The United States for years has been a country full of opportunities. As of the freedoms, the United States is a country full of many different types of people with their own cultures and different views of life. A reason for this is that, the United States is promoted as an interwoven country. The United States is the land of opportunities, but it can also be abundant in diversity and exclude others because of their culture or just the fact that people are not the same skin color. The color of one’s skin can also predict what opportunities people have in life. The United States may have a pluralistic society, but it can also be the greatest diverse country. While present television promotes cultural diversity as an impacting and influential means of communication, it didn’t always used to be this way. During the late 1940’s the United States was full of negative outlooks toward the underclass society that at the time was occupied by people of African American descent. These facts clearly show the growing importance of Hispanics, who are becoming an increasingly crucial part of the United States; the labeled ‘minority group’ is extremely incorrect if we consider the growth percentage during the last decade, and the future data is not likely to sustain this label anymore.

The deeper meaning of citizenship as I read it in Chapter 1 is that citizenship means belonging to and participating in the community that one lives in. The belonging to is the easy part, it requires nothing but physical presence, the act of participating requires work. In order to be a full citizen requires one to become aware of and educated on the issues of the day. After a person has educated themselves, in some other manner than TV, the work gets hard. Voting is just one step in the process of good citizenship. Members of congress and the POTUS are contacted on a daily basis from corporations and large groups about their wants and needs. Conflicts within and across countries have a tremendous effect on not only the people who live in these places, but the relationship among other countries as well. Immigration places a huge role in the diversity of a countries society. Sean Allin Professor Jefferson CULF 1320 3/31/16 Citizenship is a large debate today. Even presidents in the upcoming debate key on citizenship. But today is not the only time in our history that citizenship has been talked about. Whether it be to acknowledge African Americans as citizens or only 3/5ths of a person, citizenship has been a debatable point for many years. The debate of citizenship doesn’t just stop at race. Women, to an extent, have not always been treated as citizens as well. The understanding of the history of citizenship starts with slavery. African Americans have a lengthy history as their fight for freedom from slavery was not an over night process. Until 1787, blacks weren’t even counted as people. Not only were they not citizens, but they weren’t counted as people when determining populations of southern states. At the 1787 constitutional convention the southern states pushed for blacks to be counted as people for income tax purposes and more importantly for the number of seats they would have on the house of representatives. With more power from house seats would come more power to the southern states. When given 3/5th of a tally on the census, African Americans were now closer to being citizens even though none had the right to vote. The next advancement that came for the road to citizenship for African Americans was the abolition of slavery. The civil war ran from 1861 to 1865 when the north eventually defeated the south. Global citizenship comes with certain rights and responsibilities that govern being a citizen of a nation and the global entity as a whole. Globalization and the advanced technology have enabled increased connections and integration across the world. As global citizens, the choices and actions that persons undertake have consequences that may impact people and societies on the local level, nationally and internationally.

Citizenship tends to give an individual a membership in a national community. In terms of liberal democracies, it makes them have the right to; take part freely in public activities, run for an office, and the right to vote; on the other hand the individual has the obligation of paying tax. Based on the larger international community, citizenship forms a powerful media of social closure in two ways: the boundary of citizenship paves way for rich states to draw a line separating its citizens from potential immigrants who are from poor countries. In another way, it provide a base that states use to create internal boundaries that is separating citizens from foreign residents, in terms of associating some given rights and privileges with national citizenship.
