The Responsibility of Discipline “We need to understand the difference between discipline and punishment. Punishment is what you do to someone; discipline is what you do for someone.” ~Zig Ziglar In the book Starship Troopers, the story begins with a young boy, who joins the armed forces. He is placed in the MI, mobile infantry, and sent off to boot camp. His training begins at Camp Currie with over two hundred others. At Camp Currie their Sergeant and leader in discipline was to be Sergeant Zim. It was Sergeant Zim who oversaw training and who would rebuke the recruits. Captain Frankle was Sergeant Zim’s head in command. When Sergeant Zim encountered a problem, which rarely occurred, would report to Captain Frankle, who would manage the situation and apply appropriate punishment. In one particular case a trainee, Ted Hendrick, punched Sergeant Zim and had to suffer a sentence of ten lashes and bad conduct discharge after a court marshalling. After the court marshalling the new recruit, Johnnie, overheard Sergeant Zim request Captain Frankle for a transfer. Captain Frankle proceeded to reprimand Sergeant Zim for allowing Ted Hendrick to hit a Sergeant and refused Sergeant Zim transfer. Sergeant Zim wanted the transfer because he felt he was responsible for Ted hitting him. The captain agreed. Over the next weeks Captain Frankle helped instruct the recruits. By this time most of the recruits had left either because of medical discharge, resignation, or
Starship Troopers may be a satire of a fascist state or an apology for fascist ideology or neither (I don’t pretend to know which). In any case, it is a depiction of a possible state of affairs that could theoretically arise out of a futuristic fascist regime. The ideology advocated by this state, and for the most part by its subjects, is one that treats
One idea, I agree with, from Chapter Three discussed how punishment hinders ethical development. Before students act out or do something bad, they think about what consequences they might face for such actions. This “suggests a disturbingly primitive level of moral development, yet it is our use of punishment that causes kids to get stuck there” (p. 29). I could not agree more with this sentence. I remember as a child thinking about doing something bad and the consequences that might result. I remember how I typically would do the “bad” thing because either I would not get caught or I could take the consequences. However, the book suggests getting children to think about the consequences of their misbehaviors is not effective and does not instill better values or awareness of others’ needs. Because of this, we as educators must
1. Welcome to the military, African-Americans, where there is no shortage of segregation. Walter Morris is named the first Sergeant, in charge of the service company of TPS (Stone & Bryan, 2013). Paratroopers have only been training three years prior at Fort Benning, Georgia (Stone & Bryan, 2013). Service Company, all blacks, were in charge of guard and common assistance, like sweeping, mopping, dusting, etc, their hours were 4pm-8am (Stone & Bryan, 2013). Morris thought they were never treated right, spirit, and moral is down because of this.
Entitlement. It seems that every American youth believes that they are entitled to call themselves an American. They believe just since they were born in America they hold the right to call themselves Americans. I believe however, that the right of citizenship must be earned. I believe such is true after watching, the movie “Starship Troopers.” In this sci fi movie people are given the choice to become a citizen by serving two years in the Federal Service. This does not imply military occupations, but instead offers a wide variety of different jobs. Civilians (non-citizens) must serve a two year minimum service to their country to receive the right to vote, but once they have finished the service they receive pretty nice benefits. In modern America I believe this can be accomplished with a minimum of 1 year of national mandatory service.
Punishment is used as a way to protect the values and used as a deterrent to create the right values in society.
Some people don’t think that discipline is an issue. For example, Nick said that the discipline system is “effective.” However, others like Mason and Jacob, thought that it was a serious issue in our school. When asked, Jacob said “I don’t think it is teaching the kids that there are consequences

Discipline is basically calm and controlled behaviour. It is when rules and boundaries are put in place and if those rules are broken then punishments are given to correct disobedience and to enforce discipline. By being disciplined it should also improve someone’s morale. It is about changing behaviour.
For an example, Lieutenant McDonough had to learn how to deal with enlisted men for the first time. His soldiers were used to a distant, unpresent platoon leader who left all the leadership to the non-commissioned officer, so when he arrived, they treated him like a the clueless officer that they had before him. McDonough had to earn trust with his men and show them that he was willing to go out on patrols with them and reprimand them if they were being insubordinate. He struggled with this balance of trust and authority especially with the new soldiers he was sent after losing some of his originals in battle. He knew he had to utilize his NCO platoon sergeant, Hernandez, but Hernandez felt usurped because, when the previous platoon leader was in charge, he had most of the command of the soldiers in battle, and Lieutenant McDonough seemed to have taken some of that from him. McDonough, although having done his job, had to make repairs to that relationship with his
When we were younger we were always told by our parents to behave and follow the rules in school and to be nice to the other children. At school they had a set of rules that we were meant to follow and abide by them. Here in the Marine Corps is no different there are many rules and regulations that are meant to be followed under the UCMJ Articles. It’s important to keep following the orders you are given and that you follow these rules exactly like you are ordered to do so. In this essay I will be talking about the following: Disobeying an Order, Disrespect, Discipline, Chain of Command, Unauthorized Absence, and Leadership Principles and Leadership Traits. I will try my best’s efforts to explain everything and show what I have learned in
Discipline is the most useful quality. It means to act in an orderly manner, to act strictly according to principle. Discipline involves the ability to obey and follow simple task, orders, or request. Discipline is something you acquire through years of being taught, from young to old discipline should be a huge factor of your life. It should be something you live by and use often. Discipline leads to success in everything you do from school, or sports as a child or teenager to your career as an adult. If you use discipline in school or athletics you’ll be a better student, getting good grades. If you use discipline in athletics you gain success in being a recognized athlete which can lead to
Discipline is very important in our daily life. We have to follow lots of rule every single day. Once we don't keep in a right
Seeing one soldier being treated differently, weather this treatment be positive or negative, sets this soldier apart from the rest. This difference in treatment further undermines that unit’s esprit de corps and cohesion. And if this happens that unit’s loyalty can begin to be tested not only amongst them, but can also undermine that unit’s leader who has to spend so much of his and her time dealing with that unit’s only trouble spot.
An adult who practices punishment, controls a child externally. This communicates to a child that they are not able to control themselves, thus have no responsibility for their actions. Also, it can create in the child’s mind, the idea that they can commit a behavior so long as they do not get caught or are willing to accept the consequences. Behavior that is modified with punishment does not evolve from the understanding of what is expected in a society, but rather from fear. Since no understanding was obtained this will not
Misbehavior is an opportunity to show the student that the teacher believes they are capable of a higher standard. The objective of discipline is not to punish but rather to teach the student to act differently in the future by imposing an unwanted consequence based on unacceptable behavior. Punishment alone without the goal of retraining student behavior may cause resentment and further problems down the road. (Charles, 2008)
