where to meet and which facility will be used. Here are a few things that every Floridians should have on the go. A bag packed with nonperishable items, water, lanterns, batteries, disposable plastic garbage bags with draw strings, wet-wipes for hygiene purposes, can opener, medications, animals, secure pertinent documents, cash, family contact phone numbers, etcetera (FEMA, 2015). You will need at least 3 days supplies. The easiest way to achieve this is to make a check list or print off one from the FEMA website. The health of a community can significantly be impacted by disasters (Nies & McEwin (2015, p. 558), which can also terminate lives and cause
Should the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) move out from under the DHS umbrella to become a stand alone agency? Yes. We will discuss two glaring reasons that this should take place, budget & mission statement. Will it be an easy move? No, but after working out the administrative kinks, the FEMA would operate much smoother as it's own organization.
The study that has been done is on Hurricane Katrina Where a previous drill was done during Hurricane Pam to prepare for a hurricane of the intensity of Hurricane Katrina.
time of crisis by R. David Paulison, who unlike Brown, has had a career focused on disaster
Many people acted gallantly after Hurricane Katrina. The Coast Guard, rescued nearly 34,000 people in New Orleans alone, and everyday citizens commanded boats, offered needed supplies including food, and did whatever else they could do to help the ones in need. But, the government seemed to be caught off guard from this disaster. The FEMA took days to authorize operations in New Orleans, and even then did not seem to have a guaranteed plan. Officials, along with President George W. Bush, seemed oblivious to the extravagance of problems and suffering New Orleans and elsewhere.
The “No Child Left Behind Act” set unrealistic expectations and gave schools incentives to lie and cheat. The “PATRIOT Act” was an infringement upon individuals’ rights to privacy. And lastly, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were based on shortsightedness and false intelligence, and will leave a poor lasting impact in the years to come.
FEMA faces many obstacles when it comes to responding to or recovering from an emergency incident, but the mean issue they face is ensuring that each individuals civil rights are always maintained throughout their experience with the agency. The civil right act of 1964 offered a few protections to individuals with disabilities and fair housing rights to all no matter their race, religion, national origin or sex. With the implication of these laws it laid the groundwork for how FEMA provided service to the people in need, especially when responding to an emergency, it established the guideline on how to deal with people with a disability. FEMA stands behind the rights of all, but when it comes to ensuring PWD are receiving the same treatment
The Creation of FEMA started out as a beautiful theory. Before FEMA we had an Acts constructed to make the situation better but FEMA was constructed to assistance the situations first hand so that the American people were catered to at a quicker response and in a manner that was assessed for safety situations. “On April 1, 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed the executive order that created the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). From day one, FEMA has remained committed to protecting and serving the American people. That commitment to the people we serve and the belief in our survivor centric mission will never change.” This is stated on fema.gov; this shows that FEMA was designed to be the leaders in effect for disasters that
According to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), there are many factors that will affect the direction of emergency management in the coming years. These can be classified as global challenges, global opportunities, national challenges, national opportunities, professional challenges, and professional opportunities. Global Challenges include some issues like global climate change, increasing population and population density, increasing resource scarcities, rising income inequality, and increasing risk aversion. Global Opportunities has to do with increased scientific understanding of the hazards and societal responses, as well as revolutionary technologies. National Challenges involves increasing urbanization and hazard exposure, interdependencies in infrastructure, continued emphasis on growth, rising costs of disaster recovery, increasing population diversity, terrorist threats, low priority of emergency management, legal liability, and intergovernmental tensions. Due to these factors that will affect the direction of emergency management in the coming years, there is need for us at emergency management division to adjust operational plans to meet these challenges and especially changes emanating from constant changes expected in technology and other threats we face.
through filthy, contaminated water with no help. Yet, how to get to those who needed assistance was going to be a challenge within itself. There was going to have to be a plan for transportation.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is a body under the United States Department of Homeland Security that was created in 1978 to improve the safety of the American residents, especially during disasters. FEMA has a primary mandate of coordinating the response to any disaster that may occur in the U.S. and that overwhelms both local and state authorities’ resources. FEMA comes in to aid only after the governor of the involved state has declared a state of emergency and has made a formal request. However, there is an exception to the gubernatorial declaration requirement, when an emergency occurs on a federal property such as the Space Shuttle Columbia experienced in the 2003 return-flight disaster ("About the FEMA Agency", 2016).
Living in Florida there are many things to be worried about from alligators, hot heat, and the most important hurricanes. The first hurricane I experienced was in the first two months of me living in Florida. I moved here from New York and I had no idea what to expect when I heard that a hurricane was coming. It was like nothing I had experienced before, seeing a tree pulled from the ground by only water and wind was a devastating experience that I was something I did not expect to see. After the hurricane, my dad went to the store and bought as much; canned food, water bottles, candles, flashlights and batteries he could find to make sure that just in case another hurricane hit we would be prepared. After the hurricane, I started to wonder about better ways on how to prepare for another hurricane. Especially, living in Florida there are
Throughout its history, FEMA has had two main missions. First, FEMA’s mission is to enhance the federal government 's capacity to deal with and survive foreign attacks. The main types of foreign attacks that FEMA is tasked to respond to relate to terrorist attacks and nuclear war. The second mission of FEMA is to assist state and local authori¬ties to respond to man-made and natural disasters that are to enormous for the local and state resources to respond to efficiently. While national security focuses more on civil defense, state and local authorities are more focused on natural disasters such as hurricanes, storms, floods and potential nuclear power accidents. These divergent focuses really presents FEMA with huge challenges since federal security authorities’ main objective is quite different from state or local authorities’ focus. Considering that FEMA designed the Federal Response Plan, the agency has the challenge of balancing these interests while working on its two key missions.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, is responsible for coordinating the government’s role in preparation, prevention, response and recovery from domestic disaster, whether they be natural or man-made. FEMA.gov lists 1849 total disasters declared since 1953, with an average of 32 each year (13). This particular agency has generated a lot of praise and but just as much criticism. Over the course of FEMA’s history, there are many lessons to be learned and FEMA is always looking for ways to be more effective. This paper will examine the history of FEMA, evaluate its performance over the years and pinpoint lessons to be learned and actions to be taken.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) partners with Homeland Security to aid Americans and people in other countries in case a major disaster occurs. They give out food and water and help provide shelters to those who have lost their homes. But it has only been in recent years after terrorist attacks on U.S. soil that Homeland Security has joined this group. This has increased suspicions towards why a group that was created to fight terrorists would need to be involved in aiding those who have been in an earthquake or flooding. Few Americans feel that they have any hope of being able to truly count on their assistance because of this. But that isn't the only reason. FEMA has been hiding several truths from Americans who falsely believe
